It also attempts to undo some of the bias of the past and holds a warning to society in general to respect the culture and beliefs of others in society in general to respect the culture and beliefs of others in society.

Die tradisionele begrip van die amper-vergete melkstoeltjie leef dus deur beeldspraak in die 21ste eeu voort.\u0000Context and cultural-historical meaning of the milking stool, as depicted in children's literature and political cartoons\u0000The humble milking stool is usually associated only with dairy production. This article investigates a broader context and socio-historical meaning portrayed in selected illustrations in English and Afrikaans children's literature - especially picture books and volumes of rhyme - and depictions in South African political cartoons. In children's books, where three- and four-legged milking stools appear as either purposeful or accidental theatrical properties, they represent a meagre and noble rural, even agrarian, existence. For their size, they often contribute to the setting of an intimate scale. At least until late in the twentieth century, they are employed as credible and recognisable objects of a scale and simplicity that is easily accessible to the young viewer and reader.\u0000Three-legged milking stools especially serve as symbols of a vulnerable stability in South African political cartoons, where the structural stability and co-dependence of three legs are often portrayed metaphorically. This metaphor is also widely used in contemporary English, Dutch and Flemish scholarly texts. Through this figure of speech, the traditional notion of the almost forgotten milking stool survives into the twenty first century.

Onder meer word op die Afrikaanse letterkunde, letterkundige en kulturele tydskrifte, die Kultuurverdrag, Afrikaanse liedere en sang en Afrikaanse voordrag en toneel gefokus.\u0000Language and cultural interaction between Flanders and South Africa during the apartheid era : An analysis\u0000During the apartheid era there was a lively cultural interaction between Flanders, the northern Dutch-speaking regional state of Belgium, and South Africa. The kinship between the Afrikaners and the Flemish people played a central role in this period. Mutual language and cultural ties were of primary importance. Because of their own language struggle against French domination, Flanders had a better understanding of the striving of the Afrikaner to maintain his own identity. Traditionally the people in Flanders have thus been more sympathetic towards the Afrikaans language and the Afrikaner. In this article a few aspects of the language and cultural interaction will be analysed. It will inter alia focus on the Afrikaans literature, literary and cultural journals, the Cultural Accord, Afrikaans song and Afrikaans elocution and theatre.

Mnr J.B.Z. Keet (1920-1963)\u0000The Christelike Sangvereniging ASAF, or the ASAF-koor, as this movement was generally referred to, was founded in Melville, Johannesburg, on 5 July 1920. Afrikaners wanted to promote their language and arts in general, but especially choir singing. This contributed to the founding of the Federasie vir Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge (1929-), the Johannesburg Art Society, the Johannesburg Afrikaanse Skrywerskring and a more powerful Afrikaans press in Johannesburg. Mr J.B.Z. Keet conducted the choir for almost 42 years and he was convinced that choir singing could benefit choristers and listeners alike. The choir performed regularly at eisteddfods, church services and Afrikaans cultural and folk festivals. From 1934 the choir also cooperated with the SABC, often with accompaniment by the SABC symphony orchestra. Compositions such as Elijah by Mendelssohn, the Requiems of Mozart and Verdi, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Bach's St Matthew Passion and Handel's Messiah formed part of their repertoire. Keet also encouraged choir singing in other regions of the Witwatersrand. Danie van den Heever succeeded Keet as conductor of the ASAF choir in 1963.

Yet, although the flower sellers are part of Cape Town’s living history, a beacon for tourists, and literally contributes to the Mother City’s vibrant and colourful life, they represent a dying breed. Where do they come from, and more importantly, what is their future?
