Abstract

Since the pre-election campaigns of the 1990s, generalizations, assumptions and myths on African access to land and ownership of land are important issues in the South African political arena. However, access to and ownership of land are not resent issues, but date back to the late 19th and early 20th century. The Natives Land Act (Act No. 27 of 1913) not only paved the way for the rise in Black South African nationalism, but also stressed the fact that land has a political meaning that appears out of proportion to the role of land in the South African economy.
