An interesting case of adaptation is the adaptation of al-Fil al-Azraq's novel to a film showing the effort of an adapter to preserve the novel story as well as transforming it into a new work with a variety of creativity in it. This study aims to reveal the individuality, effects, and meaning of the text contained in the novel al-Fīl al-Azraq as the background text and the film al-Fīl al-Azraq as a foreground work as well as the media changes occurring in the adaptation work . To see this process of adaptation, the theory of aesthetic response from Wolfgeng Iser. The results of this study indicate that the adapters do dialectic with the source text and then display it in their adaptation work through changes in the text in the form of allusions, negations, and blank filling. These changes also affect the individuality, effects, and meaning of the adaptation work to the point of shifting from the source text. This study employed descriptive design. There were two instruments used to collect data. The first instrument was a test. It consisted of 10 items with two different types of questions. The second instrument was an open-ended questionnaire consisting of two questions. The participants were 25 social science students of a private university in Yogyakarta. The data included in this study were 10 students’ works which were randomly selected. The result shows that the students' problems in S-V agreement came from their misunderstanding on: future continuous tense, singular-plural subject, appositive, the use of present participle as adjective, the use of simple present tense, the use of either … or … to show one subject, the presence of double subjects, and the use of both to show double subjects. To encounter these problems, the teacher is suggested to teach the students about the essential elements of a sentence first rather than teaching other aspects. The essential elements are subject and predicate. In short, the students must understand well that a sentence, at least, must consist of one subject and one predicate (verb). The approach employed in this research is the three-dimensional CDA developed by Norman Fairclough. The purposes of this research are to describe the micro, mezzo, and macro as well as the social, political and cultural situation from the linguistic aspects in Gerakan #2019GantiPresiden di Antara Ambiguitas Hukum dan Syahwat Politik text. The results show that there are linguistic aspects in the form of diction in the direct sentences that are used by Kompas.com with the theme #2019GantiPresiden. This movement is considered as a constitutional movement indicated as a rebellion because it is supported by political interests towards their current government rival. This is closely related to the background of Kompas.com as a pro-government online mass media. It is also acceptable if Kompas.com creates a positive image of the current government. (Part 1 and 2) in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This was a descriptive qualitative research and focusing on a single case as well as holistic research involving documents, i.e: the original and the translation books as the objective data and informants who gave assesment on the quality of the translation. The techniques of collecting data were document analysis, questionnaire distribution, and focus grup discussion. Total sampling was applied in this research. The research findings show that there were 12 types of translation techniques applied by the translator, namely established equivalent, borrowing, variation, modulation, explication, discursive creation, literal translation, reduction, transposition, addition, adaptation, and implication. The impact of the application of those techniques toward the translation quality was good enough. The scores indicate that the translation has good quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This study discusses the classification and the meanings of address terms in pesantren as well as pesantren and Javanese cultural perspectives on the terms. This descriptive-qualitative research applies emic approach. The result shows that there are 15 address terms in pesantren, namely kiai, nyai, gus, mas, ning, bapak, ibu, mbak, kang, cak, ustadz, ustadzah, abah, abi, and umi. These distinctive address terms aim to honor the kiai, teachers, kiai’s and teachers’families, and santri. Pesantren’s view posits that respecting teachers, teachers’ family, and fellow santri is a pace to get barokah and manfaat (benefit) of science, the santri’s ultimate goal and their destination of seeking knowledge. Meanwhile, Javanese cultural persepective argues that this respect indicates syncretism between Javanese and Islamic culture. The respect to kiai is influenced by the respect to begawan. On the other hand, santri’s attitude refers to cantrik. Different tributes between teacher and kiai are influenced by Javanese culture. It indicates the existence of different obligations and rights in pesantren which impact on the stratification at pesantren. This research objectives were to investigate the conflicts and defense mechanisms in Audrey Turner, the main character of Finding Audrey novel written by Sophie Kinsella. This research was conducted in qualitative method by using narrative research design. The collected data were identified, categorized, and analyzed based on literature and psychology perspectives of Islam’s (2016) theory and defense mechanisms by Cramer (2006). The findings show that person vs him/herself as the internal conflict is found 52 times (67.5%). The first external conflict found is person vs person which appears 23 times (29.9%) It is followed by person vs society and person vs nature conflicts, each of which appears once only (1.3%). Three kinds of defense mechanisms are found as well. The denial defense mechanisms are found 72 times (54.1%) whereas projection and identification are each found as many as 48 times (36.1%) and 13 times (9.8%). It means that Audrey, as the main character, mostly faces conflicts against her own self and feels of fears affected from her anxiety disorder and people around her.
