This greater engagement with technology has led to exploration of what we can use it for to make a better world not only for tomorrow but for the here and now. In this issue we have several articles focusing on digital transformation, use of data and new technology and so I thought it would be interesting to take a brief look at data, how we are using it, developing using it and when perhaps we can realise real benefit from the analysis of large data sets for the future of our environment. Data is described by the Cambridge English Dictionary as ‘information, especially facts or numbers, collected to be examined and considered and used to help with making decisions’. There are many challenges in gaining real benefits from data analysis from traversing privacy laws to licensing and combining the right sets of data to careful interpretation of results in the correct context. Time and again when I speak to information professionals, I hear about the battle to understand and interpret internal data before even considering the complexities of what external data is available and how to license it for specific use to gain benefit for their organisation. This was further backed up as a key theme that came through in our survey this year. On further reading it is also a key theme in McKinsey Insights with several articles dedicated to getting more strategic with the information an organisation holds to operate more effectively. What are we doing to make the most of data? The pandemic has seen an unprecedented collaborative effort to use data to find solutions to the public health crisis, controlling the spread and developing vaccines to ultimately manage if not eradicate the virus. In an interview between McKinsey’s Hemant Ahlawat and Mitch Cuddihy, Dame Sally Davies, England’s former Chief Medical Officer, discusses the challenges and achievements utilising data sets brought those working to combat the pandemic (https://www.mckin sey.com/industries/public-and-social-sector/our-insights/ preventing-global-health-crises-an-interview-with-damesally-davies?cid1⁄4other-eml-dre-mip-mck&hlkid1⁄46227 aae6cbfb4a4588a137268c185724&hctky1⁄412489918& hdpid1⁄45ef2c874-47fa-4ec4-b3aa-844f2295218e). In this article Dame Sally talks about how the pandemic has made them see the need to use data differently in order to get the right insights to the right people at the right time. She reflects on the difficulties of effectively combining different types of siloed data to track disease transmission quoting a successful example of how the Spanish statistics office worked with national telecom companies and within strict data privacy laws to help decision makers see how the population was sticking to lockdown measures. She goes on to talk about the Trinity Challenge and how this is focussed on working out how","PeriodicalId":39735,"journal":{"name":"Business Information Review","volume":"38 1","pages":"58 - 59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/02663821211021728","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49648432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The term reflected a focus on the digitisation of existing processes. Such comparisons continued with the arrival of the Internet and worldwide web in the mid-1990s, with visions of e-commerce replacing traditional bricks-and-mortar shops. In the first two decades of the 21st century, we have entered an era where much of the data created is now digital by design and default yet simultaneously integrated with physical objects and real-world interactions. This article explores some of the innovations made possible by this new physicality of data, from the birth of a digital twin to the death of privacy, and the growing urgency for new approaches to data governance and information lifecycle management.","PeriodicalId":39735,"journal":{"name":"Business Information Review","volume":"38 1","pages":"67 - 74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/02663821211020194","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46174052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, and what I expect to be a recurring theme in forthcoming research articles, I look at articles that investigate or compare different business and management factors to the responses to the recent Covid pandemic. Such a global health crisis with its impact on societies, politics, cultures, and individuals will be studied and dissected for years to come. Generally, I try not to delve into too much detail on these articles, but I do try to highlight elements that either interest me or that connect to the use of business information, or how the articles connects to business librarians and information professionals. My hope is that these broad-stroke summaries will spark an interest in going to read the actual articles. In the first article from the Business and Professional Communication Quarterly by Lentz et al. (2020), the authors investigate different factors that impact business and professional communication instructors focusing on teaching, job satisfaction, salary, rank, promotion, administrative support, student concerns and several others. The research was to identify specific, common areas of need; areas of diverse needs; gather data for improving the academic environment; articulate steps for advocating for healthy teaching environments; and to learn what ABC (Association for Business Communication), the professional organization, can do to advocate for those who teach business and professional communication. A survey was sent to members of ABC to gather input on these issues. The results reported on the students’ issues, general support, workplace factors, and resources. Key factors included concern about students’ mental wellbeing, and their general lack of preparedness for such a course. Support comes predominantly from colleagues and department heads, less so from deans. The amount of grading, number of classes and size of classes are all issues of concern from the respondents. The consensus was that instructors had enough resources to do their job. The study identified some of the demographic characteristics of the respondents, their perceived areas of strength and need, and ways ABC could support those strengths and needs. I found many elements of this research relatable to the librarian profession. There were definite commonalities with their perceptions of support and student preparedness. Also, the overall importance and relevance of the work they do; with the provision of teaching a necessary set of skills that is applicable in many situations is very similar to business librarians teaching business research skills. The differing levels of support are another similar factor that we share as we deal with a variety of constitue","PeriodicalId":39735,"journal":{"name":"Business Information Review","volume":"38 1","pages":"75 - 78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/02663821211018288","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48033959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Published continually since 1991, the BIR Annual Survey has provided an invaluable insight into changing demands, trends, and resource requirements in the business information sector for over 30 years. This year, Stephen Phillips has taken over preparing the survey, following in the footsteps of Denise Carter, Allan Foster, Pam Foster, and Gerry Smith. And in a change to tradition, we will be publishing the results of the survey not in one single report, but over several issues through the year. We’re very grateful to everyone who has contributed to the survey this year, and over the past 30 years, for sharing their expertise and insights for the benefit of the global business information community. One of the issues that has featured in the BIR Annual Survey from the very first report has been the pressures that arise from globalisation of business, commerce, and regulation. New data-driven firms need to control key resources in order to develop the new data-driven capabilities they need. The present paper analyzes the relationships between process innovation capability, management innovation and big data analytics capability, covering aspects related to a better understanding of how firms can obtain benefit from their investments in big data. PLS-SEM models with data from 195 firms are used. The main results suggest that management innovation and process innovation capabilities have an important role in the development of big data analytics capability. Big data analytics capability is much more than just investing in technology, collecting vast amounts of data, and allowing the technology department to experiment with analytics. The outcomes of this study present evidence on how innovative managers who promote innovations in process as well as innovations in different aspects of the organization favor the development of capabilities in big data analytics.","PeriodicalId":39735,"journal":{"name":"Business Information Review","volume":"38 1","pages":"28 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/0266382120984716","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45180386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And today with search algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) such an ever-present part of daily life and media consumption, the challenges in learning how to filter information for oneself for effective processing, interpretation and analysis have only increased. This article presents several frameworks that were created for instructing students to assist with addressing this. They were tested and refined over four years in a core MBA course focused on decision making and project-based work. They include ways to conceptualize the broad areas of information available for business decision making as well as how to identify information by thinking about who is producing it, why they are producing it and who their key customers are. Other frameworks presented deal with ways to identify pertinent information and how to process and work with it as part of a research investigation. These frameworks are presented as tools that can be used by business school instructors, but certainly have a broader application as useful guidelines for anyone hoping to be a better collector and processor of relevant information for decision making and project work.","PeriodicalId":39735,"journal":{"name":"Business Information Review","volume":"38 1","pages":"21 - 27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/0266382120984725","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47156432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the review of literature on knowledge management, this study points out the role of knowledge audit in solving the challenges in organizations’ tacit and explicit knowledge. Specifically, the paper concentrates on knowledge audit, knowledge risk and international and national standards on knowledge audit processes. The contribution of this study to literature are the suggestions that knowledge risk and international standards procedures could be applied to knowledge audit. The important conclusion of this paper is that knowledge risk management has not been fully explored in the study of knowledge audit. The paper addresses the research question of what organizations must embark on in the process of knowledge audit. The paper attempts to provide answer to the question by highlighting the importance of knowledge audit and the reasons why organizations carry out knowledge audit, and also the existing knowledge audit frameworks and methodologies.","PeriodicalId":39735,"journal":{"name":"Business Information Review","volume":"15 1","pages":"89 - 102"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/0266382120986034","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41249365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
