This claim allows society to view generally these leaders as false Christs. To guide individuals in society in identifying their characteristics empirically, in this paper, the language in the discourses of these leaders from the aboutness and communication style perspectives is viewed through the key linguistic features identified. The sermons of Apollo Quiboloy (the leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ) and the sermons of AJ Miller (the leader of Divine Truth) who view themselves as Jesus Christ incarnate were used as the target corpora. The sermons of these leaders were comparedto different versions of the four canonical gospels (namely, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) as the benchmark corpora found in the Christian Bible using keyness analyses to identify the patterns of key linguistic features in the sermons for language characterization. The findings show that the language in the sermons of Apollo Quiboloy displays concepts such as the relationship of father and I (son) which are likely to be similar when compared to the gospels, whereas the language in the sermons of AJ Miller displays psychological concepts which are likely to be different when compared to the gospels. The findings in the sermons of Christ claimants may allow the characteristics of these religious leaders to be identified.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128691278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It analyzesthe character archetypes of the Tau Sug Hero to investigate his disposition as the commanding leader of the Sulu Forces against the colonizers’ imposition, as depicted by the old Tau Sug folks who recall his history. To reveal his characteristics, an archetypal literary criticism is employed in this study, which examines three classified character archetypes: The Ego Types, The Self Types, and The Soul Types. The results indicate that Panglima Sayyadi’s character was an amalgamation of the three motifs, being the Warrior and the Traditionalist of the Ego Type, the Leader and the Thinker of the Self Type, and the Revolutionary and the Visionary of the Soul Type, which implies his courage to defend and loyalty to his belief system. It can also be concluded that these archetypes are innate to his individuality as a Tau Sug. ","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121044544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This species was reported as an intermediate host of many helminth parasites. This research aimed to determine the association of endo-parasites, diet composition, and length and weight in snakehead fish C. striata Bloch in three selected municipalities along Lake Mainit, Caraga Region, Philippines. The results revealed that food items found in the stomach of the fish were mostly composed of shrimps, plant debris, fish, crab, detritus (dry & wet seasons), aquatic insects and snail (wet season). Among the seven food items, highest index of relative importance (IRI) value observed are shrimps in both wet and dry seasons. A nematode parasite was recovered in the gut of the fish samples. Out of 180 fish samples, 133 were infected with Procamallanus sp. The prevalence was higher in the dry season compared to the wet season. However, parasite intensity and diet count of C. striata Bloch. showed no significant variations between sampling sites and seasons.  On the other hand, there were no significant differences between the intensity of the parasite count to the length and weight of the fish; the association between parasite count and diet count during dry and wet seasons showed a strong positive correlation. The results indicated that C. striata Bloch is susceptible to Procamallanus sp. nematode infection because of its carnivorous diet and serves as the vector or intermediate host in freshwater. Thus, more fish samples, the host’s age, host’s sex, the study gap, infection rate of the fish organs, and assessment of the physico-chemical parameters in future studies must be used.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128474740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It utilized a descriptive method and ethnographic process in the study design. The collected folktales mirrored the following components of culture: 1) Social practices, i.e., Rido (family rivalries), use of gong and balao (musical instruments), wedding, use of native baskets, dowry system for courtship, slavery, use of malong (indigenous clothing). 2) Economic practices, like farming, fishing, and barter trading. 3) Political practices, including Datu and Sultanate systems. 4) Religious practices. The analysis shows that the folktales reflect the life and works of the Kagan in Pantukan municipality, Davao de Oro, and Lupon municipality, Davao Oriental, of Mindanao Island of the Philippines. The cultural role of folktales is getting diluted in the Philippines. However, this study found that folktales have a serious purpose of preserving, developing, and sustaining indigenous culture for a better future. In conclusion, the Kagan and their folktales reveal the transcendence of folk beliefs, customs, and traditions to benefit their culture in an acculturated society today.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124472920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This suggests that the SPJRD pays enormous attention to the quality of the papers it accepts for publication. Moreover, the recent inclusion of its issues in the Andrew Gonzales Philippine Citation Index attests to its commitment to publishing research articles on par with the international research community’s standards.In the first article of this issue, Tran Nguyen Phuoc Thong from the Cooperation Center for Lawyer Training on International Trade, Judicial Academy in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, evaluates the influence of cross-ownership in Philippine and Vietnamese laws through agency theory and corporate governance models and makes some recommendations for Philippine and Vietnamese laws.In the second article, Daisy T. Besing and Rhinna M. Saan of the University of Southeastern Philippines zero in on the productivity and financial performance of income-generating projects (IGPs) of a Philippine state university in the Davao Region, Philippines. They end their paper with a proposal for strategic decisions to improve the performance of IGPs of a Philippine state university.The next two articles talk about Philippine literature and culture. Takashi Tsuji of Saga University in Japan explores the Philippine society and culture by analyzing the structure and content of Philippine folktales featuring monkeys found among Ilokano, Kalinga, Tinguian, Tagalog, Bicolano, Ilonggo, Meranaw, Bukidnon, Kapampangan, and Bisaya. Tsuji concludes that, contrary to the cunning and selfishness of the monkeys in folktales, the monkey is symbolic of pursuing the virtues of a culture rooted in reciprocal relationships, which Filipinos value the most.The other article on Philippine literature and culture highlights the unsung hero of Tapul Island, Sulu, Philippines. Nelson S. Dino, Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali, Al-Haniff Lee Matolo of the Mindanao State University in Tawi-tawi and their counterparts from Universiti Malaysia Sabah and USeP, examine the character archetypes of Panglima Sayyadi based on kissa, an oral narrative passed down through generations.The article of Dino and his colleagues does not only reveal the characteristics of Panglima Sayyadi as a leader of the Sulu Forces, but more importantly, serves as an inspiration to the young generations of Tau Sug to protect their hula (homeland), bangsa (nation) and agama (religion) against the colonizers.Ending this issue with applied linguistics and religious studies, the article of Raymund T. Palayon of the Muban Chombueng Rajabhat University and David D. Perrodin of the Mahidol University in Thailand investigates the characteristics of Christ claimants ","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124680638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these tales, mouse deer, called pilanduk, appear as tricksters. This study aims to explore such folktales and investigate why these animals are depicted in this way. The research method involved material studies designed to collect folktales for analysis and collecting, reading, and examining the details of literature about animal folktales, especially folktales about mouse deer in the Philippines. Prior to the library research, fieldwork was conducted on Balabac Island in Palawan Province. Results indicate that mouse deer folktales exist among at least four Muslim and indigenous groups on Mindanao Island, although mouse deer are a species native to Balabac Island of Palawan Province. Five specific mouse deer folktales were examined. In each case, the mouse deer functioned as a trickster, killing others, ridiculing their misfortunes, and plundering marriages. This article examines the characteristics of these folktales and discusses why mouse deer appear in folktales of ethnic groups, mainly on Mindanao Island. Variant mouse deer folktales are also found in Indonesia and Malaysia. It is possible that mouse deer folktales came from Islamic communities in Southeast Asia and that they may show cultural norms among Muslim societies.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134071815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These expressions are often flexible, allowing them to function beyond their literal meaning. Thus, pragmatics is functional in explaining their significance in speakers' utterances, mainly when expressing affirmation and disapproval. This study investigates the pragmatic functions of agreeing and disagreeing formulaic expressions in the Cebuano language, namely o/oo, lagi, bitaw, mao, wala, and dili. The framework of Tanangkingsing (2009) was employed to analyze and describe the functions of agreeing and disagreeing formulaic expressions in the Cebuano language used in a radio conversation. The study revealed that agreeing formulaic expressions are primarily used to convey agreement to the statements of the other participants in the conversation and affirm their own statements. On the other hand, disagreeing formulaic expressions are primarily used to convey contradiction to the perceived wrong information given by the other speakers in a conversation, opposing views or counterarguments to the opinions stated in a conversation, and expressions to serve as negation. Agreeing and disagreeing formulaic expressions in the Cebuano language have various functions depending on the context and the speaker's purpose. ","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124555508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Part of its persistence is the values it carries, which have shaped and helped us make sense of the world around us. By purposively selecting texts with the most read counts in a cyber archive, this paper aims to understand Philippine urban legends from a segment of texts archived and circulated online. Employing the structuralist framework by Leach (1973) and folktale category by Propp (1958), it aims to identify forms, motifs, and functions embedded in each creature discoursed in the urban tales. Results revealed that creatures are confined to the Aswang, White Lady, and Diwata tropes which are mainstream figures in Philippine urban legends. Motifs reinforced a gendered image attached to each monster which consequently led to men as victims and viewed as objects of hostilities, wherein the employment of palette was effective in evoking the intended effect in an urban horror tale. Consequently, these motifs justify the function they play, wherein each is discursive towards social and justice issues, including ecocritical concerns. It can be concluded that the internet as an archiving space is not an enemy of folklore but a critical factor in its diffusion and central propagator of our collective consciousness as Filipinos. Furthermore, it is recommended that expanding the scope of creatures and the amount of corpus to be included in the analysis will provide an array of findings that will reflect more of our rich folklore and literary traditions.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133898969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
