Due to the nature of this business, many of the electrical loads are in offshore remote locations. As a result, supplying power to such offshore locations is not an easy task. This paper compares the feasibility and economics of the HVAC and HVDC power transmission alternatives. A case study is presented about satisfying the offshore electrical loads of Site A through submarine cables. The complex operation of commissioning such a sophisticated power supply infrastructure is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":395633,"journal":{"name":"2014 Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG)","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117105515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a communication-aided distance protection and fault location algorithm for EHV series-compensated transmission lines based on Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) and Synchrophasor Measurement techniques. The proposed algorithm utilizes the PMU to develop a distance protection and fault location scheme using synchronized voltage and current measurements from both local and remote end substations. The synchronized voltage and current measurements from local end are transmitted to remote end and vice-versa. Then, the determination of the fault zone and fault location is performed in both local and remote end distance relays without exchanging of any other signals (permissive, blocking, direct transfer tripping... etc.). In the proposed algorithm, both voltage and current signals will be communicated via PMU. This will offer great advantages of reducing the required digital communication channels and ability for reducing communication time delay errors. Moreover, in case of losing of the voltage transformer signal in the remote end substation, or if there is no voltage transformer, as in some old existing substations, the scheme is capable of calculating the missing voltage signal and maintaining a higher system reliability.","PeriodicalId":395633,"journal":{"name":"2014 Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG)","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122986656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Now, with the introduction of embedded renewable generation and with the wide spread of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), Transmission System Operators (TSO) are facing additional challenges during reconstruction due to uncontrolled generation, decrease of substation autonomy and increase of needed coordination with other actors (DSO, generation,...). In order to face these challenges, several strategies need to be developed by TSOs to speed up and increase the robustness of the system reconstruction: choice of frequency and voltage of reconstruction, determination of number of generating units regulating a network island and clearing or not of DSO substations prior to energization are strategies considered in this paper. In addition, different stages of system reconstruction are defined based on the capability of the reconstructed system to withstand unexpected events and faster reconstruction actions. This analysis leads to the elaboration of strategies and guiding criteria for the optimal design of a grid restoration process.","PeriodicalId":395633,"journal":{"name":"2014 Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114662475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IEC 61850 standards suite is the most promising collection of standards for the design of substation communication and automation systems and has become accepted by utilities. Up to now there were no metering devices for billing according to IEC 61850 available on the market. Sampled values according to IEC 61850-9-2 can be used as input for high precisions metering. The meter as “cash-generator” in substations stores and transfers the billing values to the data acquisition system to support the billing process. The established standards for meters and data acquisition are DLMS/COSM. Further, DLMS/COSEM and IEC 61850 are based on similar structures with object models. To prove the suitability of this new metering solution based on sampled values installations are placed in substations in parallel to conventional metering solutions. Leading substation suppliers presented at CIGRE 2012 a new generation of substations with sampled values for voltage and current instead of conventional instrument transformers. Since 2012 several substations using sampled values as input for all devices were introduced worldwide. The results from thus installations are very encouraging.","PeriodicalId":395633,"journal":{"name":"2014 Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134060664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This scheme is based on a numerical relay which is composed of rms current converter, integrator, comparator, low-pass filter and reset logic. The model of the system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. The performance of the relay is investigated at normal conditions, even during motor starting of the irrigation load as well as at faulty conditions. The relay succeeds to discriminate between the fault current and the starting current of the motor and operates only under faulty conditions.","PeriodicalId":395633,"journal":{"name":"2014 Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128078165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The house is equipped with distributed generation sources, like microCHP and solar panels. The house is also equipped with heat and electricity buffers to store the generated energy. Another technology which is introduced to the house is the Power Router machine. Based on the islanded house model, different configurations have been developed to simulate different scenarios. The simulation is done for different electricity and heat demand profiles. We used four different demand profiles which represents four seasons. We studied the effect of buffer sizes on the amount of the imported and exported electricity. Further simulations and analysis were carried out for configurations and scenarios that include a grid connected house model to analyse the differences between an islanded house and a grid connected house. The same demand profiles have been used in the grid connected simulation. In these scenarios it was possible to export and import electricity from grid.","PeriodicalId":395633,"journal":{"name":"2014 Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130169137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Areas with large solar energy potential are among the dustiest in the world. At first glance, solar would be a natural fit in many of these environments but humidity, airborne dust, and wind of these regions often bring high soiling rates that can accumulate to reduce performance by up to 10% per month on average, where soiling can be a major loss factor that affects the energy yield for PV plants especially in humid and dusty climates. Therefore, to achieve the desired performance ratio and obtain stable generation, mitigation solutions are proposed to overcome dust issues that affect the performance of PV plants. This makes PV module cleaning a key component for long-term plant performance and sustainable profitability. In this paper, a review of the mechanisms and mitigation solutions to overcome soiling on solar installations using real-world testing and verification is investigated with emphasis on dry type cleaning methods.","PeriodicalId":395633,"journal":{"name":"2014 Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference (SASG)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128815870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
