The complexity of supplying electrical power to offshore facilities: A case study

Abstract

With today's oil and gas industry bustling with activity, there is an increased demand for electrical power. Due to the nature of this business, many of the electrical loads are in offshore remote locations. As a result, supplying power to such offshore locations is not an easy task. This paper compares the feasibility and economics of the HVAC and HVDC power transmission alternatives. A case study is presented about satisfying the offshore electrical loads of Site A through submarine cables. The complex operation of commissioning such a sophisticated power supply infrastructure is also discussed.
