In order to demonstrate experimentally the sensing approach, four fibre Bragg gratings were attached to a polymeric board for detecting the disturbance caused by a drop weight impact. An artificial neural network was used to process the sensor responses and to identify the quadrant location of the impact on the structure. At this site, the electromagnetic spectrum is produced by both natural and artificial sources. The intensities of the electric and magnetic fields were measured in two frequency ranges (1 Hz to 1 MHz, and 1 MHz to 9.4 GHz) with hand-held detectors and compact antennas. Measurements were performed in sweep-time mode and changing precision in the resolution bandwidth (RBW). In order to increase the inductance per unit of area more than one metal layer is used and the spiral inductor is oriented in the vertical instead of the horizontal plane. The inductor is designed in 130 nm BiCMOS technology using five metal layers. Simulations were performed via Sonnet 3D EM software. The inductance at low frequencies was verified with the Greenhouse method using Grover formulas. Good agreement between simulations and analytical calculations was found when the inductance length and metal width was changed. As a first proof of concept, an inductor of 340 pH with self-resonance frequency of 51.7 GHz and a quality factor of 3.14 at 26 GHz was designed, which is well suited for peaking purposes. The designed inductor shows an inductance per unit of area of 377 nH/mm2. The heterodyne radar transceiver integrates LO buffering and quadrature splitting circuits, up- and down-conversion SSB mixers and two cascaded receiver LNA's. The chip has been manufactured in a 0.25 μm SiGe:C BiCMOS technology and its size is 1390 × 2690 μm2. The transmitter demonstrates a maximum output power at 24 GHz of approximately -30 dBm with an externally applied LO power of 3 dBm. The receiver demonstrates a peak gain of 13.3 dB at 22.15 GHz with >10 dB return loss. The modelling of wearable antennas in Body Area Networks (BANs) has been separated into antennas in the vicinity of the body (full wave simulations), including body dynamics (taken from motion capture analysis), and the environment (clusters of scatterers). A Geometrically Based Statistical Channel model adapted to the BANs environment is used. Based on proper metrics, optimum 2×2 antenna placements are suggested. The best performance is obtained when the on-body sink is on the front and back of the body, and data sensors are on the head, with a capacity gain of 0.97.
