Comparing Wollstonecraft’s Letters Written in Sweden, Norway and Denmark against Rousseau’s Discourse on the Origin of Inequality and his Reveries of the Solitary Walker, reveals how they understood the ideas of isolation and solitude in irreconcilable ways. Both authors approached solitude and social progress from distinctly personal standpoints, having both experienced crises in their personal lives, which prompted their social critiques of eighteenth-century Europe and England. Rousseau suffered from years of political exile, and the mental struggles of social paranoia, and Wollstonecraft faced and fought against sexism and female dependence. The article examines these two authors to show how one’s reaction to a state of solitude is determined by historical ideas, gender experiences, social experiences, selfishness, social consciousness, and dependence vs. independence. The paper concludes that Rousseau eventually found solace in a fantasy of solitary living, with a bleak outlook for the social progress of mankind, whereas Wollstonecraft more stoically accepted a life amidst a corrupt society in order to fight for the rights of women.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128968623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Trembling in anguish and resentment, I wrote this open letter to our community of Chinese diaspora students in the United States. Writing bilingually in both Chinese and English, I discuss how we diaspora Chinese students in American universities should view and combat racism in the US. This article first debunks the myth of “model minority privilege” attached to Chinese Americans and then channels traditional Confucian thinking to illuminate anti-racist actions and endeavors. Finally, I urge the community to reconnect with our Chinese values and language to approach oppression and equity: to utter the inspiring voices of resistance, to see the powerful act of justice, and to use empathy to connect. This creative opinion piece does not shy away from multilingual writing or non-Western philosophy but rather harnesses the power of two languages and cultures to provoke novel ways in which diasporic communities can tackle racial inequality.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127287769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of these goals, SDG 5, focuses on achieving gender equality by 2030. Despite the commitment made to advance the gender equality agenda, not enough progress has been made to date. The lack of progress is significant across many spheres, such as in corporate America. Gender inequality can be observed in the American private sector through gender pay gaps, the underrepresentation of women in the workplace, and gender bias in recruitment and promotion processes. Although there is vast scholarly literature on how gender imparity can be observed in the America labor market, there is not enough academic literature on how gender inequality can efficiently be eliminated in the US private sector. The following paper examines available tools, strategies, and resources that companies can employ to overcome gender imparity, and offers readers an original framework that American companies can refer to annually to improve their gender performance and advance SDG 5. The paper also outlines the benefits that closing the gender gap in corporate America offers to both, civil society, and private enterprises.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126485763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Institutionally, contemporary inequalities have roots in the continent’s colonial past. This essay supports this view by refuting a counter-argument by Jeffrey Williamson. Comparing Latin American to European and North American developments, Williamson attributes relatively high levels of inequality in Latin America to a missed period of globalisation with levelling effects. My analysis, however, suggests that Williamson misses the “levelling effects” of war and crisis. Rather than missing an equalising period of globalisation, Latin America has missed the destructions of two world wars and the Great Recession. Williamson also overlooks the fact that inequalities have been relatively low in Latin America right after independence, mainly due to capital destruction during civil wars. Yet, extractive colonial institutions have persisted and still help explain Latin American inequalities today. According to Mazzuca’s analysis of “plebiscitarian superpresidentialism,” when commodity prices fall while extractive institutions persist, rent-seeking institutions temporarily generate lower inequalities. Through this lens, recent declines in Latin American inequalities should be seen as a short-lived phenomenon likely to be reversed.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"278 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116555415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Nunavut, wastewater is treated via waste stabilisation ponds because of their relatively low capital and operational costs, and minimal complexity. However, there are inefficiencies in the removal of pathogens relating to the extremely cold temperatures which limit the biological processes of wastewater treatment. As a result, serious public health risks are associated with the human exposure to untreated wastewater. This is particularly true for Indigenous populations that rely on traditional diets for sustenance. Engineering alone will not properly address the issue of wastewater management in Nunavut as Indigenous populations are chronically overlooked in Canadian public policy. Three aspects of Canadian legislation will be discussed in this paper that are imperative for the long-term fight for equality of water and sanitation.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126782847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the household internet access rate in India in 2011 was 10.1% (Roser et al., 2015). Using data from the 2011 Indian Census, this study analyses the impact of computer access, area, literacy, and working rates alongside a gender perspective to explain district-wise household internet access. The analysis demonstrates that access to computers, area, male activity, and literacy significantly explain the internet access rates observed in Indian districts. The study concludes that socio-demographic factors influence the internet uptake and digital divide in India. The conclusion of this paper contributes to theoretical discussions of the digital divide in the modern history of India and provides implications for policy and market expansion in India.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130627526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This piece departs from the assumption that it is important to broaden the scope ofresearch about inequalities and go beyond the most common approaches to the topic, such as studies which focus on the structures that produce and perpetuate inequalities. In the contemporary world there are a variety of types of inequalities based on identities related not only to social class, but also to gender, religion, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and so on. I will argue that, by focusing on the individual, the concept of “stigma”, as introduced by Erving Goffman, alongside the mechanisms of “dehumanization” and “infrahumanization”, as currently studied in the fields of neurosciences and social psychology, may contribute to a better understanding of patterns of reproduction and reinforcement of inequalities in contemporary societies. They are also useful for devising strategies to rehumanize those that live at the margins of society. In fact, it is part of the research agenda of social psychologists and neuroscientists that have been studying processes of dehumanization and infrahumanization to conceive measures that could contribute to abolish (or at least reduce) the proclivity ofcertain perpetrators to dehumanize other human beings. I will finally argue that the branches ofsocial sciences that most commonly study inequalities at a macro level (economics and sociology) or a microlevel (anthropology) would greatly benefit from coming into closer contact with the research on dehumanization and infrahumanization being undertaken in the fields of social psychology and neurosciences, and vice-versa.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125175568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study draws upon qualitative evidence from female employees in London’s financial services sector, alongside corporate narratives to explore the impacts of surveillance on everyday attitudes and behaviours. Through the construction ofa feminist consciousness, the study reveals that the narrow, numerical parameters of traditional monitoring theory and practice are limiting the progression of gender equality. This supports recommendations towards additional qualitative benchmarking criteria to both measure and drive cultural change against current patriarchal norms.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121363679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"‘Just Give Money to the Parents’: A Critical and Comparative Policy Analysis of Childhood Poverty in the United States and the Child Tax Credit","authors":"Trevor O'Connor","doi":"10.56298/kyvpw86gjy","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.56298/kyvpw86gjy","url":null,"abstract":"In January 2022 alone, over 3.7 million American children were pushed into the throes ofpoverty. This striking number marks a 41% increase from December 2021 when the expanded monthly US Child Tax Credit (CTC) expired, leaving many families without the economic life raft to keep them afloat. Such an increase in child poverty has concrete and damaging social, political, economic, and ethical ramifications. Over the past decades, a plethora of studies have established a clear, causal link between the stress, shame, and material deprivation of poverty and the negative consequences on early childhood development and life chances. Economically, childhood poverty costs the US $1.3 trillion annually in lost productivity and social ills, about 5.4% of GDP. This paper seeks to critically examine the causes, consequences, and burgeoning solutions to childhood poverty in the United States through a policy review and accompanying policy memo. The policy review is divided into four constituent parts: 1) an overview of American childhood poverty, 2) a critical analysis of the US’ current approaches, 3) an outline of alternative policy approaches, and 4) an outline of possible policy options for the US. This policy review, utilising the latest empirical evidence and embedded within poverty literature, is followed by a policy memo written to the Chair of the US Senate Budget Committee, urging for the introduction of a permanent monthly, expanded, non-citizenship based, inflation-indexed, and ‘refundable’ Child Tax Credit that will serve as a minimum guaranteed income for America’s families.","PeriodicalId":394700,"journal":{"name":"The Graduate Inequality Review","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114555718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
