Set apart from the host of fictional cities that offer the DC Universe crime-riddled urban backdrops, Detroit is the chosen setting to situate mostly Black superhero characters to speak to and silo off particular social issues that threaten to overly complicate other fictionalized settings. A city as mythologized as American superheroes, Detroit is a crucial site for further exploration in superhero comics because an accurate rendering of its historical and material conditions—particularly by centering Black perspectives on this history—so readily makes the contradictions in the mythos of race, labor, and culture in America visible and legible. Tracing a history for how movements across creator runs are constructed within comics’ superhero genre, the essay contends that creator transitions are sites that disclose implicit assumptions about the nature of comics authorship and the terms of comics creators’ professional identity. Consequently, creator transitions can serve as an index for changing notions of comics’ authorship, which in turn bear not only on comics’ claims to symbolic value, but also on the labor statuses of comics creators. The essay moves back and forth between creative nonfiction and comics studies in a hybrid and fragmented style that embraces both academic and personal connections. I use scenes of creative nonfiction to tell the story of my mother’s death, the way the 1976 Project evolved, and my growing realization that this project was at least partially wrapped up with my grief at my mother’s death. Interposed between these snapshots are theories of nostalgia and grief, as well as theoretical ideas from comics studies. I place the adaptation within a history of American comics documents, including both government comics and Jacobson and Colón’s own influential 9/11 Report adaptation and its successors, as well as within conversations about visual artworks in other genres, such as documentary film, that address torture. The book is also contrasted with several prisoners’ notes, interviews, and drawings. Report comics try to gain more readers for abstruse federal documents, but the graphic Torture Report’s strengths are arguably its breaks in accessibility—the authors’ admissions of not accessing the prisoners’ suffering and of possibly extending it, and their fear, shown in contrived, cross-temporal dialogues between torturers and the Senate text, that the US will disregard the report and continue to torture. {"title":"Drawing Histories, Documenting Experiences: Clément Baloup’s Vietnamese Memories","authors":"Lan Dong","doi":"10.1353/ink.2021.0023","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/ink.2021.0023","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT:This article discusses how Franco-Vietnamese artist Clement Baloup’s Vietnamese Memories Book 1: Leaving Saigon and Vietnamese Memories Book 2: Little Saigon offer a nuanced recollection of and reflection on the colonial history of Vietnam and its long-lasting impact on the Vietnamese diaspora in France and the United States. Different from well-known graphic memoirs of the Vietnamese diaspora, Baloup’s books present multiple and varied accounts rather than focusing on one single narrator and their family. Starting with the story of the artist’s father, the Vietnamese Memories books relate structurally and stylistically different episodes. G. Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano López, and the version written by the same author but with illustrations by Alberto Breccia (1969), radically modify the relationship between aesthetics and politics in comics.
