Patients undergoing hemodialysis are repeatedly exposed to pain from approximately 300 punctures per year. Therefore, pain assessment and management are considered as the nursing priority and one of the important aspects of clinical nursing and one of the therapies to reduce pain is cryotherapy. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy on pain during arteriovenous fistula puncturing among hemodialysis patients in the dialysis unit of Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. Methods: The research approach adopted was experimental research approach using quasi-experimental research design. The independent variable of the study was cryotherapy and the dependent variable was pain during AV fistula puncture. The present study was conducted in the dialysis unit of Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. The sample consisted of patients with CKD receiving hemodialysis through AV fistula on their arm. The selection of the sample was done by non-probability purposive sampling technique followed by random assignment of 60 subjects to experimental and control groups. Three tools were utilized to collect the data. Results: Results revealed that the mean pain score in experimental and control groups were 7.7 and 7.8 respectively, but in experimental group the mean pain score continued to decrease, which shows reduction of pain in experimental group as evident from mean pain scores of 7.7 and 2.5 on 1st and 7th day respectively. The mean pain score in control group does not show any major changes in score, indicating no significant decrease in pain score. Conclusion: It was concluded that cryotherapy was able to reduce the intensity of pain due to AV fistula puncture in hemodialysis patients. It can be used as a non-pharmacological intervention and is a simple and inexpensive therapy.","PeriodicalId":392369,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nursing & Midwifery Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124245492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nurses occasionally encounter thick and tenacious secretions during endotracheal (ET) suctioning. To manage these secretions, normal saline instillation (NSI) is used throughout the world. The use of NSI before endotracheal suctioning is intended to lubricate the catheter, liquefy and soften secretions, and stimulate coughing. The objectives of the study were to assess the effectiveness of endotracheal suctioning with normal saline instillation in terms of physiological parameters and patient outcome among mechanically ventilated patients; to assess the effectiveness of endotracheal suctioning without normal saline instillation in terms of physiological parameters and patient outcome among mechanically ventilated patients; and to compare the effectiveness in terms of physiological parameters and patient outcome in mechanically ventilated patients with and without normal saline instillation. Methods: A quantitative research approach with comparative descriptive design was used for the study. The study was conducted in Max Super specialty Hospital, Saket and New Delhi. Purposive sampling was used for selecting 60 mechanically ventilated patients, from which 30 had undergone ET suctioning with normal saline instillation and 30 had undergone ET suctioning without normal saline instillation. Physiological parameters were assessed by using an observation checklist. Patient outcomes were assessed through observations made at 0–72 hours. Results: The significant findings of the study revealed that mechanically ventilated patients, who had undergone ET suctioning with NSI in comparison to patients who had undergone ET suctioning without NSI, were significant in terms of ventilator tidal volume at 18 hours, p value was 0.005 (p1), similarly systolic blood pressure at 6 hours and 12 hours were 0.001 and 0.049 respectively, significant at 0.05 level of significance. p value of temperature at 12 hours was 0.031, p values of ABG PaO2 at 0 hour, 6 hours,12 hours and 18 hours were 0.036, 0.005, 0.022 and 0.043 respectively, significant at 0.05 level of significance, p values of ABG Na+ at 6 hours and 12 hours were 0.003 and 0.001 respectively, significant at 0.05 level of significance, p values of ABG K+ at 6 hours were 0.046, p values of ABG Ca++ at 0 hour and 12 hours were 0.044 and 0.045 which were significant at 0.05 level respectively; however, the p2 value calculated by ANOVA test from 0–72 hours of patient outcome was not significant at 0.05 level of significance. Conclusion: The findings of the present study conclude that normal saline instillation while ET suctioning was effective in comparison to ET suctioning without normal saline instillation among mechanically ventilated patients in terms of respiratory parameters.","PeriodicalId":392369,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nursing & Midwifery Research","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133561446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adolescence is a time when we are honing our skills for sound mental and social health, and wisdom and a lack of opportunity to engage in this skill-building behavior could impede development. Internet’s importance in the life of an adolescent, as a boon or a bane needs to be analyzed to ensure that not one is lost in this race of growth. Keeping this in mind, a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the impact of internet usage on the psychosocial health and academic performance among adolescents in a selected school of Delhi NCR. A survey was conducted among 200 adolescents, aged between 14 years to 17 years studying in 9 th , 10 th , 11 th and 12 th standards, selected through purposive sampling technique from Delhi Public School, Indirapuram, New Delhi. A structured rating scale to assess the psychosocial health and academic performance was used for data collection and the data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study findings revealed that a substantial number of adolescents had fairly significant impact of internet use on their psychosocial health and academic performance with favorable impact of internet users exceeding the number of adolescents with unfavorable impact of internet use. It was found that the average time of internet usage daily had a significant association with the impact of internet use on psychosocial health. It was also seen that the impact of internet use was more on psychosocial health rather than on academic performance. The results inferred that the internet splurge in the life of adolescents is keeping them at pace with the fast-growing world bringing out a productive generation who is well exposed and wise to face the challenges. Risks and dangers are not been overlooked but rather internet use in moderation is the need of the hour.","PeriodicalId":392369,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nursing & Midwifery Research","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133826339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assaults by psychiatric patients against mental healthcare providers are both a reality and a concern as the effects of violence can be devastating to the victim. These victims suffer from many of the same physical and psychological sequels as victims of a natural disaster or street crime. The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of patient-inflicted violence and knowledge of staff nurses regarding management of violent behavior in psychiatric wards. A quantitative approach with a descriptive survey and cross sectional design was used in the study. 60 staff nurses working in psychiatric wards of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Manipur, was the sample selected. A structured tool and a structured knowledge questionnaire were used to assess the occurrence of patient-inflicted violence and the knowledge of the staff nurses regarding management of violent behavior in psychiatric wards. The data gathered was analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result of the study was that majority of the staff nurses had experienced more of verbal abuse than physical abuse from the psychiatric patients and also had an average knowledge about the management of violent behaviors in psychiatric wards. An information booklet on prevention and management of violent behavior was prepared and disseminated to the staff nurses working in psychiatric wards. Workplace violence (WPV) against healthcare workers (HCWs) employed in psychiatric inpatient wards is a serious occupational issue that involves both staff and patients; the consequences of WPV may include increased service costs and lower standards of care.","PeriodicalId":392369,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Nursing & Midwifery Research","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125349542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
