This method is easily performed and does not require complex mathematic computations. The average time required for processing a 30-minute long of ECG data is less than 1 minute, and the required maximum memory is only about 10 MB. The ECG records available in the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database are utilized to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experiment results show the total classification accuracy was approximately 90.85%.","PeriodicalId":391184,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125519141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, we propose a diffusion-reaction model of the sliding phase of a total search process, and study the effect of varying reaction rate on the detailed search kinetics. With increasing dissociation rate, only the \"fastest\" proteins survive to explore downstream sequences, but at the price of increasing rarity, allowing for fluctuations to dominate the behavior at late times and long distances. Predictions of this model for the total search time agree with experimental estimates across an order of magnitude, providing bounds on dissociation rates that suggest a balance is established between maximizing downstream exploration of the DNA while minimizing the number of rare trajectories to guarantee the greatest chance of a successful search.","PeriodicalId":391184,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115926059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electroencephalogram (EEG) signals play an important role in the diagnosis of epilepsy. In addition, multi-channel EEG signals have much more discrimination information than a single channel. However, traditional recognition algorithms of EEG signals are lack of multichannel EEG signals. In this paper, we propose a new method of epileptic seizure detection based on multichannel EEG signals. Both unipolar and bipolar EEG signals are considered in our approach. We make use of approximate entropy (ApEn) and statistic values to extract features. Furthermore, we tested the performance of four different Support Vector Machines (SVMs). The results reveal that the grid SVM achieves the highest totally classification accuracy (98.91%).","PeriodicalId":391184,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126212585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We provided a fast, reliable and low cost method to solve this difficulty. We proposed a method using a high density hot Ozone vapor to clean the organic pollutant on the slide surface. Further, we added a Chemical Vapor Deposit system (CVD) in the operating chamber to process the surface energy treatment with the biochips. In this way, the hydrophilic or hydrophobic character of biochip surface could be controlled. A nozzle of CVD system is a long metal capillary needle used to inject chemistry liquid into the reaction chamber directly. Different from the common CVD systems, we used the chemical vapor guiding pipe, so there is no liquid jam in the guiding pipe. Moreover, we can get a high quality coated thin film by steaming the hot vapor to the slides in a sealed vessel without any vacuum equipment. The features of this system are fast, low cost, and easy to be operated. All processes are completely integrated in one chamber. The producing period of the biochips may be reduced from ten hours to one hour.","PeriodicalId":391184,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131149271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alternative polyadenylation changes the length of the mature mRNA’s 3’UTR. Since 3’UTRs have been shown to contain regulatory elements that control mRNA functioning, alternative polyadenylation plays an important role in controlling the expression of human genes. Prediction of polyadenylation sites can help with the identification of genes and aid our understanding of the mechanisms of alternative polyadenylation. In this study, we constructed a system for mRNA polyadenylation site prediction in human genes using SVM and based on an analysis of the sequence alignment between pair-end diTags (PET) and genome sequences. The PET sequences were mapped to the reference genome more accurate compared to earlier methods. We also analyzed single-site type and multiple-site type sequences PET sequence datasets and found that the frequencies of each nucleotide were different when the single-site type and multiple-site type PET sequences were compared.","PeriodicalId":391184,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering","volume":"430 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131580219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several methods have been proposed for segmenting these MR images, however, these methods are not dedicated to segmenting the pectoral muscle. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a practical and general-purpose approach for detecting segmenting in the pectoral muscle boundary based on the structure tensor. The segmentation work flow comprises four key steps: preprocessing, detection of the region of interest (ROI) within the breast region, segmenting the pectoral muscle and finally extracting and refining the pectoral muscle boundary. From experimental results we show that the proposed method can segment the pectoral muscle exactly. In addition, the proposed method will allow the application of the CAD and registration for various breast images.","PeriodicalId":391184,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129007485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An increasing number of studies has shown that the risk of getting diseases and cancers is associated with the co-occurrence of some contain single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Determining the disease-causing SNPs has become an important objective. In order to study the SNPSNP interaction in breast cancer, we used a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to compute the difference between the control and case data and performed a feature selection from different SNP combinations with their corresponding genotypes. The best combination of SNP-SNP interactions is the maximal difference of co-occurrences between the control and case groups. In this study, we explored the SNP interaction of 19 SNPs in 372 controls and 398 cases of breast cancer association using simulated SNP data of breast cancers. The odds ratio (OR) were used to evaluate the breast cancer risk in terms of the best combination of SNP-SNP interactions. Compared to their corresponding non-SNP combinations, the estimated OR of the best predicted SNP combination with genotypes for breast cancer is significantly greater than 1 (about 1.771 and 2.417, confidence interval (CI): 1.223-4.371, p","PeriodicalId":391184,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125216990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twelve female volunteers with metabolic syndrome, who aged between 30 and 60 years, and resided at Jiantan, Taiwan, were studied. All subjects participated in the weight loss program for 3 months comprised of the nutrition education and aerobic exercise (three times a week). The blood tests and HRV of subjects were determined, and the data were analyzed statistically using dependent sample t-test. The results of this study showed that the average of the waist circumference and the level of fasting plasma glucose and total cholesterol was significantly reduced in all subjects after having a 3-month weight loss program (P<0.05). Moreover, the three parameter values (total power, high frequency and low frequency) of HRV in those subjects increase significantly, compared to their baseline values (P<0.05). In our study, we concludes that a 3-month weight loss program combined with the nutrition education and aerobic exercise improves the body composition, the value of fasting glucose, the level of total cholesterol and the function of autonomic nervous system in the subjects with metabolic syndrome. In a previous work, we analyzed the impact of different epistatic models on the accuracy of exhaustive computational methods. Those methods have good accuracy, but they are by nature, highly computationally demanding, hence not well suited for large population size or large number of SNPs, as found in genome-wide studies. In this paper, we report the results of a comparative study of methods for detecting epistatic interactions, based on recent trends, namely greedy and Bayesian computational approaches. Our experiments reveal that all methods have better performance in scenarios with higher values for heritability and minor allele frequency (MAF). In general, in terms of accuracy, BOOST outperformed the other methods studied. Even presenting an statistically significantly better performance, BOOST could not reach 40% accuracy when there were 50 or more SNPs, for cases with heritability 0.01 and MAF 0.2, even with a large number of individuals.
