The ONE was installed at the center of Sagami-Bay in May 2003 for the purpose of discharging density controlled water, which is adjusted by mixing the up-welled deep ocean water (DOW) and surface water, into the euphotic surface layer, in order to investigate the effect of DOW for developing a new fishing ground. The Marino-Forum 21's ONE project was started in 2000. During the conceptual design stage, two types of ONE were studied to reduce the installation cost and site construction duration. One was called \"fix riser type\" and the other was \"pin riser type\". In the selection of the concept, the most important technical aspects were riser fatigue strength and strength during upending. At first, a ridged connection type was examined since the upending of an entire ONE was problematic because of its heavy top. Although the possibility of upending was confirmed by simulation, the concept was not selected. Further investigation indicated that the riser needed to have a very high fatigue strength and construction cost was very expensive. The \"pin riser type\" was finally selected. One of the most difficult technical challenges was that the riser is installed by the upending method. The entire length of the riser is prefabricated at the yard and towed to the site by hanging from a spar buoy and with two additional barges supporting horizontally. At the site, the riser is set to an upright position by the free fall upending method. There was the possibility that a very large bending stress may occur during free fall upending due to the riser's large diameter and weight. The model basin study was performed to establish and confirm the analytical method to simulate suitable riser behavior during towing, installation, operating and especially during free fall upending","PeriodicalId":390971,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '04 MTS/IEEE Techno-Ocean '04 (IEEE Cat. Finding a good one depends on choosing the right parameters for the generation of the reservoir, intuition and luck. The method proposed in this article eliminates the need for the tuning by hand by replacing it with a double evolutionary computation. First a broad search to find the right parameters which generate the reservoir is used. Then a search directly on the connectivity matrices fine-tunes the ESN. Both steps show improvements over other known methods for an experimental limit-cycle dataset of the Twin-Burger underwater robot.","PeriodicalId":390971,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '04 MTS/IEEE Techno-Ocean '04 (IEEE Cat. Therefore, by using an ellipse-like laser beam cross-section for underwater range finding, we are really interested in understanding the quality of range finding with different peak detection algorithms. According to our previous results, we found that the peak detection algorithm of illumination center is good for estimating the location of the laser spot in the image. However, background noise is still a serious problem while selecting a square of pixels for centroid calculation. In this paper, we modified the illumination center to a different algorithm which introduces the technique of the principal component analysis (PCA) to the centroid calculation. This algorithm restricts the selection of pixels to a region within an ellipse for centroid calculation. According to the results of range finding, we found that the ranging quality achieved by using the algorithm of the modified illumination center is much better than that obtained by using the algorithm of the illumination center. Therefore, the algorithm of the modified illumination center is proved to be effective to reduce the effect of background noise on range finding. Also, this result demonstrates that the way of selecting effective pixels for centroid calculation plays an important role.","PeriodicalId":390971,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '04 MTS/IEEE Techno-Ocean '04 (IEEE Cat. The SDF filter synthesis involves using the whole image which in turn creates redundancies in the distinguishing features. A number of different schemes have been used to try to reduce the data in SDF filters in order to make them more practical, efficient, and reliable. The KLT is one method to reduce the redundancies in a set of training images to create a new data matrix. This data matrix has a new coordinate system in which the axes of the system are in the direction of the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix of the training set. With the realigned data found in the data matrix, the principle component images can be extracted. Principle component images are comprised of the variations of the original training images. This minimizes the training data to the necessary information that is needed for image recognition. The principle component images then become the training set to be used in the SDF filter. Because the KLT allows for the reduction in redundancies by examining only the variations of this new training set, it will increase the correlation found in this implementation of the SDF filter.","PeriodicalId":390971,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '04 MTS/IEEE Techno-Ocean '04 (IEEE Cat. The tests were conducted under earthquake input motions, making the maximum acceleration level change. The results from these experiments indicate that the drainage provided by recycle artificial drains can significantly reduce pore pressure generation and deformation of the caisson type quay wall. The present study also shows that drain method is useful even under strong earthquake shaking to protect the horizontal movement of the caisson structure.","PeriodicalId":390971,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '04 MTS/IEEE Techno-Ocean '04 (IEEE Cat. Wind velocity and direction at the three points, light on-off signal, electric power generation rate, and battery voltage corresponding to the stored electric power were recorded continuously for eight months without interrupt. Therefore the roll effect has to be considered in the horizontal equations of motion of the ship to predict the maneuverability well. In this paper, a new method to determine a model structure of hydrodynamic rolling moment acting on a ship and estimate its coefficients by applying the system identification technique to the data of sea trial tests or free running model tests has been proposed. To obtain the motion data to be applied to the proposed algorithm, the apparatus of free running model of a large container ship was developed and the standard maneuvering tests were carried out in a lake. The model structure was built in through the data of the turning circle tests and the 20-20 zig-zag test, and then confirmed through the 10-10 zig-zag test. We conclude that the model structure of hydrodynamic rolling moment can be established easily through the free running model tests without a number of captive model tests.","PeriodicalId":390971,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '04 MTS/IEEE Techno-Ocean '04 (IEEE Cat.
