After reviewing the linguistic, epigraphic, and philological evidence, I conclude that this etymology is untenable. From here I turn to the Linear B data and demonstrate that the e-pi-ko-wo of the Pylian o-ka texts (ca. 1200 B.C.) should be interpreted as /epikor woi/; this presents us with the linguistic antecedent of ἐπί- κουρος, which should be etymologized as a prepositional Rektionskompositum, where ἐπί governs κόρϝος (‘he who is in close proximity to the κόρϝος (warrior)’ / ‘he who is attached to/accompanying the warriors’). Early in the Archaic period, this older Mycenaean term was replaced by a new coinage - σύμμαχος - which more appropriately described a military relationship binding one Greek polis to another. These conclusions are supported by early epic usage, historical linguistic analysis, and a full study of the Linear B texts in question. This new etymology has stimulating archaeological correlates and exemplifies the importance and broad applications of the Linear B texts for the reconstruction of Greek prehistory and society and our understanding of the epic tradition","PeriodicalId":38825,"journal":{"name":"Kadmos","volume":"7 1","pages":"39 - 88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82100206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Es lasst sich nachvollziehen, wie die Steinmetzen im Lauf ihrer Arbeit das Rastersystem immer besser an die Erfordernisse des ausergewohnlichen Inschriftentragers anzupassen versuchten. Besonders deutlich wird dies in der Einfugung zusatzlicher Rasterpositionen, um die Verbreiterung des Schaftes nach unten hin auszugleichen. Scheinbare Unregelmasigkeiten sind in Wirklichkeit absichtsvolle Abweichungen, durch die zum einen eine sprachkonforme Zeilentrennung (nach Silbengrenzen) realisiert und zum anderen auf Platzmangel reagiert wurde. Die Rekonstruktion des Stoichedonrasters speziell der Sudseite erlaubt eine eindeutige Bestimmung der Zeichenanzahl in der ersten Zeile. Hieraus ergibt sich eine Entscheidung in der lange diskutierten Frage nach dem Errichter des Monuments: Es kommt nur der xanthische Dynast Xerẽ i in Frage. Anhand der genealogischen Passagen der lykischen Prosainschrift lasst sich dessen Stellung innerhalb der Dynastie von Xanthos als Sohn Arppaχus, Enkel Kuprllis und jungerer Bruder Xerigas bestimmen. Der durch den historischen Bericht des Inschriftenpfeilers abgedeckte Zeitraum von 430/429 bis 412/411 durfte im Wesentlichen der Regierungszeit Xerẽ is entsprechen","PeriodicalId":38825,"journal":{"name":"Kadmos","volume":"11 4 1","pages":"139 - 172"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82833259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on synchronic combinatory evidence, it can be assigned the phonological interpretation /allV(n)t-/ (n.). Its closest demonstrable cognates are Kizzuwatna Luwian /arlanuwa-i/ ‘to replace, relocate’ and Lydian arlil(i)- ‘belonging to the homestead, household’, which suggests the reconstruction of *arl(a)- ‘place’ at an earlier stage of the Luwian language. The Luwian and Lydian words treated in this paper are likely to be ultimately derived from the Anatolian verbal root ‘to stand’ (cf. Hittite artari ‘stands’). The original meaning of Hittite pēda- was possibly ‘plain’. An additional result of this article consists in the improved understanding of several Luwian and Lydian passages.","PeriodicalId":38825,"journal":{"name":"Kadmos","volume":"34 1","pages":"1 - 28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88054432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hermes Areiās would be either a derivative in *-ās of Ares or, according to a recent suggestion, an abbreviated compound in the first member of which Ares would figure. The present paper argues for a different solution, taking a-re-ja (dat.) /aleii̯āi/ as an apposed noun epithet of the root *h2leu̯- ‘to ward off’. Nouns in apposition to divine names are not uncommon in 1st millennium Greek (type Artemis Εὐλοχία ‘Good Delivery’), and Hermes Aleia ‘(active) Protection’ or ‘Defense’ fits neatly with Hermes’ character as a helping deity and a god of boundaries, as shown both in the myths related to him and in several of his epicleses in alphabetic Greek. Aleiă is best taken as a feminine verbal derivative in *-ih2: this type is the source of other action nouns that are either personified or have a religious background, such as αἶσα ‘destiny’ and μοῖρα ‘fate’. Furthermore, Aleia can be viewed as an independent testimony of the *-u̯i̯- > *-i̯i̯- development in Mycenaean (type i-je-re-ja ‘priestess’).","PeriodicalId":38825,"journal":{"name":"Kadmos","volume":"19 1","pages":"67 - 82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79162155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alcuni elementi che erano stati considerati come simboli decorativi sono stati re-interpretati, invece, come elementi semantici del repertorio geroglifico cretese. Nel valutare l’attendibilita di questa ipotesi a livello sistemico, proponiamo di attribuire ad alcuni segni del repertorio una funzione logografica, sottolineata dall’uso di filler decorativi che sembrano isolarne la posizione all’interno di una sequenza di sillabogrammi. Come esempio sotteso a questa metodologia, si e rivelata istruttiva una computazione statistica delle attestazioni del segno 044 i soprattutto per gli esempi integrati nelle sequenze ripetute fino ad oggi interpretate come ‘formule’. Alla luce di queste considerazioni, offriamo una nuova interpretazione dell’iconografia di questo segno. Dagli inizi degli studi sul geroglifico, il segno 044 i e stato associato alla rappresentazione di una ‘cazzuola’ (‘trowel’). Qui invece dimostriamo come sia piu plausibile e coerente associarlo alla raffigurazione del cosiddetto Petschaft, una forma funzionale e sofisticata di sigillo a una faccia, utilizzata in un periodo in cui il sistema amministrativo era basato sulla rendicontazione delle attivita attraverso l’uso di sigilli impressi su cretule d’argilla.","PeriodicalId":38825,"journal":{"name":"Kadmos","volume":"79 1","pages":"17 - 36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76637714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
