Owing to the lack of measurement sensors, modal features are only measured at master degrees of freedom (DOFs) of a few first models instead of all DOFs of a structural system. Accordingly, a modal strain energy-based index (MSEBI) is employed to determine the most potentially damaged candidates. Then, an XGBoost-driven ensemble learning model is constructed from a finite element method (FEM)-simulated dataset. In which, inputs are eigenvectors corresponding to master DOFs, whilst outputs are damage ratios of suspected members. The accuracy of such a model is continuously enhanced by removing low-risk members via a damage threshold. As a consequence, the present paradigm can reliably detect damage to trusses. All test examples are programmed in Python to illustrate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133596655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the analysis of environmental impacts and the assessment of the overall sustainability performance of UHPC applications is quite limited.This study presents the results of determining the total energy embodied and CO2 emissions causing the greenhouse effect of a rural bridge using UHPC compare to the normal concrete (NC) one by the life-cycle analysis (LCA) method. Environmental impacts are comprehensively considered at all stages from material production; materials and structures transportation; in-situ construction and installation; maintenance and repair during the service life; and finally demolished at the end of the project’s life. The analysis shows that the UHPC application in rural bridge construction can reduce the total volume of materials used by 40-58%, lower 65% total energy consumption and eliminate up to 76% CO2 emissions compared with a conventional concrete bridge. The results also confirm that using UHPC is a viable technical and eco-friendly option for rural bridge construction in Vietnam.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121569041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although a number ofresearch works have been conducted following the Eurocodes to meet the long-term requirement of the country’s development in construction, it is shown that the Russian design standard SP 468.1325800.2019 (SP 468) is also applicable for concrete structures subjected to fire in the Vietnam current context. Tabulated data and simplified calculation methods according to SP 468 are introduced, followed by two practical case studies for demonstration. The calculation results show that by using the simplified calculation method the RC columns’fire-resistant limit can be explicitly determined with a particular safety factor ku, T, and a more economical design solution can be obtained compared to that of the tabulated data method. Additionally, RC columns loaded with small eccentricities exhibit greater fire resistance advantages compared to those with large-eccentricity loading. A number of other useful observations are also discussed in the latter part of this article.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"186 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123426298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many projects choose to construct the spillway’s overhang to save concrete, still assuring working conditions while creating the most cost-effective cross-section of the spillway. Although this will result in a proper partition of the concrete, anchoring the connection between the blocks must be secured;otherwise, the block may separate and even become eccentric and spill over. This may result in objects falling,works being destroyed, and a significant safety danger. This study approaches to ensure the safety of spillwayswith overhanging blocks by calculating and analyzing the risk of block separation and overturning, therebygiving a suitable solution for pouring volume and creating the best anchor connection to keep the whole damsafe and stable during construction and operation.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130027550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these methods require either expensive commercial software or self-developed in-house codes based on structural expertise along with advanced programming skills. Thus, incorporating this software into other complex applications, such as an online structural analysis framework, multiple-objectives truss optimization, structural reliability, etc., is highly challenging. This study proposes a novel and efficient surrogate model for performing truss analysis based on graph theory and deep learning algorithms, which is applicable for various truss topologies with different load scenarios without requiring retraining as other Deep Learning (DL)-based counterparts. The truss connectivityinformation is expressed through adjacency matrices, while material properties, external loads, and boundary conditions are considered node features. The performance and efficiency of the proposed methods are successfully validated with numerous unseen 2D trusses, providing highly similar results compared to the conventional finite element method.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130309227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluated the enhancement of sewer’s sludge dewatering via mixingthe sludgewith different agro-wastes, including corn core powder, rice husk powder, bagasse powder and peanut shell powder. The addition of these agro-waste powders helped decrease the sludge’s moisture contents up to 17% while increase the organic matters nearly to 40% after mixing with the ratio of agro-wastes and sludge of 1:3. Statistical analysis revealed the impacts of both additive types and mixing ratio on moisture content reduction. Among the four types of agro-waste, rice husk was shown to be the best additive to dredged sludges with highest reduction of heavy metal concentration and moisture content. The addition of agro-waste powders to enhance the dewatering of sludges is promising in the context of promoting waste reuse and energy saving.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134323204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) play a crucial role in addressing the growing challenges of urban transportation, such as congestion, pollution, and safety concerns. However, there is a lack of studies to present an overall framework to deploy ITS efficiently in urban areas considering each city's unique conditions. Therefore, this paper develops a three-stage framework to simplify the process of efficient deployment of ITS application services in a specific city. Three stages include identifying potential ITS services, evaluating and ranking the priority of ITS application services, and analyzing legal requirements as well identifying any gaps or areas where the current legal framework may fall short in accommodating ITS technologies. The three-stage framework considers the specific transportation challenges and requirements of each urban area/city, taking into account factors such as traffic patterns, infrastructure limitations, environmental considerations, and future development plans. A case study in Hai Phong city was presented where expert surveys were conducted to assess the current transport situation, evaluate satisfaction and expectation regarding applying ITS services. By providing a comprehensive framework for the efficient deployment of ITS in urban areas, this paper offers valuable insights and guidance to policymakers, transportation planners, and researchers. The framework can be as reference for other similar cities grappling with transportation challenges, facilitating the implementation of effective ITS solutions to transform advanced and sustainable urban transportation systems.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114546940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the dynamic response of the main beam (i.e., girder) of an overhead crane by a surrogate technique based on truncated Karhunen–Loève (KL) expansion and neural networks. First, the physical modeling and the motion equations of the crane system are derived using the Lagrange equation. Then, the dynamic responses of the overhead crane system with a number of the input parameters (i.e., configurations) are estimated by the numerical Newmark-beta integral method. Finally, the surrogates based on the truncated KL expansion and neural networks are constructed for studying the dynamic responses of the girder within a limited reference dataset. It can be stated that with a convergence property, the reconstructed surrogate performs good predictability for characterizing the dynamic responses of the structure. The presented method allows us to study the dynamic analysis and optimization of the crane according to the design conditions in the actual applications.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124481009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Creep behavior of soil depend upon main factors which include time, temperature, soil type, soil structure, stress history, stress state and drainage conditions. In this study, a series of one-dimensional oedometer laboratory creep tests were conducted on samples subjected to cyclic loading in order to study the effect of overconsolidation ratio (OCR) and duration of preloading on the secondary consolidation coefficient of the soft clay. Test results reveal that the secondary consolidation coefficient of theoverconsolidated samples are smaller than that of the normally consolidated samples, and decreases with increasing OCR with a drastic drop for OCR values close to 1. On the basis of the isotache model, an equation for secondary consolidation coefficient compression index is proposed as a function of OCR and duration of preloading. The laboratory tests show that the actual measured secondary consolidation coefficient is independent of time. Therefore, to comply with this reality, the proposed equation was modified to be independent of time and laboratory test results were used to calibrate parameters of the newly proposed equation.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131259916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there have been limited studies specifically on flood-related mortality in Vietnam. This paper presents a longitudinal investigation of flood fatalities in Vietnam. More specifically, we use the available national disaster database and machine learning techniques to investigate theimportance of different attributes of flood damage to the attribute of flood fatalities. The results show that thehousing damage attribute significantly influences the fatality attribute, of which the weights are 0.45, 0.62, and 0.36 for the random forest, boosting, and multiple linear regression techniques, respectively. Thus, it is recommended that the proper policy prioritize housing improvements, establish evacuation plans, and developa strategy for temporary flood shelters in flood-prone areas. Understanding how various components of flooddamage are more likely to lead to fatalities analyzed in this study is critical for developing risk reductionstrategies.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134008612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
