There are four HPFRC mixtures as follows: HPFRC0 (no fiber), HPFRC1 (macro steel fiber, 1.5% by volume), HPFRC2 (micro steel fiber, 1.5% by volume), and HPFRC3 (hybrid fiber, 1.0% by volume macro steel fiber blended with 0.5% by volume micro steel fiber). All HPFRC specimens had an identical size of 40 × 40 × 160 mm3 (width x depth x length). The electrical resistivity of HPFRCs was measured under three temperature levels, including 0oC, 25oC, and 50oC using a chamber machine. The research proved that the electrical resistivity of the studied HPFRCs obviously decreased with increasing of the temperature ranging from 0oC to 50oC. Generally, the temperature exhibited a considerable effect on the electrical resistivities of cement-based composites.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139336757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, an attempt was made to use mixed solid medical waste (WPN) which consisted of shredded waste plastic and chopped waste needles for partial replacement of natural fine aggregate (sand) in concrete mixes at 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% by weight. To examine the validity of the suggested approach, the fundamental concrete properties including workability, fresh and hard densities, water absorption, compressive strength, and flexural strength as well as a leaching test were performed. The curing ages for the concrete mixes were considered to be 7, 14, and 28 days. Fifty-four cubes were molded for compressive strength test, and 72 prisms were cast for flexural strength, whereby 162 cubes were prepared for density tests as well as water absorption test. The results revealed that WPN-concrete mixes exhibited improvement in the workability and steadily decreased both the compressive and flexural strength values of the WPN-concrete mixes which were higher than the mean target strength of lightweight concrete grade M17. Leaching test results indicated the absence of the target components in the leachant. The outcomes of this experimental study demonstrated that reusing WPN as a sand-substitution aggregate in concrete is a good approach to reducing the adverse impact resulting from the improper management of healthcare and medical solid waste.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"62 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139336508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the field of geomechanics, besides the loading path and evolution of microscopic properties, the initial void ratio is a crucial and key factor that governs the mechanical behavior of geomaterials. By using Discrete Element Model (DEM) performed on an idealized 2D assembly of disks, this study demonstrates that the initial void ratio can be affected by several parameters during isotropic compression stage. By varying a wide range of intergranular coefficients of friction and grain size distributions, our numerical results suggest that increasing the intergranular coefficient of friction during the isotropic compression phase leads to looser samples. Furthermore, when the diversity of grain sizes is rich, smaller grains can move and occupy voids, thereby increasing the density of the granular sample. A power-lawrelationship is then proposed that connects the minimum void ratio and the diversity degree of the sample.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124791270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drought hazard significantly impacts socioeconomic, agriculture, and the environment; it directly threatens human lives, livelihoods, food security, and environmental degradation. It is essential to have a drought assessment map to assist in developing and implementing strategies to combat drought. Space remote sensing technology development has enabled efficient and cost-effective monitoring and evaluation of droughts on a large scale, surpassing the capabilities of ground-based observations. This research uses remote sensing technology to monitor and assess the severity of the drought in the Bac Binh district, Binh Thuan province. We analyzed the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) using multi-temporal Landsat 8 satellite data for the severe drought events in 2014, 2017, and 2020. The results indicate a significant increase in the percentage of land area affected by drought, from 50.74% in 2014 to 66.23% in 2020. The obtained maps provide valuable visual data to relevant agencies, assisting with planning preventative measures and mitigating future drought risks.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123312586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the data-driven approach, anArtificial Neural Network (ANN) model with some hyperparameters optimized by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is successfully built. The hidden two-layer ANN model with the number of neurons (5; 6) predicted shear strength with higher accuracy than the models proposed previously in the literature, withR2 = 0.9727 and RMSE = 31.9822 kN for the control dataset. By interpreting the results of the ANN model by the values of SHAP, including the Global SHAP value and SHAP independence plot, the order of influence of the variables on the shear strength value and the predictability of the ANN model can be arranged according to effective depth of section > beam width > longitudinal reinforcement ratio > steel fiber content > concretecompressive strength > shear span/effective depth ratio > fiber tensile strength > aggregate size. Fiber tensilestrength and aggregate size almost do not affect the shear strength value. An increase in the shear span-to-effective depth ratio reduces shear strength, which can be increased by increasing the value of effective depth of section, beam width, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, steel fiber content, and concrete compressive strength.The results of this paper are meaningful in the initial assessment of the shear strength of SSFRC, which helps to speed up the design process and reduce the cost of designing and testing SSFRC beams.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130476834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although previous studies have pointed out several variables directly related to this type of crash, there has been no research to further examine influencing factors resulting from other actors representing inside a roadtransport system and the interactions among them. A systems-based approach, enabling the analysis of the influence of various actors within the road transport system, was used in this study to elucidate the contributingfactors to a road traffic crash involving a truck traveling downhill apparently caused by a brake failure, on a mountain highway in Vietnam. The results indicated that apart from the direct factors leading to the accidentincluding the driver’s inexperience, the vehicle’s low quality, and severe road conditions, other actors at upper levels of the Vietnamese road transport system also had indirect effects on the collision. On the basis of theaforementioned findings, the implications for safety interventions and related policies were also discussed.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132287751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A matrix of thirty column specimens including CFST columns and empty steel tube ones was numerically investigated. Finite element model (FEMs) developed in ABAQUS were used to simulate these specimens, in which nonlinear tridimensional (3D ) finite elements were chosen for modeling both inner concrete core and outer steel tube. In this study, the materials of concrete and steel with compressive strength (f'c ) and yield strength ( fy) ranging from 100 to 120 MPa and from 525 to 595 MPa, respectively, were used. The CFST column specimens were concentric-compressively loaded by three cases, including entirely forcing on both the steel tube and concrete core (CFE), only forcing on the concrete core (CFC), and only forcing on the steel tube (CFS). Moreover, the empty steel tubes (EST) specimens were also compressively loaded. The numerical analysis results showed that the column’s mechanical behavior and load-carrying capacity mainly depend on the loading cases. In which, the CFC loading case leads to the highest load-carrying capacity and followed by the CFE loading case due to the confinement effect on the concrete core offered by the steel tube. Meanwhile, the CFS loading case results in the lowest load-carrying capacity of the CFST columns because the inner concrete core just keeps the outer steel tube more stable under compression loading compared to the EST loading case. Increasing the values of f'c and fy leads to a significant increase of the CFST column’s load-carrying capacity in cases of CFC and CFE.","PeriodicalId":387908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (STCE) - HUCE","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126033935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Vietnamese Government has regulations on recycling and collecting CDW for reuse, recycling to environmental protection through Circular No. 08/2017/TT-BXD in 2017, and Directive 41/CT-TTg in 2020. Waste concrete fines (WCF) are generated during demolishing process or crushing of CDW materials. To save natural resources and increase the recycling rate, a disc pelleting technology has been used to recycle WCF. The pellet machine has a disk with 1.5m of diameter and 0.3m of depth; tilted at an angle of 55 degrees and the rotation speed from 15 to 22 rpm; the capacity is 0.5 to 0.8 tons per hour. This paper presents the results of pelletizing WCF research to produce synthetic aggregate (SA). The SA pelletized by WCF and cement had an apparent specific gravity of 2.45 – 2.55 g/cm3, a dry bulk specific gravity of 1.85 – 1.95 g/cm3, a crushing value of 19.2 – 29.9%, a LA (Los Angeles) value of 23 – 33% and water absorption around 13.2%.
