Conourlet transform is a non separable two dimensional transform which can well capture the geometry of edges in the images which convey important information for the human visual system (HVS). Here, marginal statistics of each transform subband are modeled by a Generalized Gaussian Density (GGD) model and the GGD parameters-α and β- are granted as the extracted features from the corresponding subbands and the fingerprint recognition is done based on k-NN classifier employing Kullback-Leibler Distance (KLD) measure. The fingerprint recognition results confirm the high efficiency of the proposed system comparing with the state of the art methods.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115189778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Information obtained from such systems are imprecise in nature but is used for important decision making tasks. This precipitates the need to dynamically compute the quality of information (QoI) based on sensor observations. However, the heterogeneity of sensors, the addition or removal of sensors, and the complexity of media stream processing make it a very challenging task. In this paper we propose a framework for computing QoI in a dynamic sensor environment, which is designed using a service-oriented publish-subscribe mechanism. In this framework, the sensors, stream processing units and other components are all loosely coupled, providing the flexibility for addition, replacement, or removal of any components without affecting the target application. We envision that the proposed framework will serve as a test bed for real time QoI measurement and other instrumentation application while at the same time demonstrate the flexibility much needed in a dynamic sensor environment.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115217582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From one side, it requires the use of sensors, signal conditioning circuits, analog to digital converters and processing blocks. From another, it requires an in-depth knowledge of measurement concepts such as: accuracy, calibration, resolution, effective number of bits, noise, dynamic range, etc. In this paper, the authors propose a new educational test-bench, best tailored for undergraduate bachelor students in mechatronics and aimed at familiarizing on signal data acquisition and measurement when performed in a mechatronics context. The system consists of a sliding cart moving on a linear guide driven by a stepper motor and equipped with a red green blue sensor. Good feedback from students has already been received.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116852891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The techniques available to build and identify these models operate under the assumption that “sufficiently many” measurements are available. In most cases, the model quality improves when the number of measurements increases. Unfortunately, measurement time is expensive and in some applications it is even infeasible to increase the number of measurements. For these kinds of applications, classical modeling tools become untrustworthy and no alternatives are available. In this paper, we introduce fractional order differential equations instead of ordinary differential equations to model linear systems. The major advantage of the presented technique is that only a small number of parameters is needed to obtain a very flexible model. We propose an identification technique which replaces the ordinary differential equations by fractional order differential equations with a smaller number of parameters.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115866140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Flame images are acquired using eight optical fiber bundles and two RGB CCD (charge-coupled device) cameras from eight different directions on one side of the burner. The new tomographic algorithm which combines the LFBP (Logical Filtered Back-Projection) and SART (Simultaneous Algebraic Reconstruction Technique) is proposed for the 3-D reconstruction of the gray-levels for two primary color (Red and Green) images. The temperature distribution of the flame is then determined from the ratios of the reconstructed gray-levels of the two primary color images based on the two-color principle. Experimental results on a gas fired combustion test rig are also presented and discussed. The results demonstrate that the proposed technique is effective in measuring the 3-D temperature distribution of the flame.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115318515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With these devices a big wireless network can be considered. In the last generation of phone there are a subset called smartphone, the use of this subset is growing. These devices are more and more sophisticated, capable of measuring many parameters from environment. In order to do that this smartphone is equipped with a several sensors and by means of an application (APP) that pick up the information from each sensor, it is possible to send, share, analyze, and display the measured data. Nevertheless, people could use this data without real information on accuracy of measured parameters. Thanks to these devices in the next few years there will be the opportunity to have a big wireless sensor network. With this paper the authors begin to implement the first application that evaluates the uncertainty on data sensors.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115381236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are a prerequisite for advanced control strategies. White-box models of distillation columns already exist, but they are often too time consuming to calibrate in real industrial cases. This paper models a binary distillation column using a black-box model in the frequency domain. One of the identification challenges of distillation columns is the long transient response that causes leakage errors in the frequency domain. This problem is solved using a recently developed local polynomial method. Furthermore, we propose a simple expedient to model the variations in the column response that are caused by the changes in ambient temperature. The results are illustrated using both simulation data of a white-box model and using real measurements.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123071444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, this promising technique is sensitive to boundary effect. Here, a new technique based on multivariate grey model termed as GM(1, 3) is developed for boundary extension in BEMD. More specifically, pixel values and coordinates of the image are regarded as characteristic data series and relative data series of GM(1, 3), respectively. Therefore, the extended image is decomposed into several BIMFs and a residue. Eventually, the corresponding parts of the BIMFs as well as the final residue are extracted as the decomposition results of original image. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is tested on hyperspectral classification in which the generally acknowledged support vector machine (SVM) is adopted as classifier. Experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121689940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
