With a size of 18mm × 16mm × 4 mm, this IMU provides full control over the data of a three-axis accelerometer, a three-axis gyroscope, and a three-axis magnetometer. It meets the design prerequisites of a space-saving design and eliminates the need of a hard-wired data communication while still being comparable to state of the art commercially available MEMS IMUs. A CC430 microcontroller sends the collected raw data to a base station wirelessly with a maximum sensor sample rate of 640 samples per second. Thereby, the IMU performance is optimized by moving data post processing to the base station. This development offers important features in embedded microsystem applications with their significant size and weight requirements.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126355307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes to explore such novel approaches as inspired by multi-agent system (MAS) researches that conduct systematic investigation of interaction between autonomous entities. Within the MAS framework, a hierarchical WMSN architecture is established and swarm intelligence is introduced to facilitate its formation. Contract net protocol is employed to achieve efficient resource allocation among the sensor nodes for the purpose of intruding target classification. To make the best global decision, the mechanism of committee voting is exploited to combine all the individual decisions. The supervised machine learning techniques of Gaussian process classifier is presented for investigating the performance of the proposed hierarchical WMSN architecture. Simulation experiments with real-world data have been extensively performed to evaluate the proposed architecture, resource allocation and decision fusion mechanisms, and the results show that the proposed MAS approaches are effective and efficient.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126753200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefor long term power profiles have been analysed, which show the available energy per transducer over time. These profiles have been investigated according to their ability to supply an energy autonomous system and to improve the availability and reliability of operation. To reduce the failing time of a sensor system by using two independent sources within a hybrid energy harvesting supply, is one of the general aims for this contribution. An energy management circuit has been developed and compared to the state of art solution of combining different energy sources. The additional losses of this method have been simulated. This contribution tends on a method to improve the reliability of an energy autonomous system using two different and independent energy sources and an optimized combination of both within an adapted energy management strategy.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123811014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For addressing the issue of MA reduction in pulse oximetry applications, the physical origins of PPG signals are to be explored and effective signal processing technique may be employed. In this paper, we propose simple and efficient empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method based on the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) for MA reduction in PPG signals. EMD is relatively a new time-frequency analysis technique having wide range of applications. EMD uses HHT calculation to handle non-linear and non-stationary data to find the intrinsic mode function (IMF) components and analyze the variations in power spectrum over time. The efficacy of the proposed method is proved by comparing it with well known wavelet transform based MA reduction method for the PPG data recorded with different MA (Horizontal, Vertical and Bending motion of finger). While statistical analysis demonstrated the robustness of the method, the SpO2 estimations from MA reduced PPG signals by proposed method being very close to the actual ones, make it reliable for pulse oximetry applications.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116674957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Samples of the analog signal and differences of the previous estimations are cycled rapidly through a non-uniform coarse quntizer while the round off error is fed back and subtracted from the input. It has been shown that the proposed A/D conversion gives better results than a classical A/D conversion with the successive approximation procedure due to b-times more available sampling points and the adaptive property of the A/D procedure that every previous approximation step to signal become the centre of observation with exponential increasing resolution in the new step. Evaluation of the exponential tracking A/D conversion performs better results considering both systematic and random errors than the tracking A/D procedure with a uniform quantization.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125234008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Wearable object detection system for the blind","authors":"A. Dionisi, E. Sardini, M. Organizing any kind of simple daily activity can be especially difficult; it is not easy for the blind to distinguish the different items, such as packaged foods and drug containers just by touching with their hands. RFID, or radio frequency identification, is a technology that can provide a support for improving the organization and orientation during the daylight activities. RFID uses radio waves to deliver data from a tag, which stores information, to a reader, which can elaborate the information making decisions. This technology is very useful in many different contexts such as scanning passports, shipments and automatic highway toll collecting. As the RFID technology stands out for its inherent technical nature of any basic RFID system, it may involve additional improvements for numerous applications in the field of health care. In this paper, a RFID device designed as a support for the blind in searching some objects is presented; in particular, it has been develop for searching the medicines in a cabinet at home. The device is able to provide to the blind some pieces of information about the distance and simplify the search; besides identifying the medicines, the device is able to provide the user an acoustic signal in order to find easily the desired product as soon as possible. It is noteworthy the fact that it gives the blind some items of information about the distance of a defined object, that is how near or far it is. This application is obtained using the RSSI (Received Strength Signal Indicator) value, measuring the power of the received signal of the tag.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128100316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Xsens MTx sensor is used as the standard for comparison with the Sony Move and the Nintendo Wii (Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus). Initial tests have been carried out by measuring upper limb range of motion and position tracking. Initial measurements utilizing kinematic modeling indicates that the MTx, whose static angle accuracy is 0.3°, can measure a movement of 10 cm with an error less than 0.05 cm. The low cost inertial sensors are capable of measuring the range of elbow flexion motion whose typical range is 150° with an error no greater than 1° and the Sony Move can track movement of 10 cm with an error less than 0.2 cm. In order to track position the system must include tri-axial accelerometers, rate gyros and magnetometers. This requirement is met by the Sony Move. The outcome is that Wii can be used for measuring upper limb range of motion and the Move for range of motion and position tracking based on the kinematic model.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132658113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve the required small uncertainties and probing flexibility new measurement systems have been developed in the recent years. This paper introduces some dimensional metrology research activities at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). A metrological large range AFM with a capable measurement volume of 25 × 25 × 5 mm3 is introduced for versatile measurements of micro-/nanostructures. A special assembled cantilever probe (ACP) which is applicable for direct and non-destructive sidewall measurements is presented. Furthermore, a true 3D AFM using flared AFM probes is described. Finally, the challenges in form metrology are discussed and an ultra precision CMM applicable for form measurements are introduced.","PeriodicalId":387839,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference Proceedings","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133872990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
