León, Oswaldo Morales","doi":"10.1108/ARLA-08-2017-0244","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/ARLA-08-2017-0244","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000Purpose\u0000The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence on the role of tenure as a moderator of the effects of job insecurity (JI) and employability on turnover intentions and absenteeism and will demonstrate its importance in personnel research and theorization.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000Data from a sample of client service representatives of a Peruvian call centre (n=268) were analysed. Tests of hypotheses targeted the intact group as a whole and divided into short (3–10 months), medium (11–14 months) and long job tenure groups (15–37 months).\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Results of general linear models revealed that the effects of JI on turnover intention observed in the intact group were aligned with those seen within each of the tenure groups. However, this was not the case for the effects of JI on absenteeism or the effects of employability on turnover intention and absenteeism. A comparison of results of various regression models indicated that the effects of JI and employability on absenteeism differed in meaningful ways across the intact group and the tenure groups.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000The evidence does not reveal whether the observed differences stem from dynamic personnel selection processes or whether they express different relationships between the variables at various stages of an employee’s trajectory in an organization.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000Human resource managers at call centres will be stimulated to re-evaluate the costs and benefits of promoting tenure, and journal editors will have to consider requesting the inclusion of tenure as a variable in studies focussing on organizations with high turnover.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This study is the first to prove that the effects of JI and employability on turnover intention and absenteeism vary across job tenure levels. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the price determinants of the art of Joan Miró, one of the great masters of Modern Art.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The authors analysed 255 artworks by Miró sold at Sotheby’s and Christie’s between 2003 and 2017, and performed a hedonic price regression to measure the impact of a series of variables on the prices of this artist’s works.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Miró’s works command higher prices, ceteris paribus, when they were painted on canvas, were sold at Sotheby’s and in New York City or London, were traded during the evening session and depending on the period in which they had been painted, the size of their surface area, the number of words used to describe the respective lot and whether they had appeared in an art book. The prices of Miró’s paintings increased substantially between 2003 and 2008 and then declined, coinciding with the global financial crisis of 2009.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000The results were obtained from prices established in art auctions, which represent only one portion of the market.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This is the first exhaustive study carried out on the determinants of the prices of Joan Miró’s works. The artist represents an ideal case due to the large number of his works that have been sold at auctions. As yet, only studies of Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol have been conducted. Joan Miró has well-defined artistic periods, which also allows us to determine the impact on the price of the works of the period in which it was created. It also explores whether a family -friendly organisational culture (FFOC) moderates this relationship.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000A questionnaire (the International Family-Responsible Employed Index) was used to survey 486 employees (Chile: 255, Colombia: 231). The questionnaire consisted of three main sections: independent variables (WFP, FSSB, (FFOC and individual characteristics); dependent variables (organisational outcomes of TI, loyalty and commitment, and individual outcomes of health, WFE, SWFB, PSM and intrinsic); and demographic indicators. Structural equation modelling was used to test the possibility of comparing both countries and the model proposed.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Results show a negative relationship between FSSB and TI, and a positive relationship between FSSB and SWFB and PSM. There are no significant differences among countries, except when looking at PSM. FFOC moderates the relationships between FSSB and TI, between policies and FSSB and SWFB and between FSSB and PSM. It also has a direct effect on PSM.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This paper is one of the first to offer comparative data from organisations and managers in Latin American countries at the work–family interface. Rossi","doi":"10.1108/arla-06-2018-0124","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/arla-06-2018-0124","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000Purpose\u0000The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between women on the board of directors and firm performance in a comparative analysis between Italy and Spain.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The generalized method of moment is employed to examine this relationship in a sample of 1,393 firm-year observations.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The results show that the presence of women on the board has a positive impact on the performance of Italian and Spanish firms. However, when the whole sample is divided into Italy and Spain, some results are remarkable. For Spain, the presence of women on the board has a positive influence on firm performance, whereas for Italy the authors find a negative and significant effect on firm performance. This study also finds that the “masculinity” dimension has a negative impact on firm performance.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000The results of this study have several practical implications. First, masculinity differences within the countries can have a large impact on firm performance and can explain some differences between similar countries. Second, the legal system of countries might not explain adequately some differences in the decision-making process. Third, cultural values and thinking styles, in terms of masculinity, might better explain why the results on the relationship between female directors and firm performance are mixed. In particular, three leading factors highlighted in narrative literature reviews analyzed were: the financial performance measures, the family–firm definitions and the estimation methodologies.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000Overall, a positive relationship between family involvement and financial performance was found. A series of results, those linked to return on assets (ROA) – earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), suggest positive publication bias from family definition and negative publication bias when OLS is used. Tobin’s Q estimates show no linkage to certain traits and aspects of the research process.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000Existing literature review and meta-analysis studies show not concluding results on the family effect upon firm performance. The meta-regression analysis used in this paper allows to examine simultaneously effect size and publication bias. Dabos","doi":"10.1108/ARLA-12-2017-0355","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/ARLA-12-2017-0355","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000Purpose\u0000The purpose of this paper is to examine the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Core Self-Evaluations Scale (CSES) and the Brief Index of Affective Job Satisfaction (BIAJS) in terms of internal consistency and factor structure and to, subsequently, analyze the influence of a set of dispositional factors (namely, core self-evaluations, CSEs) and situational factors (namely, psychosocial factors) on job satisfaction.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000In total, 209 academics from an Argentinian university completed online surveys at two stages, separated in time, to reduce the common method bias.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The Spanish version of the CSES and the BIAJS showed acceptable psychometric properties, which were similar to those previously reported in North-American, European and Asian settings. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that both situational and dispositional factors are significant predictors of job satisfaction.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000The CSES and the BIAJS seem to be valid and reliable instruments for assessing CSEs and job satisfaction, respectively, in Latin America. The adoption of an interactionist approach that includes both situational and dispositional factors is crucial in future research examining job satisfaction.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000Managers should carefully evaluate the personality traits of candidates during personnel selection, as well as the working conditions they offer to their employees, since both factors seem to affect job satisfaction.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000This paper contributes to the validation of two scales that may promote future organizational behavior/psychology research in Latin America. It proposes to identify who (profiles), how (design-thinking methodologies) and what (outcomes as an innovation roadmap: process, product, business model, channel, brand, etc.), since the ways professional designers tackle a problem to reach an innovative solution is related to the designers’ profile.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The paper opted for an exploratory study using a focus group, composed of eight design thinkers and experts. An online survey was also sent to 123 DT leaders, with a return rate of 41 surveys, who worked on an end-to-end innovation project. The data were complemented by documentary analyses.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The paper provides empirical insights into the importance of selecting a diverse DT team. The team composition must be diverse because different profiles are required for different types of innovation and also for each DT phase to create value.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000Given the exploratory research approach being used in the paper, the research results may lack generalization to different contexts. This tool allows the integration of several attributes into single performance measures (cross-efficiency and diversity efficiency) and subsequent classification based on the values obtained for these two metrics.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The classification uses a methodology based on two main tools. The first is an input-oriented cross-efficiency DEA model with ordinal variables to evaluate the suppliers’ performance, and the second is a classification of these into categories that identifies those with good performance for features that make them outstanding.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The assembly company segments its suppliers according to supply frequency. The results show that suppliers working under a just-in-time system achieve superior performance with respect to other suppliers.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000The application of this methodology in a real-world case illustrates how DEA can be a useful tool to support the evaluation and classification of suppliers (a process of increasing complexity given the current trend to include multiple strategic measures together with classical operational measures). Moreover, the methodology illustrated in the study can be adapted to other similar settings.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000The main contributions of this paper are twofold. First, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to illustrate the use of DEA in a real case related to supplier evaluation. The aim is to provide a tool to assist technicians that perform interruption and reconnection of domiciliary services for about 2,000 customers a day.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The real-life problem is modeled as a Single Depot Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (SDVRP-TW), which is a well-known optimization problem in Operations Research/Management Science. A two-stage approach integrated into decision-making software is provided. The first stage considers the clustering of customers generated by a combination of the sweep and the k-means algorithms, while the second phase plans the routing of technicians using the nearest-neighbor and the Or-opt heuristics. The proposed approach is tested using real data sets.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000In comparison with the current route planning approach, the proposed method is able to obtain savings in total travel times, improving operational productivity by 22.2 percent.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000Since the analysis is carried out based on mathematical modeling, assumptions about the relationships between variables and elements of the actual complex problem might be simplified. Although the proposed approach aids the route planning, decision makers make the final decisions.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000The proposed DSS has a critical impact on actual operational practices at the company. Productivity and service level are improved, while reducing operational costs. The decision-making process itself will be improved so technicians and higher decision makers can focus on performing other tasks.\u0000\u0000\u0000Originality/value\u0000The real-life problem is modeled using mathematical programming and efficiently solved through a two-stage approach based on simple, quite intuitive, solution procedures that have not been implemented for such services. Ramírez","doi":"10.1108/ARLA-05-2017-0151","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/ARLA-05-2017-0151","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000Purpose\u0000The purpose of this paper is to propose a combination of forecasting methods that enables a holistic understanding of a future situation, given certain influencing variables by a combination of real data and expert knowledge.\u0000\u0000\u0000Design/methodology/approach\u0000The proposal combines two well-known methods: first, system archetypes that correspond to generic structures, allowing us to handle model management issues, and second, system dynamics that offers technical support on a computational level to assess different scenarios or problem solutions.\u0000\u0000\u0000Findings\u0000The case study considers the situation of the mining industry in Chile and its related variables, including four different scenarios. Based on the proposed methodology, the results indicate that: first, the price of copper is paramount for the industry and its effects are not limited to company profits; second, a long period of downfall in copper prices could halt exploration and development projects.\u0000\u0000\u0000Research limitations/implications\u0000Systemic archetypes are still a subject of research and their application in different fields of knowledge continues to increase to improve this simulation approach.\u0000\u0000\u0000Practical implications\u0000The case study illustrates the combination of a Vester matrix and initial system archetype models that are enriched using the system dynamics approach.
