In this perspective, the Regulatory Norms of the Consolidation of Labor Laws define standards for the preservation of workers' health. This article aims to analyze the temporal evolution of work-related accidents in the construction industry in the state of Santa Catarina (2011-2020). This is an ecological observational study, with time series analysis. The studied population consisted of building construction workers (Classificação Nacional de Atividades Econômicas 41) linked to the General Social Security System, who suffered work accidents, in the state of Santa Catarina, in the years 2011 to 2020. The results obtained indicated the influence of the recurring economic crises that occurred in the period, which had a direct impact on the hiring of labor and the level of economic activity, and consequently, on accident rates. Regarding the consequences of work-related accidents in Classificação Nacional de Atividades Econômicas 41, there was a trend of growth in the rates of leaves due to disability of less than 15 days and a reduction in the rates of incapacity greater than 15 days. This result may be related to the creation, by Social Security, of economic mechanisms that induce more effective work safety actions by companies. There was a considerable reduction in the risk of accidents at work in the construction of buildings in the state of Santa Catarina in the analyzed period.</p>","PeriodicalId":38694,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Trabalho","volume":"23 2","pages":"e20241297"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12443372/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145087606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to conduct a review of the prevalence and contributing factors of post-traumatic stress disorder among Brazilian workers. A literature search was performed in the PubMed and SciELO databases between February and June 2023. The search focused on quantitative studies addressing post-traumatic stress disorder in Brazilian workers, using terms related to post-traumatic stress disorder, occupational exposure, and health aspects. Only studies involving Brazilian residents with post-traumatic stress disorder as an outcome were included, while reviews, case reports, and qualitative studies were excluded. Of the 12 studies initially identified, 11 met the inclusion criteria. Firefighters had the highest prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder, ranging from 6.9% to 37.9%, followed by health care workers - especially nurses - and military police officers, who also showed considerable rates. Work-related factors associated with an increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder included lower occupational ranks or higher job demands, long working hours, repeated exposure to traumatic events, lack of personal protective equipment, and exposure to hazardous materials. The study identified common occupational risk factors across various professions that contribute to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder. Search terms used were: (\"bipolar\") and (\"work\" or \"occupational\"), with a publication date restriction from 2013 to 2023. A total of 20 articles were selected. All included assessments of employability and work performance using work-specific scales or scales containing work-related items. Most studies showed that a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, along with its long-term effects on behavior, neurocognition, emotional regulation, decision-making, sustained attention, volition, and interpretation of interpersonal events, significantly increases susceptibility to unemployment and dependence on government assistance. Even during periods of clinical stability, maintaining employment at levels comparable to healthy individuals remains highly challenging. Furthermore, the impact of bipolar disorder on employment outcomes appears to be distinct from that of major depressive disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia. Clinical studies consistently indicate that bipolar disorder severely compromises both employability and work performance. Its aim is to critically examine existing definitions, identify conceptual convergences and divergences, and propose a more comprehensive and operational understanding of the phenomenon. A total of 24 empirical articles published between 2017 and 2021 were analyzed from the Web of Science and Scopus databases, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The analysis revealed significant conceptual variation, reflecting diverse theoretical and contextual perspectives. A frequent confusion was observed between the terms \"psychosocial risks\" (referring to negative health outcomes) and \"psychosocial risk factors\" (the specific conditions that lead to those outcomes), which complicates practical implementation. Thus, an integrative definition was developed, emphasizing the complex interaction among structural, organizational, social, and individual conditions as well as subjective and contextual elements. The study also proposes a practical approach to operationalize this definition, integrating validated quantitative tools (e.g., Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, Job Content Questionnaire, iWorkHealth) with qualitative methods such as interviews and focus groups. The importance of clearly distinguishing between psychosocial risks, risk factors, and protective factors is underscored to support more effective organizational interventions. While several international and national strategies and policies acknowledge the right to a healthy environment and decent work (and the interactions between these essential factors for life), the implementation of these agendas remains a major challenge, especially in the context of the climate crisis. In addition to recognizing the inseparable relationship between work, environment, and health and promoting integrated policies and actions to achieve environmental justice and decent work, it is urgent to establish more transversal strategies grounded in the specific realities and needs of different territories, prioritize the most vulnerable populations and workers, strengthen the monitoring and control of environmental and occupational hazards and exposures, ensure spaces for participation, and provide workers and society with training for active and qualified engagement.</p>","PeriodicalId":38694,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Trabalho","volume":"23 2","pages":"e20251423"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12443377/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145087625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sustained return to work refers to resuming either original or modified job duties for at least 1 month without recurrent sick leave. This outcome is linked to improved health indicators among workers and reduced socioeconomic burdens resulting from prolonged absences. This study aimed to identify predictors of sustained return to work following sick leave due to mental disorders, based on a literature review conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO databases, including articles published up to July 2023. Quantitative studies were included if they clearly defined sustained return to work and involved workers on leave due to mental disorders. Predictors were categorized into sociodemographic, clinical, psychosocial, and occupational domains. Positive predictors of sustained return to work included favorable expectations regarding the sick leave, self-efficacy, supervisor support, notification systems for prolonged absences, and partial sick leave arrangements. Negative predictors included a greater number of mental disorder episodes, older age, persistent symptoms, job strain, psychiatric/psychological follow-up, medication use, extended duration of leave, employment in small enterprises or specific sectors, and higher educational attainment.
