The direct extraction procedure was tested on packaged AlGaAs/InGaAs HEMTs and good agreement between the simulated and measured S-parameters was obtained at different bias and temperature conditions. We employed a properly designed cryogenic set-up operating in our laboratory that allows to perform DC and RF characterization down to 30 K.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. Similar to medical ultrasonic devices our optical system, the scan-head, is scanning only one-sided along the surface of the specimen and is capable of localizing imbedded absorbers. For the reconstruction of the images from a series of measurements the propagation of the photons is modeled by a diffusion approximation to the Boltzmann transport equation, then linearized and inverted. The deduced ill-posed and very underdetermined system of equations is solved by a conjugate gradient method. Results of measurements and simulations are presented.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. This presentation focuses on the usefulness of the interstitial instrumentation in thermal therapy of brain cancers. We show that appropriate placement of the applicators in the array can produce an irregular heating pattern. Using the example of a waveguide ultrasonic applicator array, we consider array geometry of vertical applicators and applicators at 20/spl deg/ to the horizontal. Acoustic scans for the two systems make evident that evaluation of the heating pattern from measurement of the instrumentation power deposition is reliable only for the case of simple array geometry. We demonstrate that an FEA approach, however, enables prediction of the heating patterns for any array geometry. Our FAE computations for the case of complicated array geometry gave intricate heating patterns that are impossible to predict from measurement of the instrumentation power deposition. Also, the FEA approach illustrates that the heating with more complex array reduces incidental heating, an undesired effect. We demonstrate that power measurements and FEA computations have to be integral steps in evaluation of an instrumentation efficacy for heating.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. In particular, the technique can be particularly useful for muscular functional monitoring during unattended physical activity. A portable NIRS research-grade acquisition system, dedicated to low-noise measurements during muscular exercise, is presented. A spread-spectrum multiplexing scheme significantly enhances system performance. The resulting instrument is compact, lightweight and efficient. Preliminary tests on oxygen consumption during exercise and venous occlusion show excellent detectivity and time response.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. Placing the elements asymmetrically in a cylindrical shell, the wind vector can be reliably measured in two dimensions. Inherent measurement errors due to incipient soiling of the sensor surface, ohmic bridges, shortcuts and ageing of the electrical parameters, are detected with an automatic self-calibration procedure and effectively compensated for. The instants for automatic recalibration are determined without any additional assistance, when identical signals from both sensor elements are observed. The parameters of the PTC sensor model are then determined from the element's I-U-characteristics and used to correct all measured data during operation.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. This paper deals with the problem of estimating the multiplexer loss when there are traffic measurements available. It proposes a new method for the measurement and estimation of the packet loss in packet switched networks, namely it uses this model to calculate the moment generating function. Simulation results, using traces obtained from traffic measurements and from digitized video sequences, are given.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. The accuracy of experimental data in the range 0.3-0.8 nH is first validated by comparing the measured low-frequency inductance with 2D/sup 1///sub 2/ EM simulations. Based on the above results, the well-known current sheet expression for circular spirals is revised and modified to improve its accuracy at lower inductance values. Finally, the original and modified expressions are employed in a lumped scalable model for integrated inductors. Comparisons between simulations and measurements revealed that the modified expression allows error reductions as large as 20% with respect to the original one on both the inductance and quality factor.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. Device parameters of thermal microsensors are essential for evaluating the sensor performances and their simulation modelling. For the thermal microsensors, the thermal parameters are sometimes show important relations to the package, which is not an ideal heat sink. By decoupling the heat equations for the membrane of sensor and package, we first build a multiple-time-constant modelling of thermal microsensors, which describes a more realistic thermal behaviour. The behaviour on spectrum domain and time domain are predicted and been proved by our experiments. An investigation of high frequency response for CMOS compatible thermoelectric infrared sensors is proposed and fabricated. The sensors are fabricated by a 1.2 /spl mu/m industrial CMOS IC technologies combined with a subsequent anisotropic front-side etching stop. To reach a larger response signal, we fabricated a large floating membrane structure with a built-in polysilicon resistor as a signal modulator. It consists of a heating polysilicon resistor and an Al/ n-polysilicon thermopile, embedded in an oxide/nitride membrane. High frequency response of a test sample shows unexpected large signal, which is quite interesting and never reported before. We have made a thoroughly measurement and analysis, and give some interesting results.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. In all methods, the inertial force of a mass is used as the known dynamic force, and this reference force is applied to a force transducer under test. The inertial force is measured highly accurately as the as the product of the mass and the acceleration. An aerostatic linear bearing is used to obtain linear motion with sufficiently small friction acting on the mass (i.e., the moving part of the bearing). Three experimental setups were built for the dynamic calibration against an impact force, an oscillation force and a step force. Ways of integrating the three different methods are discussed.","PeriodicalId":386903,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat.
