These language molecules are released by the bacteria in the environment and are then sensed by their neighbours via specific receptors. Thus, the community can arrange and adapt specific phenotypes in dependence on the cell count termed quorum. Due to the different structures and modifications of the communication molecules bacteria have evolved different languages and dialects, which can in addition give information about time and venue. Moreover, bacteria have small talk with their hosts such as animals, plants and yet humans. Since communication is a prerequisite for the infection of hosts by pathogenic bacteria, the molecular components of the bacterial communication are promising candidates as targets for badly needed new antimicrobial drugs.
","PeriodicalId":38671,"journal":{"name":"Biologie in Unserer Zeit","volume":"50 6","pages":"414-423"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/biuz.202010720","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41302465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the evaluation of the aquatic mollusc species occurring within the city boundaries, numerous sample locations were investigated and standard procedures of animal collection were applied. In total, the city of Salzburg is currently colonized by 24 species of freshwater gastropods and 14 species of bivalves, which corresponds to about 55 per cent of all aquatic mollusc species documented in Austria so far. In natural biotopes, which can be found in the north and south of the urban area, life communities including up to 20 mollusc species can be observed, whereas waters characterized by high anthropogenic influence exhibit a remarkable pauperization of species. Since the discovery of the 5300-year-old Copper Age individual in 1991, at the Tisenjoch in the Eastern Italian Alps, a variety of morphological, radiological, and molecular analyses have been applied that revealed important insights into his ancestry, his life habits and the circumstances surrounding his violent death. In more recent research, the mummy was subjected to modern research methodologies focusing on high-throughput sequence analysis of ancient biomolecules (DNA, proteins, lipids) that are still found to be preserved in his mummified tissues. Thereby, a genetic predisposition for increased risk for coronary heart disease and the stomach pathogen Helicobacter pylori were detected. This application of innovative “-omics” technologies have allowed the reconstruction of his last meal, that was mainly composed of fat and game meat from wild animals supplemented with cereals from einkorn.
\u0000
","PeriodicalId":38671,"journal":{"name":"Biologie in Unserer Zeit","volume":"50 6","pages":"406-413"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/biuz.202010719","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44015142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
