In AVS/RS, autonomous vehicles provide horizontal movement (x and y axis) within a tier whereas lifts provide vertical movement (z axis) between tiers. The transaction cycle time is composed of waiting time for vehicles and lifts, horizontal and vertical travel times, and load/unload times. In this research, we analyze the influence of multiple load/unload points on transaction cycle times and the design-tradeoffs involved in warehouse zoning. We model the system as a multi-class semiopen queuing network model with class switching and develop a decomposition based approach to evaluate system performance and obtain design insights. Our approach does not use any additional sensors and is only based on the observation of existing home automation events. An analysis of user habits is proposed to offer automatic scenarios which adapt to user capabilities. Key control parameters that affect stability of the replenishment policy are the fractional rates of adjustments of discrepancies in WIP and inventory. The effect of these control parameters on the service level (order fill rate) of the production-inventory system which face independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random demand is investigated. A replenishment policy that explicitly accounts for the safety stock, and thus improves the service levels, has been proposed. Multiple standards and technologies are competing for use in these systems. In this paper we study two major wireless standards, IEEE 802.11a,b,g (WiFi), and IEEE 802.15.1–2005 (Bluetooth v1.2) highlighting performance aspects that are relevant to control and automation networks. We demonstrate that these networks can in fact be used for control systems, but discuss some of the factors that must be considered when migrating from a wired to a wireless implementation. For each protocol, we summarize the key facets of the Medium Access Control and Physical layer and present results from performance measurements. This is even more consequential in the airline industry where superior service levels rule the day. That player who gets maximum mappings from the set of his(airline) offerings to the set of customer preferences drives the demand. The economic reforms of 1991 followed by the deregulation of Indian skies has witnessed exponential growth of the airline industry and has resulted in near-perfect competition. This is more so in the International sectors, where once (only)domestic carriers, have commenced across border operations. Hence, demand for the service assumes prime importance and airlines have to be aware of their demand on respective sectors prior to operations. In the above context, this paper discusses a methodology to develop a passenger traffic forecasting model for airlines operating on international sectors from India. The model is a fusion of the gravity model in physics and micro-economic theoretic model linking demand to price. This research provides a comprehensive picture of the factors affecting airline demand, especially, factors outside service that could play an important role in demand growth. The model will be tested on data provided by Air India, the national carrier chosen for the purpose of the study. Vachtsevanos","doi":"10.1109/COASE.2009.5234094","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/COASE.2009.5234094","url":null,"abstract":"Engineering systems, such as aircraft, industrial processes, manufacturing systems, transportation systems, electrical and electronic systems, etc., are becoming more complex and are subjected to failure modes that impact adversely their reliability, availability, safety and maintainability. Such critical assets are required to be available when needed, and maintained on the basis of their current condition rather than on the basis of scheduled or breakdown maintenance practices. Moreover, on-line, real-time fault diagnosis and prognosis can assist the operator to avoid catastrophic events. Recent advances in Condition-Based Maintenance and Prognostics and Health Management (CBM/PHM) have prompted the development of new and innovative algorithms for fault, or incipient failure, diagnosis and failure prognosis aimed at improving the performance of critical systems. This paper introduces an integrated systemsbased framework (architecture) for diagnosis and prognosis that is generic and applicable to a variety of engineering systems. The enabling technologies are based on suitable health monitoring hardware and software, data processing methods that focus on extracting features or condition indicators from raw data via data mining and sensor fusion tools, accurate diagnostic and prognostic algorithms that borrow from Bayesian estimation theory, and specifically particle filtering, fatigue or degradation modeling, and real-time measurements to declare a fault with prescribed confidence and given false alarm rate while predicting accurately and precisely the remaining useful life of the failing component/system. Potential benefits to industry include reduced maintenance costs, improved equipment uptime and safety. Decoupled method proposed in this work plans the path for the robots in two steps. In the first step, for each participating robot agent a path collision free with respect to stationary obstacle is obtained. The coordination among agents is achieved in the second step of the approach by use of off-line strategy for conflict resolution. The key objective of the conflict resolution is dynamic assignment of priorities for path modification of the robot agents. Thus, the agents involved in a local conflict situation coordinate their movement by adopting the lowest movement cost motion paths. Bagul","doi":"10.1109/COASE.2009.5234105","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/COASE.2009.5234105","url":null,"abstract":"After investigating several of different degradation signatures that can potentially characterize aging and failure of computer hard disk drives (HDDs), we identified that reported uncorrect, hardware ECC recovered and read write rate parameters can provide good degradation signature for assessing the condition and remaining useful life of HDDs. Using these signatures as inputs, we develop a neural network model to assess the current health of a HDD. We collected extensive data by conducting experiments on 13 HDDs in an accelerated degradation mode. Experiments on 13 HDDs generated several hundreds of data points during their operating life. We used two thirds of these data points for computing the neural network parameters and the rest for evaluating the accuracy of model predictions.
