Both renewable sources-fueled and fossil-fueled power plants show potentials to increase the overall efficiency of energy systems therefore to mitigate their impact: policy makers have learnt of their importance and now, at local level, the situation seems the opposite of just few years ago. An increasingly number of new renewable biomass power plant permits are filled out and submitted to local authorities, leaving them with the new dilemma whether or not to grant all of them. Few are the (local) energy plans that are so dynamic to manage this new rush, whereas incentives need to be tuned up accordingly. Optimization techniques is not a new concept, although different new models have been proposed and used over the last 30 years. Top down versus bottom up models have been analyzed to characterize the studied context, according to the final scopes. Improvements have been added while making (i) the models bigger and (ii) more complicated to catch more details and to understand the interconnections amongst energy systems and infrastructures, technologies, resources, environmental factors and the effect of certain (energy) policy actions. In this paper an application of the Standard Markal model of an European area of half a million people is illustrated. The aim is to provide few clear indexes when coming to underpin which local actions are the most performing to achieve energy and environmental local targets with respect to conversion technologies. A careful description on how the electricity demand is assessed is also reported. The role of green tags is investigated. Constrains and environmental targets, to partially achieve the 20–20–20 European commitment, are also discussed to explain the proposed scenarios results.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124782632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The root cause of harmonic interaction/resonance problems is introduced. Starting with a simple PI regulator controlled inverter, the output impedance of the converter is modeled and proven by simulations to be operative for forecasting harmonic interactions. Moreover, another test case based on an inverter with multiple PR controllers is designed and modeled to clarify impedance-based design and harmonic interaction analysis. Assuming the impedance models of individual inverters and local loads within a distribution grid are knowledgeable, especially in the case of new grids under construction, harmonic interactions between the grid and a certain number of DG inverters can be preliminarily estimated.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124994786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on differential evolution (MODE). In this algorithm, the differential evolution (DE) concept for the single objective optimization is extended to multi-objective optimization. The EEPD problem is formulated as a true nonlinear constrained multi-objective optimization problem with competing objectives. The proposed approach employs a diversity-preserving technique to overcome the premature convergence and search bias problems and produce a well-distributed Pareto-optimal set of non-dominated solutions. A hierarchical clustering algorithm is also imposed to provide the decision maker with a representative and manageable Pareto-optimal set. Moreover, fuzzy set theory is employed to extract the best compromise non-dominated solution. Several optimization runs of the proposed approach have been carried out on IEEE 30-bus test system. The results demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach to generate well-distributed Pareto-optimal solutions for the multi-objective EEPD problem and the comparison with the results reported in the literature demonstrates the superiority of the proposed approach and confirms its potential to solve the multi-objective EEPD problem.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130236836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As it is not economical to install PMUs in all the network buses, this paper also highlights a PMU placement technique based on the so-called Tree Search Method (TSM) to determine a near-optimal solution for the PMU placement problem. TSM application to a 115 kV system depicted from the Saudi Electricity Company-Eastern Operating Area (SEC-EOA) network is then presented. Mathematical formulation to calculate the fault distance is discussed. Simulation results obtained from both PSCAD and MATLAB to determine the locations of different types of faults are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130238791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MPPT works on the principle of adjusting the voltage of the solar PV modules by changing the duty ratio of the boost converter. The duty ratio of boost converter is calculated for given solar irradiance and temperature condition by a closed-loop control scheme. The ANFIS is trained to generate the maximum power corresponding to the given solar irradiance level and temperature. The response of ANFIS based control system is highly precise and offers very fast response. Simulation results are provided to validate the concept.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127698494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The systematic deployment of renewable DG units can improve distribution system performance in terms of voltage support, loss minimisation, emission reduction, and reliability improvement. It is important to consider technical and economic incentives with the integration of renewable DG units. In this paper, a multi-objective distribution system expansion planning model with integration of renewable DG units is presented. It proposes comprehensive approach to address multiple conflicting objectives without loosing generality. A problem-specific particle swarm optimisation (PSO) based search method is used to solve the formulated planning problem. Scenario based studies are performed to examine the impacts of different DG allocations on system reliability and the investment cost of system reinforcement.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121520260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thorough discussion and simulations are conducted to clarify and highlight the principle of the method. Nonlinear optimization problem formulation is also performed. The proposed cost function takes into consideration the costs of the emissions NOx, SO2, and CO2 as well as the operation and maintenance costs. The microgrid considered in this paper consists of wind turbine, micro turbine, diesel generator, photovoltaic array and fuel cell. The Mesh Adaptive Direct Search (MADS) is employed to minimize the cost function of the system while constraining it to meet the costumer demand and safety of the system. Finally, a comparative investigation aiming at assessing the efficiency and applicability of the method is carried out. The method is proven simple and remarkably fast.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126791503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this respect, placing fixed and switchable capacitors in the primary and secondary networks of distribution systems can reduce the energy and peak power losses and improve the voltage profile in the feeder. In this paper, a novel method for simultaneous allocation of fixed and switchable capacitors in distribution systems with varying load is presented. As a cost function in optimization procedure, cost of energy loss, installation and purchase costs of capacitors and cost of peak power loss are considered. For optimization algorithm, GA with new coding and operators are used. One of the significant characteristics of the proposed GA-based method is providing the switching table for allocated capacitors in various loading. The proposed method was tested and compared with other methods in many cases with satisfactory results.","PeriodicalId":386008,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Energy Conference","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114475767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
