It addresses debates about the technique of the observer and the conduct of seminars and describes the many changes in practice over that period. It summarises some of the important discoveries which drew on infant observation as well as clinical experience: Bick’s ‘second skin’, Maiello’s ‘sound object’, Meltzer’s ‘aesthetic conflict’, and numerous investigations of infants with particular vulnerabilities, including Piontelli’s twin studies and more recent observations of infants in a variety of particular life circumstances such as those born via surrogacy or living in foster care. The impressive extensions of the observational method beyond infancy and the use of observation as a clinical intervention are discussed. Finally, the adaptations of the method necessitated by the global pandemic are explored, with an emphasis on the changed role of the mother in distant observation. A clinical example using many different forms of distant contact to support a highly vulnerable mother/ infant couple is presented as an encouragement to engage with new ways of working.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"25 1","pages":"4 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44647004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since retirement she has worked there as a visiting lecturer and also at Roehampton University. Her book of selected papers Love the Wild Swanwas published in Routledge’s World Mental Health series in 2017. She was course tutor for the Tavistock’s MA in Psychoanalytic Studies for non-clinical students for ten years until July 2011. A past editor of the Journal of Child Psychotherapy, she has published her work in papers and academic books internationally, the most recent being Media and the Inner World, 2014 (eds. Bainbridge and Yates, Palgrave Macmillan) In 2010 she was awarded the Jan Lee memorial prize for the best paper linking psychoanalysis and the arts during that year. Apart from her clinical experience over the years, one of her principal interests has been in the links between psychoanalysis, culture and the arts, as well as making psychoanalytic ideas accessible to a wide audience. To that end she has published a pamphlet HELP! for parents and children about psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Her memoir ‘Pieces of Molly: An Ordinary Life’ was published by Karnac in November 2014. Her most recent publication is Psychoanalysis and Other Matters (Routledge 2019), and she has a YouTube channel ‘Granny and her friends read children’s stories’ – a free resource for busy parents and carers.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"24 1","pages":"155 - 157"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46735654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I am delighted to have been asked to update readers of this Journal on infant mental health developments in Scotland. The development of Infant Mental Health services in Scotland and elsewhere should be underpinned by an evidence base including tried and tested ‘tools’ to help us to understand the baby’s experience. Psychoanalytic infant observation is one suchmethodology alongsideother valuable ways of observing, which can facilitate interventions to support the infant’s mental growth and the development of healthy, nurturing relationships. Examples of these include Brazelton assessments and the use of video-interactive guidance (VIG) bothofwhich are used therapeutically to help theparent to see and appreciate their baby’s strengths and their communications about their state of mind. I shall summarise recent developments in Scotland, and then go on to consider linked research and evaluation. Finally, I reflect on training and workforce development with an emphasis on the central place and value of infant observation in this endeavour.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"24 1","pages":"139 - 151"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47060253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sadly, because of the resurgence of Covid-19, the whole day, like so many in the past two years, had to take place on Zoom. The invitation and the preparatory reading stimulated the enthusiasm I have always felt for this application of Esther Bick’s infant observation method. It led me to re-read a number of other things, including initially, re-visiting the description of the aims and scope of this journal (https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/riob), the first chapter of the book, Work discussion: learning from reflective practice in work with children and families written by Jonathan Bradley and Margaret Rustin (2018), a paper on consultation in schools written by Martha Harris in 1967, and a paper of my own about using observation in the work setting written for a special issue of this Journal (Klauber, 1999). The specific focus of the paper is the concept of ‘Nazar’, Evil eye, in India. The paper presents the experiences of a young woman observer in India, going in to observe an infant as a requirement of her psychotherapy training. The paper is an attempt to make sense of what happened five years ago in setting up the observation. It sheds light on how a cultural artefact such as ‘Nazar’ becomes a barrier to being able to undertake baby observation. The article also extends its understanding of what ‘Nazar’ can symbolise, both in the internal and the external world of both observer and observed. It goes on to explore the link between mother’s ambivalence both towards her child and towards the young female observer.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"24 1","pages":"106 - 124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13698036.2021.1953395","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41820550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One difficulty was holding the tension between the different approaches and their theoretical assumptions. The story is told chronologically, firstly reflecting on their own response to the change, and then, through vignettes, looking at detailed aspects of the move for the babies and their families, as well as tracking the emergence of distinct and meaningful online observations. This is followed by a discussion of a particular feature of remote observations that came to be seen as a significant dimension of the material in both observations: that of the family’s agency in positioning the device, and thus the observer, during observations. The authors were members of the same Infant Observation seminar and were both in the second year of two-year observations when the UK government imposed a national lockdown.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"24 1","pages":"92 - 105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46042422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
