Fortuny, Claudio Fuentealba","doi":"10.4067/s0718-50062023000100077","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4067/s0718-50062023000100077","url":null,"abstract":"This exploratory research study characterizes the reasoning of first-year engineering students when they determine that a system of linear equations (SLE) has an infinite solution. Students solve learning tasks that are part of a hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) on solving SLE. The HLT is designed in terms of the mechanism of reflection on activity-effect relationships and on the design heuristic of the emergent models. The results show that solving a SEL with infinite solutions is not easy to represent for students since the solution is not immediate nor intuitive. This is unlike a SEL that has a unique or empty solution. The model redefines the process of training professionals through an educational model focused on the teaching-learning approach. In this model, the variable availability is related to student retention. The variable performance is linked with academic performance and the variable quality with on-time graduation. The model is applied to a university degree in Chile, obtaining different efficiency results by admission cohort (2006-2012) with their respective on-time graduation (2012-2018). It is highlighted the importance of expanding research to achieve an indicator qualification scale that is consistent and standardized. The methodology is quantitative, non-experimental, and descriptive. It surveys 88 future teachers (92% women) enrolled at a private university from the Maule Region (Chile). The results reveal that the strategies most used to address behavioral issues are positive language (22.5%), preventative teaching (14.8%), changing sitting location of students with challenging behavior (12.5%), and re-directing behavior (11.6%). The majority of future teachers show insufficient levels of training, due to limited focus on behavioral management and support in their training programs.
