Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) and Electrically Excited Synchronous Motors (EESMs) have been widely sought after for their potential use in these vehicles. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of salient poles rotor EESMs operating areas defined by: Minimum Current Per Torque (minCPT), Field-weakening maximum voltage limit area, Field-weakening maximum current and maximum voltage limit area and Maximum Torque per Voltage (MTPV). The latter are analyzed and showcased in both d-q and torque-speed domains. The minCLPT (Minimum Copper Losses per Torque) novel optimization method, which uses the EESM excitation current as third degree of freedom, is then explored while investigating the impact of applying negative d-axis current results of the latter algorithm. Findings emphasize on the potential benefits of using the EESM excitation current to extend the machine speed range while providing opportunities of experimenting how the optimal reference field current calculated by minCLPT algorithm can affect the forementioned operating areas. The paper provides valuable insight for researchers and engineers working in the field of electric vehicle propulsion systems.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"209 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83470867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The capability to forecast the temperature behavior is of crucial importance to correctly tune the Battery Management System (BMS). In this paper, an industrial batteries stack is analyzed, where prismatic lithium-titanate-oxide (LTO) cells are used. First, a 3D computational study is conducted to investigate flow and temperature field when the fans-based air-cooling system is on, showing that the BMS temperature sensing system is largely affected by the position of the thermocouples. Then, a zero-dimension lumped model is built for a fast forecast of the cells' temperature both with fans turn on and off. This model, based on an energy balance differential equation, has been obtained through numerical optimization from the experimental data and does not require any thermal characterization techniques. It can predict with a good agreement the cells' temperature in a quick way.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"129 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89623486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This design procedure is validated by experimental results. Different SiC power modules are evaluated concerning conduction and switching losses. Efficiency and power density are evaluated for different switching frequencies and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) techniques, which have a significant impact on the size of DC bus capacitors and cooling system. Precise calculation of losses in the SiC power module is done using the datasheet data as well as data from precise characterization of SiC module. The optimization process to determine the minimum weight of DC bus capacitors and forced air aluminum fin heat sinks is presented in detail. Experimental results on a first assembled converter show small deviations from the estimated losses. However, the total weight of this first version significantly exceeds the calculated one, which leaves a significant path for improvement for the final version of the inverter.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"53 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74437027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, newer designs must comply with the strict flight operational and safety requirements, while achieving optimisation aims, such as reducing aircraft weight and energy consumption. This paper proposes a two-stage optimisation design method for a novel PDS investigated for MEA. Two optimal power scheduling-based models for minimising power losses and PDS weight are formulated in Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP). The first model considers varying load demands and is solved for all flight stages simultaneously in the first design stage for weight minimisation. The obtained architecture is further optimised for all faulty scenarios and selected typical fight stages simultaneously in the second design stage to improve the PDS reliability. Consequently, a low power loss, light weighted, and fault-tolerant PDS architecture is obtained. A case study is provided to exemplify the improvement in the PDS by adopting the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"51 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80265386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This situation becomes unacceptable for the electricity transmission system operator and the implementation of an unbalance compensator is inevitable. In recent years, several power electronic solutions have been proposed. They are based on Power Electronic Building Blocks (PEBB) which can be connected in series or in parallel in order to achieve the required power level. They offer advantages in terms of modularity and implementation of low voltage power devices which thus improve the global system efficiency. In this paper, the authors present two modular topologies based on the principle of the Steinmetz load-balancing circuit. The first topology relies on cascaded AC choppers and the second one is based on cascaded H-bridge inverters. Analytical calculations and simulations allow a comparative analysis of these two topologies in terms of power semiconductor losses and stored energy in reactive devices.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82335505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
