Abstract

The scarcity and the consequent price volatility of high-energy permanent magnets is becoming increasingly evident with the dramatic increase in electric and hybrid electric vehicle and rail powertrains and wind generators more extensive penetration. This overview paper summarizes a few key PM-free electric motor power trains R&D recent efforts concerning their design and control, with case-studies performance of practical interest for road and rail vehicle applications.
