The world is currently faced with a migration crisis caused by the several armed conflicts and the socio-economic and political conditions of many regions of the world. The numerous drownings of African migrants off the coast of Italy is an example of the idea that people migrate to search better living conditions. Migration, however, is nothing new as humans have always moved for different reasons. These movements have influenced many writers who have focused their literary energies to the circumstances of migrants in their new locations. This has produced a vast migration literature. Within the postcolonial context, these movements have generally been from the erstwhile colonies to the colonial metropolis. Guided by their colonial education (which amongst other things created the image of an idyllic land and also that they were members of the colonial states) and propelled by the dire economic and political conditions of their home countries, these migrants moved to these places convinced that they would find better opportunities for themselves. For those who migrated to England, they expected hospitality influenced by the colonialists presenting the British as paragon of propriety. The reality they encountered while there contradicted all their expectations. These experiences of the migrants within the postcolonial context have resulted in a flurry of literature that addresses these questions. This paper is interested in such literature, focusing on Caryl Philips’ The Final Passage and Andrea Levy’s Fruit of the Lemon.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124573911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Cameroon, however, even with a fairly considerable exposure to the English Language, foreign language learners still lack very basic communicative competencies in it relative to other foreign languages. In this study, we sought to describe EFL learners’ degree of exposure to different foreign languages in the Francophone system of education vis-à-vis their performances, explore some striking pedagogic differences in the teaching of English and other foreign languages and finally assess the extent to which learners’ motivations affect their mastery of English and other foreign languages. Drawing from an analysis of a three-year statistics of final year EFL learners’ performances in Lycee de Nkolbisson, an oral assessment, interviews on pedagogic approaches and the motivations of 60 EFL learners, we realized that though learners are more exposed to the English Language, they tend to lack very basic communicative skills in it compared to other foreign languages in the Francophone system of education. It was also realized that, besides poor motivation, there are also pedagogic lapses in the teaching of English to Francophones in the country. This led us to the conclusion that while, practically, pedagogic inconsistencies could account for the remarkable incompetence among EFL learners in Cameroon, it seems to be a micro reflection of a macro indifference towards the learning of English among Francophones in general.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114915555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diplomacy is a tool for international communication and negotiations, and researchers have shown significant interest in it. The main emphasis here is the use of first personal pronouns ‘I’ and ‘we’ as persuasive methods of communicating to their audience, and diplomatic ideas through the tactical use of the inclusion and exclusion of their audience. There is the use of ‘self’ and ‘group’ participation in their productions. Using personal pronouns, the diplomats’ intentions are identified and also help in the construction of their image. The speeches were selected from the official website of Cameroonian Ministry of External Relation. Critical Discourse Analysis was adopted in order to investigate in what context the personal pronouns (I and we) were used in speeches of two Cameroonian ministers of external relations: Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo and Lejuene Mbella Mbella. The findings show that the occurrences of personal pronouns ‘I’ and ‘we’ in the speeches of both speakers differ slightly, particularly in specific contexts of use. They tend to use more of the ‘we’ pronoun than the ‘I’ in their production. This implies that these pronouns are used differently to achieve different results. They are used to reveal the diplomat’s attitude, motivation, social status and trustworthiness as well as paint a positive image of his country.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114365726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While writing is certainly the most conservative medium of communication, the writings of some Cameroonian medical professionals continue to pose a problem of comprehension to patients. In this study, we explored some medical prescriptions and attitudes in order to first, find out the extent to which patients effectively interpret medical prescriptions, and second, explore their attitudes towards the nature of medical prescriptions. Data was limited to 120 randomly selected medical booklets in the city of Bamenda. 170 informants (120 patients and 50 medics) were interviewed. The results revealed a significant use of abbreviations, imperative and shortened clauses in largely slanted and blurred calligraphies. While medical practitioners and pharmacists easily interpret prescriptions, they pose a serious problem of comprehension to non-health personnel. This led us to the conclusion that unclear prescriptions, in a way, deny patients complete access to their health conditions and history.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129080662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flipped classroom with the aid of information technology can make up for the shortcomings of the traditional teaching \"teacher dominates, students are passive\", create a new teaching mode of \"student-oriented, teacher-led\", and realize the perfect integration of information technology and teaching. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey, this paper analyzes the application of information technology in the English flipped classroom of Huizhou secondary schools, and discusses the current situation, problems and solutions of information technology in the English flipped classroom of secondary schools. It is suggested that the flipped classroom based on information technology should be further popularized and applied to improve students' information literacy, enhance teachers' ability to integrate resources, improve classroom teaching effects, and truly play the role of information technology in the flipped classroom.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"139 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133930532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, this review article expounds how to better establish a good evaluation system for English language teaching in the context of COVID-19 as well as for the English language studies and its application in language teaching practices in Chinese universities. Based on a series of literature analysis, the current review article has come to such a conclusion that in the context of COVID-19, the division of stages before, during and after class is relative. Therefore, the methods and means of using the formative evaluation system and the summative evaluation system are not separate and independent. It is because both formative and summative assessment systems are diagnostic in nature. The summative evaluation system has the nature of the formative evaluation system, and no formative evaluation system is an incomplete evaluation system.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114319135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study aims to identify the students' perceptions of Animation in their learning environment in higher learning institutions in Malaysia. The researchers administered an online survey via Google form to a total of 275 undergraduates. Data elicited from the respondents were analyzed using a quantitative research approach. The findings indicated that most of the undergraduates had shown interest in using Animation in their classroom teaching and learning activities due to its effectiveness in facilitating learning. They found animations to be an efficient way to deliver and disseminate information, thus making their education more stimulating besides enhancing their knowledge of computer skills. The respondents further indicated that animation helped them understand a complex concept easily and made their presentations more appealing. Conversely, it was time-consuming for students to create the simplest animation. Besides, too much Animation on the page can be distracting. This study concludes with an overall discussion and recommendations for further study.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121754974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

O’Neill subscribes to Greek mythology but modifies or transforms it in the American scenario. Our study of the plays has considered the way meanings are constructed by a network of cultural and social discourses which embody distinct codes, expectations and assumptions. Besides, the thematic and linguistic similarities and differences between the works of the European and that of the American author selected have enabled the researcher to have an insight into literary influences and affinities. This article has demonstrated that there is no end in the making of texts, as O’Neill has revisited classical literature to write his play, Mourning Becomes Electra. This paper argues that intertextuality must not be limited to influences as Aeschylus had no direct influence on O’Neill though O’Neill rewrites his play The Oresteia. Both writers have no biographical similarities nor do they come from the same generations. O’Neill alludes to Aeschylus’s Greek mythological form of play writing but transforms it into the American scenario, through American Realism. To analyse these plays, the critical approach used was Postmodernism since interetxtuality is the major tenet of postmodernism. The paper concludes that, although O’Neill subscribes to Greek mythology, he deviates from European playwrights of this dramatic convention. His work has aspects of American Realism, and he is equally a social critic who writes about the ills that plague his society, in order to create awareness in his countrymen.","PeriodicalId":384812,"journal":{"name":"Global Academic Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130270734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
