This paper propose a self localization method by using a range sensor. The range sensor can get point clouds. Then, we achieve robust 3D alignment of the point clouds. The iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is famous for 3D alignment, however, in general, before applying the ICP algorithm, point clouds must be registered to roughly correct positions. Therefore, we solve this problem by using exhaustive search. In addition, to reduce computational cost, we use non-extremum suppression and distance field. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we apply for real environment. From the result, the computational time are very fast and alignment accuracy is very good.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133873856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional backpropagation networks require very complex training process before being applied for classification or approximation. Radial basis function networks simplify the training process by the specially organized 3-layer architecture. Counterpropagation networks do not need training process at all and can be designed directly by extracting all the parameters from input data. Both design complexity and generalization ability of the three types of neural network architectures are compared, based on a digit image recognition problem.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116418281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, many head pose and facial expression tracking methods have been developed. However, most of the conventional methods are not designed as communication tools. We therefore propose a new head state tracking method which can be applied to various applications such as avatar's facial expression control. The proposed method optimizes the diffusion parameters found within particle filter which is utilized for tracking via the maximum-likelihood approach. Moreover, we propose an update number function that is utilized for incrementally updating the data set. Although the diffusion parameters vary according to the head motion, accurate tracking with the suitable parameters can be realized.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125073112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the interface paradigm, the human locomotion recognition feeds VE navigation control. An experimental session has been organized in order to acquire acceleration data related to locomotion of 10 healthy subjects (men and women) aging between 23 and 35 years. A treadmill has been used to capture the velocity at which subjects were moving. Our system was designed to optimize classification performances in human locomotion speed recognition in real-time. The recognized human speed locomotion has been shown to enhance users' sensation of presence in the virtual environment. A simple scenario has been developed to assess the system functionality. The experiments carried out show that our system is excellent at classifying a wide range of human locomotion and can be used both in virtual and augmented reality (VR) environments for improved interaction.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129943277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems will open up new possibilities in surgery. Patient safety and acceptance among surgeons are two key issues in this context. We believe that haptic feedback at the console will be an essential feature for both, increased safety and acceptance among surgeons. We aim at giving the surgeon the feeling that he or she is directly operating with his/her own hands on the patient's body. For this, multimodal haptic feedback will be necessary, i.e. the merging of force-feedback, temperature sensing, pressure sensing, and texture rendering, in addition to an ergonomic design of the console itself. We will present some preliminary designs of such systems which are currently being developed in the framework of several projects.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115111549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aim to acquire qualitative and quantitative information on humans by using image-sensing technology for human observation to realize even more advanced human-system interactions. For sensing of human users, it is critical that information be acquired robustly from features available in images and from a prior knowledge model of the human body. We are conducting various research studies with a view to establishing human sensing technology capable of extracting and expressing human features while responding flexibly to the individual differences and fuzziness inherent in humans. In this paper, we describe modeling of human shape and behavior based on combined use of image information and a human body model (Vision-based Human Modeling) and human behavior recognition in video (Vision-based Human Recognition). We demonstrate the application of these results to human-system interaction.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123026808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this method, the position and force information is acquired by bilateral control system. Two kinds of motion information are recorded beforehand. These are called a reference pattern and an input pattern. The reference pattern is data of simple human motion, and the input pattern is data of a sequence of human motion. The input pattern is compared with the reference pattern. Then, it is recognized when the motion of the reference pattern is performed. DP matching is utilized in order to cope with nonlinear expansion and contraction of time. The validity of the proposed method is verified by experiments.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115821876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is achieved by using a large number of sensors attached both to the humans and the environment. Yet, these systems are prone to failure due to the parallel sensing when miss firings occur. We propose a method to test and prevent the miss firings using conditional random fields, since they provide us with a tool that allows us to confirm whether the expected output or activity is likely to happen in the space or not, given the inputs of the system, which are provided by the 4W1H paradigm, that allows us to segment every piece of information in the space into 5 simple variables (Who, When, What, Where and How).","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131946930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can react the human intervention as a function of the robot state and the human action. This platform is suitable for implementing quite complicated action-reaction sequences, like the interaction of human and an animal, e.g. a behavior of an animal companion to the human. The suggested fuzzy model structure built upon the framework of low computational demand Fuzzy Rule Interpolation (FRI) methods and fuzzy automaton. For demonstrating the applicability of the proposed structure, some components of an action-reaction FRI model, will be briefly introduced in this paper.","PeriodicalId":384027,"journal":{"name":"2011 4th International Conference on Human System Interactions, HSI 2011","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117291452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
