However, the development of unconventional gas production in Europe is challenged by several uncertainties related to the technology, reserves, societal and political issues. For a better analysis of the development of unconventional gas, and for better decision support, these uncertainties should be clearly identified. This paper systematically identifies and categorizes the uncertainties challenging the European unconventional gas development, and highlights the causal relations between the uncertainties in order to enhance their understanding. The impacts of the uncertainties discussed in this study on the development can be investigated in detail in future scenario analysis or modeling studies.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132236534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To analyze effects of high shares of fluctuating renewable electricity generation on a European scale, this paper provides a bottom-up approach for modeling hourly electricity output based on meteorological data and technical specifications for different reference plants. Electricity output for wind power is based on hourly data on wind speed, ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure and calculated considering different turbine power curves and hub heights. Calculation accuracy, notably reproduction of intraday characteristics, was significantly improved by assessing and accounting for atmospheric layering. Calculation of electricity generation from solar photovoltaic plants is based on historical hourly data on solar radiation and ambient temperature. The plant output is calculated considering module technology, mounting, module temperature and load dependent array and inverter efficiency.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133775023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assessing performance of regulated utilities requires models capable to account for these different regulatory objectives. Benchmarking analysis has been in use for a long time; however, whether these models should incorporate even quality as an additional regulated output is still a matter of debate. In this paper we study how benchmarking DEA models can be designed to correctly accommodate all regulated variables, including continuity of supply. To this end, we discuss different models to measure technical efficiency, using a comprehensive and balanced panel for 115 electricity distribution Zones, that belong to the largest Italian utility. Our results show that, for our data set, quality significantly affects efficiency scores. We thus claim that the effect of additional regulated outputs should always be tested in benchmarking models.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133565672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the last years there has been an increase of the renewable penetration into the micro-generation which begins to co-exist with the other existing power generation, giving rise to a new type of consumers. This paper develops a methodology to be applied to the management of the all the aggregators. The aggregator establishes bilateral contracts with its clients where the energy purchased and selling conditions are negotiated not only in terms of prices but also for other conditions that allow more flexibility in the way generation and consumption is addressed. The aggregator agent needs a tool to support the decision making in order to compose and select its customers' portfolio in an optimal way, for a given level of profitability and risk.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133960766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To promote the functioning of the chosen market design, the Nordic transmission system operators have seen the improvement of market uniformity as an important goal in their common grid planning (Nordel's grid plans from 2004 and 2008). Market convergence rate is an often used measure that indicates the hours during which the market actually operates as uniform. However, recent evidence suggests that the targeted market convergence has not been achieved. One reason is that the planned grid investments have not been fully realised. In this paper, we study the impacts of reduced market convergence on the Nordic electricity end-users in 2010. For example, results indicate that the costs of neglecting the grid investments have been approximately 200 and 360 million euros for Finnish and Swedish electricity users, respectively. Similar calculations were also done for Norway and Denmark.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133258297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The street lighting sector is one of more consumption and less efficient. In recent years, many countries are promoting action plans to promote the reduction of energy consumption and pollutant gas. This paper analyzes the potential savings from outdoor lighting installations. Also, the different lighting systems and technologies are described, and the measures to be taken for energy savings, increasing the quality of the street light. Finally, a technical-economic solution is raised to renovate inefficient installations, through the incorporation of Energy Service Companies.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125490973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This assessment accounts for the main technical and/or physical limitations to such diversification, namely, ramp and reserve requirements and hydro energy limits, and determines the most economic levels of wind integration and installed hydro capacity for a representative power system. The performance indices used in this assessment as a function of wind penetration are the average daily cost, the degree of wind curtailment, the percent contribution of costly peaking units and the amount of hydro energy usage.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127301145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As an example, in Brazil, illegal connections in distribution networks are responsible for economic losses of about US$ 4.6 billion per year. Nowadays, advances in smart grids create a propitious scenario for the use of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) to design an application that solves this kind of problem. This paper presents a prototype of a low cost power meter for identification of commercial losses in distribution networks. This device uses IED concepts, with data communication to a central processing and analysis system. To demonstrate the applicability in power utilities, it is presented an economic viability and expected payback analysis of the proposed solution. This payback is calculated based on the IEDs costs and expected billing from the illegal connections detected. The developed prototype is under tests and preliminary results are described in the paper.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129036515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this, future potentials of bulk EST in different European countries were estimated and matched with the spatial dispersion of future wind-deployment on country-level to be able to estimate the possible direct benefits of bulk EST implementation to balance the incumbent electricity system. Further on, the contribution of possible future transmission grid expansion for bringing together centers of variable wind generation and flexible generation was analyzed. In this context, an example of transmission expansion is presented: Central Western Europe and Nord Pool, where a cost / benefit analysis of transmission investments based on a welfare maximization approach is conducted. However, both technology options are needed to perfectly operate future European electricity systems with high shares of variable renewable electricity generation.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127788673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latter produces thermal and electric power together and as such reinforces the interaction between the gas and electricity-distribution systems. Thermal storage makes up the key-source of flexibility that allows decoupling the electricity production from the heat demand. However, smart grids focus on electricity, often disregarding the role of gas and thermal storage in overall smart energy systems. We find that the technical impact of a massive introduction of CHP on the gas-distribution network is limited in most cases, even providing opportunities to free up capacity. Taking the consumer's viewpoint, we highlight the economic importance of the thermal storage tank, which requires a thermal capacity of two to three times the hourly thermal power output of the CHP to optimize electric power production and limit thermal losses. Further increasing the storage tank size can increase the gas-distribution capacity that can be marketed by the distribution system operator, but practical constraints in terms of dedicated land area have to be considered as well.","PeriodicalId":383754,"journal":{"name":"2012 9th International Conference on the European Energy Market","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129686813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
