Although the spontaneous recovery rate is high in children, stuttering will become an intractable problem for some of them. In Egypt, it occurs at the Prevalence of 0.290.55%. Stuttering is one of the speech disorders which is characterized by developmental histories often marked by bullying, poor peer relationships, and many negative social interactions. Therefore, it is clear that stuttering carries a significant risk of comorbid psychiatric symptoms; these psychiatric symptoms appear in children and persist into adulthood. The theories behind stuttering and mental health disorders are complex. Aim: The current study aimed to determine comorbid psychiatric symptoms in stutterers. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study was done on fortyseven stutterers. They were classified into three groups: children group: their age ranged 6 9.7 years (7.4 ± 1.3), preadolescents group: their age ranged 10 11.8 years (10.6 ± 0.6) and adolescents group: their age ranged 13.117.2 years (15.1 ± 1.5), who were diagnosed with stuttering. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Arabic Stuttering Severity Instrument (ASSI) were applied to all of them. Results: Comorbid psychiatric symptoms were associated with stuttering. It was found that psychiatric co-morbidities aggravated the stuttering severity. These psychiatric symptoms appeared in children, preadolescents and became more prominent in adolescents. Conclusion: The current study demonstrated stuttering as a heterogeneous group of disorders. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is mandatory for stutterers in addition to the ordinary management program, which includes speech assessment and intervention. On the other hand, CBT should be used as a prophylactic therapy in stutterers without comorbid psychiatric symptoms.","PeriodicalId":37983,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87809320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients and Methods: This experimental prospective study was conducted on 30 patients (10 females and 20 males), aged 18 - 60 years (mean age: 40.6) with benign vocal fold lesions. Auditory perceptual analysis, videolaryngoscopic examination of the larynx, acoustic analysis and Voice handicap index (VHI) were performed for all patients before and after voice therapy. Results: Auditory perceptual assessment and voice handicap index (VHI) done for patients with benign vocal fold lesions before and after voice therapy revealed significant improvement ( p value 0.003 : p value 0.000 respectively). The acoustic parameters for the different group of benign vocal fold lesions pre-therapy in comparison to the acoustic values post voice therapy revealed significant improvement in the fundamental frequency ( p value >0.001 ). Videostroboscopic examination revealed complete recovery in 6 cases of vocal fold nodules, mild improvement of 5 cases of vocal fold polyp with complete cure of one case. There was mild improvement of all cases of vocal fold cysts, contact granuloma and Reinke’s edema without complete cure except for complete cure of two cases of Reinke’s edema. Conclusion: The Accent method of voice therapy may lead to an improvement in the perceived voice quality in some patients with benign vocal fold lesions, and this could make surgical intervention unnecessary.","PeriodicalId":37983,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87040715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Free grafts such as nasal mucoperiosteum, fascia lata, fascia temporalis, and adipose tissue are commonly employed and have satisfactory results. However, free grafts, particularly extra-nasal tissues implanted overlay, are usually not entirely integrated, resulting in excessive nasal crusting and patient discomfort in the postoperative months. We attempted in our study to use Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) membranes in skull base defect reconstruction. Patients and Methods: This prospective controlled study was conducted on 42 patients with spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea who were randomly divided into 2 groups according to the materials used in skull base reconstruction. In group A, the defects were repaired by L-PRF membranes, fascia lata, and mucosal graft while fascia lata and mucosal graft were only used in group B. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the early CSF leak. On the other hand, there was a difference related to the postoperative sinonasal crusting which shows a statistical significance. Conclusion: L-PRF membrane was found to be a good sealing material in the repair of CSF leak as it encourages the healing of surrounding tissues and minimizes sinonasal morbidities such as severe crust formation.","PeriodicalId":37983,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences","volume":"52 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86452212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Background: Fixed orthodontic Appliances can change oral functions regarding chewing, swallowing, dietary habits, and speech during the early stages of orthodontic therapy. Objective: This study aimed to explore the impact of fixed labial orthodontic appliances on speech sound production and the oral phase of swallowing in Arabic-speaking Egyptian children in order to raise the patient’s awareness about the expected outcomes of this line of therapy. Patients and Methods: The study was conducted on 14 children aged 6-18 years of both genders undergoing orthodontic treatment at the Orthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Mansoura University. The study excluded children with extracted teeth, faulty oral habits related to orthodontic deformity, previous orthodontic treatment, cleft palate, neurological disorders, or delayed language development. The patients were subjected to full vocal tract examination and subjective language evaluation. Then bedside swallowing and chewing evaluation of all consistencies and speech sound evaluation were done before fixed labial orthodontic treatment, after one week and after one month. Results: Fixed labial orthodontics affected chewing as regards chewing speed, chewing duration and led to chewing discomfort and chewing sialorrhea. They also caused certain food restrictions and bad mouth odor. Swallowing evaluation parameters revealed a significant increase in the presence of oral residue with solids and semisolids. Fixed labial orthodontics affected anterior fricatives (/s/,/z/,/s/,/z/ and /ʃ,/f/), lingo-alveolars (/t/,/t/,/d/,/d/,/l/ and /n (/and bilabials (/b/ and /m/) but did not reach significance after one week and then starts to improve after one month.
