Linguistic abilities like morphological awareness, semantic and syntactic abilities play a key role in reading development too. The paper aimed to study the extent and properties of morphological aspects and syntactic functioning in relation to reading skills in a group of Egyptian children having poor academic achievement as for designing suitable intervention plans for these children. Patients and Methods: Our study aimed to assess the extent and properties of morphological aspects and syntactic functioning in relation to reading skills in 40 Egyptian Arabic speaking children of the same socioeconomic state and age range from 6 years to 8 years with poor academic performance. The children divided into two groups were subjected to a protocol of assessment applied in Phoniatrics Unit Kasr Al aini Hospital, Arabic Dyslexia Assessment Test and language skills assessment by Receptive Expressive Arabic Language scale- REAL scale were applied. Results: All children with poor scholastic achievement were found to be at risk for developing dyslexia if not suffering from it. They suffered from below average level of performance in receptive, expressive and total language. All language parameters showed significant correlation with rapid naming. Below average morpho-syntactic abilities of children with poor scholastic achievement significantly correlated with tests of attainment (except for spelling) and diagnostic tests (except for bead threading). Conclusion: Our study supports that language disability underlies poor scholastic achievement.","PeriodicalId":37983,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences","volume":"57 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85927030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been usually addressed with batten grafts. In this study, we are describing a simple technique for insertion of alar rim grafts to fix external nasal valve collapse. Patients and Methods: Between January 2018 and October 2020, eighteen patients with alar rim collapse or deformities were addressed using alar rim septal cartilage grafting. Results: All patients who underwent alar rim grafting for external nasal valve collapse were evaluated functionally and aesthetically with post-operative follow up ranging from 12 to 24 month. During which, they showed marked improvement in their nasal airway patency with complete satisfaction for the aesthetic outcome. No complications were encountered. Conclusion: Alar rim grafting is a simple and effective approach to provide support for the external nasal valve and alar contour. In cases of malpositioned lower lateral cartilage, alar flaring, nasal tip deformities, mild retraction, or contour asymmetries, these cartilage grafts showed good outcomes in primary or revision cases.","PeriodicalId":37983,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89690945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Language impairment (LI)is a predominant co-morbidity in pediatrics with psychiatric illnesses and behavioral troubles. In children with LI, one of the common psychiatric disorders is ADHD. However, LI is a common co-morbidity which often could be detected in ADHD children. Although language problems are not among the main symptoms or needed to fulfill current diagnostic criteria of ADHD, most ADHD children have additional defects in language skills. Objective: The main purpose of the current study was to assess language profile in ADHD children at school age and to specify aspects of language defect in comparison with their normal peers. Patients and Methods: 60 children in the school age (6-10 years) of both genders divided in to two groups, case group: 30 children with ADHD and control group: 30 children without ADHD were enrolled in this case control study. Children were assessed by study tests: 1Stanford Binet [fifth edition], 2ADHD Test 3REAL Scale, 4Phonological Awareness Test, 5Rapid Automatized Naming Test. Results: ADHD children were lower than their normal peers in IQ score, language skills, phonological awareness skills, and rapid automatized naming. Regarding aspects of language, they had defects in many skills: receptive and expressive vocabulary, morphosyntax, sentence comprehension, story comprehension, verbal categorization, sentence repetition, and forming sentences.","PeriodicalId":37983,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87607806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stuttering occurs during the process of planning utterances and using sounds to create words and sentences. A significant percentage of stutterers had a history of delayed language development and articulation disorders. This study's purpose was to examine differences between children who stutter (CWS) and child who do not stutter (CWNS) on standardized tests of IQ, language test, and articulatory tests. Patients and Methods: An analytic cross sectional study conducted on two groups of subjects. The study group consisted of 52 children (study group) who stutter (CWS) and control group included 52 children who do not stutter (CWNS). Each child in the study group was audio-recorded, which was subsequently assessed by (Arabic version of stuttering severity index \"A-SSI\") to provide information pertinent to the child's frequency and type of speech dysfluencies. Each child was determined and responded to standardized tests of cognitive, language, and articulatory assessment. Results: There was a significant decrease in receptive, expressive, and total language scores of language test within cases; regards to articulation test, there was a considerable increase of SSDs. These differences in receptive/expressive language and total language scores were significantly correlated with the overall stuttering frequency of cases CWS. Conclusion: Findings were taken to suggest the imbalance among components of the speech-language systems of CWS that may contribute to the difficulties they have establishing usual speech fluency.","PeriodicalId":37983,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Ear, Nose, Throat and Allied Sciences","volume":"78 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85799381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
