Increasing bodies of literature suggest that the varying properties of surface glacier facies differentially influence the melt of the glacier, thus affecting the mass balance. Incorporating these variations into distributed mass balance modelling can improve the perceived accuracy of these models. However, detecting and subsequently mapping these facies with a high degree of accuracy is a necessary precursor to such complex modelling. The variations in the reflectance spectra of various glacier facies permit multiband imagery to exploit band ratios for their effective extraction. However, coarse and medium spatial resolution multispectral imagery can delimit the efficacy of band ratioing by muddling the minor spatial and spectral variations of a glacier. Very high-resolution imagery, on the other hand, creates distortions in the conventionally obtained information extracted through pixel-based classification. Therefore, robust and adaptable methods coupled with higher resolution data products are necessary to effectively map glacier facies. This study endeavours to identify and isolate glacier facies on two unnamed glaciers in the Chandra-Bhaga basin, Himalayas, using an established object-based multi-index protocol. Exploiting the very high resolution offered by WorldView-2 and its eight spectral bands, this study implements customized spectral index ratios via an object-based environment. Pixel-based supervised classification is also performed using three popular classifiers to comparatively gauge the classification accuracies. The object-based multi-index protocol delivered the highest overall accuracy of 86.67%. The Minimum Distance classifier yielded the lowest overall accuracy of 62.50%, whereas, the Mahalanobis Distance and Maximum Likelihood classifiers yielded overall accuracies of 77.50% and 70.84% respectively. The results outline the superiority of the object-based method for extraction of glacier facies. Forthcoming studies must refine the indices and test their applicability in wide ranging scenarios.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46796682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The check-lists include 172 species of lichens and 51 species of vascular plants. Several species rare in Svalbard and in the Arctic were discovered: Candelariella borealis was new to Svalbard. 51 lichen species were newly recorded on Nordaustlandet and 131 lichen species were observed in the Duvefjorden area for the first time. Among lichen species rare in Svalbard and in the Arctic the following can be mentioned: Caloplaca magni-filii, C. nivalis, Lecidea silacea, Phaeophyscia nigricans, Polyblastia gothica, Protothelenella sphinctrinoidella, Rinodina conradii, Stenia geophana, and Tetramelas pulverulentus. Two species of vascular plants, Saxifraga svalbardensis and S. hyperborea, were found new to the Duvefjorden area. The investigated flora is represented mostly by species widespread in Svalbard and in the Arctic. Although Duvefjorden area is situated in the northernmost part of Svalbard, its flora is characterized by relatively high diversity of vascular plants and lichens. Apparently this is due to the influence of the warm North Atlantic Current.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44964848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Samples of mosses were collected in a mountains from the site located above tree line (1420 m a.s.l.), and transferred to Brno, Czech Republic. Then the cluster of moss (23 cm in diameter, 30 cm in depth) including dead parts was placed into open measuring chamber end exposed to local climate for two weeks in autumn 2019. The chamber closed by a transparent lid repeatedly each 20 min and NCER measured by the system. Data on photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), relative air humidity (RH), and moss temperature (T) were recorded as well. Maximum/ minimum dark respiration reached 1.0 and 0.2 mmol (CO2) m-2 s-1. In our study, we used the measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics to follow the development of culture of Antarctic algae (Macrochloris rubrioleum, Zygnema sp.) and cyanobacteria (Hassalia antarctica, Nostoc commune). On the cultures grown on agar plates, Bold´s Basal Medium (BBM), slow Kautsky kinetics supplemented with saturation pulses were measured repeatedly in a week interval. On the kinetics, typical points (OPSMT) were distinguished and species-specific and time of cultivation-dependent differences in shape of the OPSMT kinetics evaluated. We tested sensitivity of various chlorophyll fluorescence parameters to cultivation time on agar plates. In the algae, the most pronounced changes were the decrease in maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (FV/FM) and quenching of basal chlorophyll fluorescence qF0 (M. rubrioleum, Zygnema sp.). In cyanobacteria, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters did not show clear trends with the time of cultivation. F0 quenching (qF0) reached positive values in H. antarctica, while it was negative in N. commune. In both cases, however, qF0 showed an increase with cultivation time. The differences are discussed as well as the potential of the emerging area of the application of chlorophyll fluorescence imaging for evaluation of photosynthetic performance of algal/cyanobacterial cultures on agar plates.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45881941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study showed that the largest proportion of the mat is composed of a brown layer of dead leaves covering the assimilative organs (about 70%). Green leaves and shoots accounted for about 20%, whereas generative organs – for about 10% of the mat mass. The values of the maximum photochemical quantum yield of PS II (FV/FM) in all the studied plants were lower than the optimal values (0.83), which suggests that the plants are exposed to stress factors. The low values of chlorophyll and carotenoid content and relatively high values of the light-harvesting complex (70-80%), the sharp decrease in the quantum yield of PS II (FPSII) entailed by a marginal increase in PPFD indicative of a sufficiently high of photochemical activity within the range of low and medium values of light. It also suggests that Stellaria humifusa is well-adapted to the shaded conditions created in the mat. Besides, a considerable decrease the maximum fluorescence yield of a light-adapted leaf (FM´) at increasing PPFD was observed, which suggests that Stellaria humifusa has a well-developed mechanism of energy dissipation via the non-photochemical (NPQ) pathway. The rapid development of NPQ gives reason to assume that, under high light conditions, non-photochemical quenching is likely to serve as the main mechanism for preventing the photodamage of the photosynthetic apparatus. Thus, it was shown that the photosynthetic apparatus of Stellaria humifusa works efficiently under the conditions created in the mat, and the thick layer of dead leaves covering the assimilative organs, on the one hand, protects them from excessive light, and on the other hand, absorbs thermal energy, which raises temperature of the local habitat.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42044929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were plotted as time series, immediately before and after the PI treatments, then every 20 minutes for three hours (recovery period). FV/FM, ΦPSII and NPQ parameters and quenching components were analysed. Decreasing courses and final values of FV/FM and ΦPSII parameters along with increased values of NPQ clearly indicated PI stress response, although not very severe. Quenching parameters analysis showed a dominant role played by xanthophyll pigments along with changes in PS II in the non-photochemical energy quenching. Dehydration contributed additional value to NPQ. All these factors are consistent with the adaptation of the species to harsh conditions of alpine environments.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47600422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A lot of factors associated with human development may affect nesting birds. The human-subsidized predation is considered to be the most significant. Anthropogenic food sources are usually present in human-transformed habitats, as well as additional dens and perch sites. This leads to a higher press of predation. In Sabetta, there are specific conditions causing artificially-limited predation and human-induced disturbance. Finding a large number of nests in close proximity to industrial infrastructure we have suggested that waders (order Charadriiformes) and passerine (order Passeriformes) birds may be tolerant to an urbanized landscape. In the studied industrial habitat, they probably do not reduce the nesting density, thanks to particular advantages of such habitats (drainability and variety of shelters). To test this hypothesis, we performed an analysis of the relationship between the nesting density of the 8 most abundant species of waders and passerines in relation to the degree of habitat transformation. Statistical analysis was carried out using the GLM module of Statsoft Statistica 10. We found a positive relation between nesting density of the Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) and Snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) and the degree of transformation. Habitat transformation did not significantly affect the White wagtail (Motacilla alba) and Red-throated pipit (Anthus cervinus). The Lapland longspur (Calcarius lapponicus) showed a clear decrease of the nest density in transformed habitats. Last but not least, the Little stint (Calidris minuta), Temminck’s stint (C. temminckii) and Red-necked phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) completely ignored only artificial habitats, whereas in partially transformed habitats, their mean nesting density was similar to undisturbed natural areas.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48607876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its photosynthetic activity was monitored ex situ in a microcosm in late Arctic summer in 2016 and 2017 using variable chlorophyll fluorescence measurements with blue and red excitation lights. The effective quantum yield (FPSII) was measured, and the photosynthetic relative electron transport rate (rETR) was calculated. During the measurement period, the microclimate data, air temperature and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), were recorded as well. Year 2016 was slightly warmer than year 2017. Despite of higher maximum PAR values found in 2016, the mean irradiance reached higher values in 2017 than 2016. When using red light excitation, the rETR and effective quantum yield values were lower than those measured using blue excitation light in 2016. However, opposite results were recorded in 2017, indicating thus rather sample-specific differences. According to redundancy analysis, the PAR was confirmed as the main driver of photosynthesis in late Arctic summer in both years. No serious photoinhibition, expressed as serious systematic decline of the rETR, was observed in both years indicating rapid photoacclimation of Vaucheria sp. photosynthesis to changing light environment. The air temperature was found to be less important driver of the photosynthetic activity. The inter-annual comparisons showed increased photosynthetic activity in 2017, probably caused by higher PAR in 2017, by differences in microcosmos design and/or heterogeneity of samples.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45045666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The density of 500 and 900 kg·m–3 adopted for snow in the accumulation area and ice in the ablation area, respectively, provides lower mass balance values that better fit to the glaciological records from glaciers on Vega Island and South Shetland Islands. The difference between the cumulative surface mass balance values based on constant (1.23 ± 0.44 m w.e.) and zonally-variable density (0.57 ± 0.67 m w.e.) is higher for Whisky Glacier where a total mass gain was observed over the period 2009–2015. The cumulative surface mass balance values are 0.46 ± 0.36 and 0.11 ± 0.37 m w.e. for Davies Dome, which experienced lower mass gain over the same period. The conversion approach does not affect much the spatial distribution of surface mass balance on glaciers, equilibrium line altitude and accumulation-area ratio. The pattern of the surface mass balance is almost identical in the ablation zone and very similar in the accumulation zone, where the constant conversion factor yields higher surface mass balance values. The equilibrium line altitude and accumulation-area ratio determined for the investigated glaciers differ by less than 2m and 0.01, respectively. The annual changes of equilibrium line altitude and the mean values determined over the period 2009–2015 for Whisky Glacier (311 ± 16 m a.s.l.) and Davies Dome (393 ± 18 m a.s.l.) coincide with the values reported from Bahía del Diablo Glacier on Vega Island but differ from the glaciological records on South Shetland Islands.","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46500002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lichens and mosses from these regions, similarly to high altitude alpine locations, have evolved physiological adaptations to perform photosynthesis at subzero temperatures. In this study we applied linear cooling technique in order to analyze interspecific differences in primary photosynthetic processes in Antarctic species affected by low and subzero temperature stress. We exposed Sanionia uncinata, Rhizoplaca aspidophora, Ochrolechia frigida, Cladonia sp., Himantormia lugubris and Umbilicaria decussata to the cooling from 20 to -35°C at a constant rate of 2°C min-1. Fluorometric parameters were measured during the cooling experiments: FV/FM - potential yield of photosynthetic processes in photosystem II, and F0 - minimal chlorophyll fluorescence. All the species showed S-curves for FV/FM in response to decreasing temperature and interspecific differences in the parameters of S-curve equation. Critical temperature for FV/FM was found -35°C for U. decussata, while the other species ranged between -16 to -20°C. The changes of F0 with thallus temperature decrease were species-specific. F0 decrease followed by an increase was found with cooling from 20 to -20°C, and from -20 to -35°C, respectively, in the majority of cases. These results suggest that the experimental moss and lichen species from Antarctica have a high resistance to freezing temperatures. The underlying physiological mechanisms are constitutive features of Antarctic lichens and mosses. They are a crucial part of the adaptation and short-term acclimatory changes in ecophysiological performance of the organisms in harsh polar environments. ","PeriodicalId":37981,"journal":{"name":"Czech Polar Reports","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43130072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
