It is well-known that contact diameter, contact material, and magnetic field have a significant influence on high-current anode phenomena formation. However, an opening displacement characteristic of movable contact is another contribution for an anode spot formation. The objective of this paper is to propose an opening displacement characteristic for a vacuum interrupter to avoid a formation of high-current anode phenomena. The anode phenomena were observed by using high speed CCD camera. The vacuum interrupters were used in the experiments, which had a glass envelope and there was no stainless shield installed. The diameters of butt type contacts were 12 mm and 25 mm, respectively. The average opening velocities during 10ms after contacts separated were ranged from 1.1m/s to 2.0m/s. And arcing time was adjusted from 2ms to 10ms with a fixed velocity and peak arc current. The results showed that in an anode diagram for each vacuum interrupter, an arcing curve can be obtained, which avoids the regions of intense arc mode and anode spot mode. And this arcing curve corresponds to an opening displacement curve of vacuum interrupter. By simulating, influences of gas flow on arc during the arc extinguishing process of the two type nozzles have been researched using finite volume method (FVM). Arc extinction performance has been judged by comparison temperature, pressure and velocity vector of blade nozzle under different opening load. And the variation regular of energy is acquired by analyzing the maximum sections energy. In direct response to demands of more reliable GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) from customers, computer simulations such as dynamics, structural, and fluid dynamics analysis are becoming more incorporated into the design process. Among the many types of simulations in GIS are low current interruption, SLF interruption, and BTF interruption. In the simulations, a stroke profile measured under loaded condition is required, and it leads to reduction in time and cost required towards the product development. In the paper, first, the actuator and interrupter of GIS is modeled using dynamics simulation program called RecurDyn. Second, SF6 gas pressure change in the interrupting chamber is made into a sub-routine using house code. Puffer circuit breaker model which is detachable was regarded as study object in this paper. A method called thermal flow rate detecting technique is proposed to detect the airspeed in arc quenching chamber in this paper and a hot-wire airflow sensor which has advantages of low-cost, low power consumption and rapid thermal response time is designed. Computer processing technology is used to specify the speed of fluid by establishing mathematical model based on sensing mechanism of the transducer in a constant temperature operation mode. In this investigation, a on-load SF6 interrupter pressure measurement method was established with piezoresistive pressure transducer and insulating-tube. The pressures in the puffer cylinder, at the upstream, throat and downstream of nozzle have been measured. The difference of gas blowing characteristics between N2 and SF6 has been pointed out. The insulating-tube can effectively protect the pressure transducer from the high voltage and high temperature during on-load interrupting. In order to accelerate the arc quenching, one of the most common methods is to enhance the gas flow through adding gas material in arc chamber currently. Meanwhile, in the recent research, it has been found that improving the flow field through optimum structural design of arc chamber is another effective way, especially in the recent market trend that the low voltage switching devices are getting more and more small size. In this paper, with the CFD software of Fluent, the model of arc chamber which is from a type of auto transfer switch equipment and the magneto-hydrodynamic model of the arc were established. The distribution of the flow field in arc chamber during arc igniting was calculated. On the basis of analyzing the flow field, an optimum arc chamber was proposed. In the meantime, experimental investigations on the former and the optimum arc chambers were carried out under the same conditions. The arc current and arc voltage were measured. The arc motion process and back commutation phenomenon captured with the high-speed camera were observed. First dimensioning and optimization are possible and lead to a reduction of the tests. With appropriate hypothesis, today commercial softwares are perfectly relevant, typically for the dielectric, thermal and mechanical calculations. The electromagnetic, fluid and breaking process simulations are more complex since precise phenomena have to be considered and can be partially defined. Particular criteria can be used to predict the success or failure of the real test. To be more and more fitted to tests, these tools are still being developed and particular validation steps are required. Through comparing several existing temperature measurement methods for monitoring temperature rising elevation at bus-bas, a new design of temperature monitoring method is proposed. It adopts quick-magnetic saturated current transformer, temperature sensor and infrared transmission to solve the problem of high voltage isolation. For switchgear insulation characteristic monitoring, using the micro-controller unit (MCU) and hardware design, an on-line dielectric loss angle and leakage current measuring method with low cost and high accuracy is implemented. Sensor and signal conditioning circuit design are adopted to ensure the accuracy of leakage current measurement. The frequency voltage signal is extracted by connecting voltage-dividing capacitor on capacitive device terminal and absolute method of measurement and zero-crossing comparison measurement is adapted to measure dielectric loss angle whose principle and calculation approach are presented in this paper. The leakage current and dielectric loss angle can be regarded as criterion to assess switchgear insulation characteristic. Because the monitoring system works in several electromagnetic interference environments, some hardware and software electromagnetic immunity measures are discussed. Verification of performance of thyristor valves particularly designed for HVDC project plays an important role in the handover of products between the manufacturer and the client [1]. Conventional test facilities based on philosophy of direct test cannot meet the requirements for modern thyristor valves. New test facilities with high ratings are necessarily built based on philosophy of synthetic test. Over the conventional direct test circuit, the later is an economical and feasible solution with less financial investment and higher test capability. However, the equivalency between the synthetic test and the direct test should be analyzed technically in order to make sure that the condition of verification test in a synthetic test circuit should satisfy the actual operation condition of thyristor valves existing in a real HVDC project, just as in a direct test circuit. Equivalency analysis is focused in this paper, covering the scope of thyristor valves' steady state, and transient state. On the basis of the results achieved, a synthetic test circuit of 6500A/50kV for operational tests of thyristor valves used for up to ±800kV HVDC project has newly been set up and already put into service in xi'an high voltage apparatus research institute (XIHARI), China.
