The SiC has some superior physical properties when compared with the conventional silicon, and is expected to operate with lower on-resistance and under higher temperature. Furthermore the SiC device has higher thermal conductivity and then has the prominent feature of heat dissipation. Among many expected applications of SiC, this paper presents the application to the power supply system for the information and communication system such as a data center. Firstly, the development of a high power-density technology for a 5-kW isolated DC-DC converter using a hybrid-pair of Si-MOSFET and SiC-SBD is reported. Secondly, a new type DC circuit breaker using SiC-SIT is introduced.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127985887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system permits direct measurement of arc light emission images with a capture rate of 1 million images per second (1MHz), and 8 bit intensity resolution. Novel software techniques are reported to visualise the arc motion and to measure arc trajectories. Results are presented on high current (2kA) discharge events where the electrode and arc runner surfaces are investigated using optical surface scanning methods; such that the position of the arc roots on the runner can be correlated to the measured trajectories. The results show evidence of the cathode arc root stepping along the arc runners.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"470 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133246970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate the partial discharge along an insulator surface in vacuum under AC voltage application by the measurement of the charging and the light emission. Under sudden AC high voltage application, the partial discharge along the alumina surface occurred at the peak voltage of both polarities, but mainly at the negative polarity. The partial discharge was initiated near the rod electrode and spread out over the whole alumina surface. The partial discharge and subsequent charging behavior on the alumina surface under AC voltage application was verified to be dominated by the distortion of electric field due to not only the negative charges on the alumina surface but also the decrease phase of applied AC voltage.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127122300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment was performed on a cup-type TMF contact with a contact diameter of 66mm and a contact gap of 4mm in single-frequency circuit. With high-speed photography, three different arc modes were identified: arc column expansion, arc column movement and diffuse arc. At the arc column expansion mode, the arc column is immobility and the diameter of arc column increases with the increasing current. At the arc column movement mode, arc velocity between 10m/s – 100m/s was observed. The arc column expansion mode plays an important role in the anode erosion in the intermediate-frequency vacuum arc. Furthermore, the arc velocity increases almost linearly with the total current at the same frequency. As the current frequency increase, the arc velocity also increases at the same current.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"278 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114482339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At present, nonlinear resistance model based on static V-I characteristics is used for metal-oxide surge arrester (MOA) when simulating the VFTO in GIS. But the result is not accurately, because polarization in high frequency electric field is neglected by this model. In this paper, combined with the conductive process of grain and grain boundary in the microstructure of arrester valve piece, based on the polarization theory in alternating electric field, the high frequency circuit model of arrester is proposed, and the model can accurately simulate polarization process of arrester in high frequency electric field by comparing the simulation and the actual waveform. Then based on a GIS in China, the VFTO is simulated with the high frequency model, and the effect of MOA on VFTO amplitude, spectrum characteristics and gradient are analyzed. The simulation results show that, MOA has some inhibitory effect on the amplitude and steepness of VFTO, especially for the equipments that nearing the arrester. In addition, the nearer equipment from the arcing disconnector, the greater steepness on it, conversely, the farther from the disconnector, the steepness is lower. The result has some practical significance for calculating and analyzing VFTO.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133029400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the viable solutions for handling this issue is the use of fault current limiters (FCL) to reduce the short circuit current. FCLs can be classified in three groups: passive, solid-state and hybrid FCLs. Passive FCLs have merit to inherently react on a fault, requiring no fault detection and triggering circuit. Inductive FCLs based on core saturation belong to this group. In this paper, magnetic flux density distribution in inductive saturable core FCL has been obtained before and after fault using a multiphysics simulation tool (COMSOL) and ψ-I curve has been obtained for steel-1008 core with COMSOL and Matlab. FCL effects on circuit have been analyzed in EMTP and it has been observed that the fault current will decrease significantly.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"432 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133648342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the vacuum level measured by the manufacturer is the most accurate, its level is set as the base value. Then an increment of shift should be found: it is the x-axis difference value between the general calibration curve and the value measured when this vacuum interrupter leaves factory. After which, an idiographic calibration curve can be obtained by shifting the general calibration curve on x-axis by the increment. Thus, a self-calibration method is realized, which leads to an improvement of measurement accuracy. In this paper, the shifting of curves is realized by two kinds of methods: direct increment and curve fitting. This self-calibration method can be applied to various vacuum level measuring systems of vacuum interrupters.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127864697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using high speed CCD camera the arc movements are observed and the influence of resistor of arc runners is analyzed. According to experiment results of the arc motion between parallel poles, for the certain configuration the increase of the pole resistance can reduce the speed of arc motion. However, with the increase of the current, this effect fades gradually. A simplified mathematical model is proposed to explain the reason for the resistance of the arc runner delays arc motion. Without considering the fluid characteristic of the arc, further work may be done to analyze the phenomena that with the higher current, the arc delay effect of resistance fades.","PeriodicalId":379448,"journal":{"name":"2011 1st International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology","volume":"11 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134621588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
