The increasing health burden and mental diseases pose the need for investigating other potential medications. The present review focuses on psychedelic medications. The Patient/Participant, Intervention, Outcomes, and Studies ([PICOS) protocol and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) checklist guided the establishment of the inclusion criteria. Two reviewers sought eligible studies in electronic databases, including ProQuest, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. A total of 17 articles met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed for the potential therapeutic effects of psychedelics, including 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and psilocybin, in the management of psychiatric illnesses. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the level of certainty of evidence. Psychedelics’ positive therapeutic effects were reported across the 17 articles. The medications provided relief from psychotic experiences, reduced the severity of depression and anxiety, improved PSTD, improved social cognition, and elevated the mood of the participants. However, adverse effects, including increased irritability, insomnia, rumination, and low mood, were reported and posed the need for patient monitoring. Despite the long-term therapeutic benefits, psychedelics produced adverse effects when used to manage psychiatric illnesses. LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin are emerging as potential medications that could improve the overall quality of life, life satisfaction, and well-being of mentally ill patients. Keywords: Psychiatric illness, psychedelics, MDMA, LSD, psilocybin treatment, depressive symptoms, disease severity, and therapeutic outcomes.","PeriodicalId":379362,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sociology, Psychology & Religious Studies","volume":"2018 42","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135636486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increasing incidence implicates health burdens and clinical dilemmas regarding the low efficacy of the existing antidepressants. A literature search was performed on electronic databases, PubMed, the Cochrane Library of Randomized Trials, Scopus, and ProQuest, for studies reporting the efficacy of an SNRI (Desvenlafaxine 50 mg/d), a serotonin modulator (Vortioxetine 10-20 mg/d), and an aminoketone antidepressant (Bupropion). Study selection focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies. All statistical analyses and visualization were performed using the Review Manager (RevMan) software and Python programming. The random effects model, ANOVA test, and Cohen’s d were used for statistical analyses. The present meta-analysis involved 17 studies, including 11, 533 participants. The results aligned with previous studies and accounts provided by literature regarding the efficacy of antidepressants used to manage MDD. Five studies, including 2, 377 MDD patients, reported a statistically significant outcome, that Desvenlafaxine 50 mg/d reduced MDD’s severity than placebo (OR: 0.52, 95% CI [0.44, 0.62], P < 0.00001, I2 = 0%). Three studies involving 742 MDD patients reported the efficacy of dextromethorphan-bupropion (AXS-50). The reduction of MADRS scores in the treatment group was statistically insignificant, with high variability, favouring the placebo (OR of 1.85 [95% CI: 0.93, 3.70], p = 0.08, I2 = 79%). Additionally, Vortioxetine 10-20 mg/d produced adverse effects, headache, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, nasopharyngitis, somnolence, and suicidal ideation among 6, 669 MDD patients reported by the 9 studies. The finding was statistically significant but with a high variability OR: 15.25, 95% CI [12.55, 18.52], P < 0.00001, I2 = 98%). A preliminary analysis of evidence collected following Desvenlafaxine, AXS-50, and Vortioxetine administration yielded compelling evidence on the efficacy of antidepressants in MDD treatment. Desvenlafaxine and AXS-50 reported reduced severity and symptomatology in MDD, respectively. On the other hand, Vortioxetine implicated adverse effects, which are common with most antidepressants. Despite adverse effects like headache, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, nasopharyngitis, somnolence, and suicidal ideation, antidepressants used to treat MDD yield clinically satisfying outcomes like decreased severity of depression and relief from symptoms. Clinicians should monitor patients to take care of any adverse effects resulting from the treatments. Keywords: Antidepressant efficacy, adverse effects, major depressive disorder, MDD symptomatology, severity, improved outcomes.","PeriodicalId":379362,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sociology, Psychology & Religious Studies","volume":"2015 17","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135635507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This polarization is reflected in heated debates over issues such as gun control, immigration, and climate change, leading to a lack of constructive dialogue and an erosion of empathy and understanding. The intense polarization has created a fragmented society, hindering progress and unity, and highlighting the urgent need for bridge-building and fostering a sense of common purpose. Studies have shown that during election cycles, voters become more polarized and adopt more extreme positions as political campaigns focus on divisive issues and employ aggressive tactics. The high-stakes nature of Florida's political environment further deepens polarization among voters. Studies have found that individuals residing in urban and rural regions often hold contrasting views on issues such as gun control, immigration, and environmental policies, contributing to the polarization of society. The study concluded that addressing extreme polarization in Florida's society requires a multi-faceted approach. These can be achieved by encouraging open and respectful dialogue, promoting media literacy, and fostering platforms for diverse perspectives which will help in counteracting the echo-chamber effect and promote understanding. Bridging the urban-rural divide through initiatives that address common challenges and promote mutual cooperation can also foster unity and reduce polarization. Promoting civic engagement, supporting inclusive policies, and addressing socioeconomic disparities can help alleviate the divisions contributing to extreme polarization. The study recommended that by encouraging spaces for civil discourse and promoting platforms that facilitate conversations between individuals with different viewpoints can help bridge ideological gaps. Encouraging individuals to participate in community activities, volunteer work, and political processes can help create a sense of shared responsibility and common purpose. Recognizing the prevalence of GBV in various forms across the country, the research addressed the underlying social norms, practices, and cultural narratives that perpetuate this issue. Employing a mixed-method approach, the investigation included both qualitative and quantitative data, collecting insights through surveys, interviews, and case studies across different regions in India. The research problem revolved around understanding how deep-rooted cultural dynamics, such as caste systems, religious beliefs, and traditional gender roles, contribute to the persistence and acceptance of GBV. The methodology adopted was designed to offer a comprehensive overview of these complex interactions. Surveys measured the prevalence and attitudes towards GBV, while interviews with survivors, activists, and community leaders provided a deeper understanding of the lived experiences and societal pressures that influence GBV. Findings indicated that GBV in India is a multifaceted problem with roots in historical, cultural, and structural inequalities. There was a clear link between societal norms and the incidence of violence, with certain practices such as dowry and child marriage identified as significant contributors. Additionally, the study found that there is often a gap between existing laws and their implementation, further exacerbating the issue. The conclusion drawn emphasized that GBV in India cannot be viewed in isolation from its socio-cultural context. While legislation and policy efforts exist, they must be strengthened and coupled with societal change for effectiveness. Recommendations include the need for comprehensive educational programs to challenge and change harmful cultural norms, improved legal frameworks, and enforcement mechanisms, as well as increased support systems for survivors. The study advocates for a collaborative approach involving government, civil society, and local communities to address the root causes of GBV and promote gender equality. The specific objectives of this research were to evaluate the effect of income status on the occurrence of patients' depression, to assess the effect of educational status on the occurrence of patients' depression, and to examine the relationship between employment status and patients' depression at Gisenyi District Hospital, Rwanda. The study utilized descriptive-cross-sectional and correlational research methodologies, employing quantitative research techniques. Data were collected from 156 respondents in their homes via self-administered questionnaire. The study revealed consistent experiences of depressive symptoms associated with income status, with mean values ranging from 4.8312 to 4.870 and moderate standard deviations ranging from 0.467 to 0.63457. Strong positive correlations (r=0.775 to r=0.807) further emphasized the pronounced relationship between income status and various dimensions of depression, highlighting the vulnerability of patients with lower income levels. Similarly, the analysis on educational status demonstrated psychological challenges linked to educational backgrounds, supported by high mean values (ranging from 4.844 to 4.870) and relatively narrow standard deviations (ranging from 0.481 to 0.573). The significant Pearson correlation coefficients (r=0.693 to r=0.894) emphasized the substantial association between poor educational status and different aspects of depression, underlining the impact of educational experiences on emotional well-being. Furthermore, the investigation on employment status uncovered significant challenges related to employment, supported by high mean scores (ranging from 4.824 to 4.863) and narrow standard deviations (ranging from 0.485 to 0.584). Strong positive correlations (r=0.743 to r=0.827) underscored the potential influence of employment conditions on the emotional well-being of the patients. The study underscores the impact of socio-economic factors on depression in Gisenyi District Hospital patients. Recommendations include implementing socioeconomic support programs, integrating comprehensive mental health services, facilitating patient engagement, providing specialized healthcare training, and promoting mental health awareness to mitigate stigma and improve mental well-being. Social media is an online platform that people use to build social networks or social connections with other individuals with similar personal or career interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life relations. Thus, the study sought to examine the effect of social media on social behavior among the youth in California, USA. The study was literature-based. The study's findings were based on the results from the prior studies. The study results showed that social media influences the social behavior of youth. Social media platforms enable individuals to have conversations, share information and develop internet content. The speed of the internet has changed the way people receive information. The research concluded that as modern technology increased, online social networking had become the routine for every individual. Online networking has broadened the quality and rate of coordinated initiatives for various people. Social media plays an essential duty in influencing culture, economy, and overall view of the world, so users should be mindful of its positive impact. Youth are connected with social media daily. The benefits of social media are more highlighted regularly instead of its negative elements, which are very hardly ever discussed. The study suggested that social media may increase or widen our knowledge and enhance the professional connection between the youth. The study recommended that people be educated on exactly how to handle their privacy settings, warning them concerning what details they include in social media posts, including what is in their photos, urging that they do not connect with anyone online unless they understand them in real life already.
