Nevertheless, there are a few low-cost options to monitor soil moisture. Moreover, those options depend on the specific characteristics of the soil. In this paper, we attempt to find a sensor, based on mutual inductance, that could be used for more than one sort of soil. We study three prototypes, one of them with casing. The sensors are powered with a voltage of 10 peak to peak volts. One of the soils has a high content of organic matter and sand while the other is rich in sand and silt. The best prototype for the soil with high levels of organic matter has 10 turns on the powered coil and 5 on the induced coil. The best frequency for this sensor is 1340 kHz. For the soil with a significant quantity of silt, the best prototype has 80 turns on the powered coil and 40 on the induced coil. The frequency at which this sensor works best is 229 kHz, which happens to be its peak frequency. With those characteristics regressions lines with R2 values higher than 0.75 can be modeled.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133779820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data of remote sensing techniques using spectral and thermal approaches have been proposed as potential indicators to allowing rapid identification of crop nitrogen status, water stress and plants diseases across large areas. Given their versatility, remote sensing techniques have become valuable tools for precision agriculture, allowing to farmers to practice a more sustainable agriculture, minimizing risks of losing the harvest by providing the resources (water irrigation and fertilizer) needed to secure yield. Here, we review some remote sensing strategies and techniques used for a smart crop management and we discuss the useful of internet and computing programs to analyze the data of these techniques for precision agriculture. Nowadays, the use of software programs is an essential tool for the process and interpretation of data derived from remote sensing technologies, permitting a rapid and accurate farmer’s decisions to improved crop production and farmers’ incomes.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129958094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blockchain and its related approaches provide decentralized security and privacy, however yet they involve significant energy, delay, and computational overhead. The aforementioned costs are not feasible for most resource-constrained IoT devices. The proposed security models of this paper acknowledged these drawbacks by circumventing the computational resource-intensive Proof of Work (PoW) concepts. The models consist of three main components: Customized Digital Certificate (CC), Validator (Smart Contract), and Storage (Blockchain Network). A set of new algorithms are proposed to outline various phases during communication and embedding message security. The proposed models are evaluated in a simulated environment for secure data communication between Flights and ACTs. Each ACT and Flight need to be equipped with IoT devices and Validator (SC) that can send and receive validated messages and stored in the Blockchain network at both ends. This paper explores the communication realm and outlines Cryptography and Blockchain-based approaches. Extensive empirical work has been done to demonstrate that the proposed models are viable with respect to confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The presented models can be further utilized for tracing of message exchange for integrity and non-repudiation.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130661400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many benefits such as decentralization, persistency and security. A blockchain network can be public or private. Among them, the private blockchain model is applied to the business model. It can be a consortium of networks and is efficiently handled using smart contracts. However, there are many problems in applying the blockchain technology to various environments. One of the concerns is that it does not provide enough performance for many transactions [1]. This paper focuses on improving the performance of Hyperledger Fabric which is reported to be the fastest private blockchain platform [2].Fabric has various component such as chaincode(smart-contract), endorsing peer, ordering service and committing peer. We propose two optimization method about endorsing peer and ordering service. Firstly, we have improved the procedure of read transactions by distinguishing between read and write transactions in the endorsement phase. We achieved 60% better performance than original read transaction processing. Secondly, we create a new consensus protocol without using an external project. We decreased latency by 80% through ordering service optimization. By combining two optimizations, we improved the overall latency and throughput performance by 20%.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116524811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It brought to life concepts such as smart cities, which could not have been realized using classic computing technologies. While domains like health, manufacturing, and agriculture have gained greatly from the introduction of internet-connected, low-cost smart monitoring and control devices, the energy sector remains the most significant application of IoT technologies. The most recent works on smart energy systems focus on the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. While renewable energy has been a key topic of research for decades, its adoption at large scale has been hindered by reliability and intermittency issues. Internet of Things can provide solutions to overcome such issues and enable grid integration by providing means for remote and real-time monitoring and performance analysis of solar facilities. This paper presents smart solar energy systems as an IoT application and derives primary system requirements of IoT middleware required for building efficient, scalable, and reliable grid-integrated large-scale and distributed smart solar farms.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129368722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several works explain how the Internet of things (IoT) will have an impact on almost all aspects of our life and why security is at the top of the list of IoT challenges. Constrained nodes constitute a significant portion of devices in IoT. These nodes are characterized by severe constraints on power, memory, and processing resources, therefore, do not support conventional security protocols such as Transport Layer Security (TLS). Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is a lightweight communication protocol particularly adapted for constrained nodes. Security solution, in MQTT protocol, can be achieved in multiple layers. To ensure end-to-end encryption, Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data (AEAD) is one of the most recommended solutions. Actually, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is one of the most widely used standard encryption methods. However, constrained nodes processors did not have hardware support for AES and the physical-layer packet size of these nodes is limited. This paper proposes ChaCha20-Po1y1305 AEAD as a solution to secure constrained nodes communication over MQTT/MQTT-SN. ChaCha20 and Poly1305 are respectively lightweight stream cipher and one-time authenticator which continue gain popularity from crypto community. A prototype of the proposed solution is implemented on constrained nodes like Arduino UNO. The paper mainly provides results related to memory footprint and execution time. These results indicate that the proposed scheme requires small amount of memory and present low processing time.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"405 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124711563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Big data volume of those streams is a significant burden or overhead not only to the transportation network, but also to the corresponding application servers. Therefore, researchers and scientists focus on reducing the amount of data needed to be transferred via data compressions and approximations. However, how to do data compression and approximation is highly dependent on the corresponding applications. In this paper, we did a study on the impact of data approximation to the machine learning applications. In particular, from the experimental perspective, we show the tradeoff among the approximation error bound, compression ratio and the prediction accuracy of multiple machine learning methods. We believe that, with proper choice, data approximation can dramatically reduce the amount of data transferred with limited impact on the machine learning applications.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125114013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A precise knowledge of the position of the detector elements is required for the accurate reconstruction of the signature of the particles crossing the instrumented volume. For this an acoustic positioning system has been developed. The detectors of the telescope will consist of several hundreds detection units - vertical mooring lines with optical sensor modules attached. For accurate positioning, each module contains an acoustic piezo-electric receiver, while acoustic transponders are located at the sea bottom. To determine the performance of this positioning system a simulation study was performed. The results of the study are applied to the first detector units installed offshore the coast of Toulon, France. A preliminary estimation of the expected positioning uncertainty is found to be within specification.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127157966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some of the major concerns in this new scenario are the security and privacy issues required for a full technology adoption. Traffic characterization is a compound of strategies intended to define formally the behaviour and patterns in the Internet traffic.In this work, we propose the use of statistical features of network flows to characterize some of the most common attacks in the current networks through the L-moment ratio diagrams. Our work identify the parameters that can discriminate normal from malicious traffic. Moreover, our preliminary results show that this technique enables the differentiation of anomalies and can also identify several types of attack traffic.","PeriodicalId":379304,"journal":{"name":"2019 Sixth International Conference on Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IOTSMS)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115842545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
