Dolphin robots should turn towards people who want to interact with them, while swimming autonomously. A pair of left and right microphones is located to form the binaural ears of a dolphin robot. Since the magnitudes of the measured microphone signals decrease as the difference between directions of the microphone and sounds increases, the magnitudes of the left and right signals of microphones are compared to find the sound direction relative to the robotpsilas body line. The same rule applies to the second pair of microphones to determine the sound direction relative to the front.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125735262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Minimum noise figure and maximum gain are two goals that cannot be reached simultaneously. In our particular case the problem consists of the fact that the source is a radiating element, e.g. a bow-tie radiator. All influences in the near field of this element cause a change to the source impedance. Thus, we have to avoid such influences during measurements and this was accomplished by our application of a far field method as described below.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121117277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a bandwidth efficient scheme to increase the number of users in a fixed bandwidth for mobile communication. One of the efficient schemes to overload a CDMA system is to use two sets of orthogonal signal waveforms (O/O). The first set is assigned to the N users and the second set is assigned to the additional M users. An iterative soft decision interference cancellation receiver (SDIC) scheme is used to cancel interference between the two sets of users. In this paper, the BER performance of a new overloading scheme using orthogonal Gold code sets (OG/OG) is evaluated with SDIC receiver on a Rayleigh fading channel. It is observed that this scheme provides the channel overloading of 40% at a BER of 0.0005, with an SNR degradation of about 1 dB as compared to single user performance on a Rayleigh fading channel. An improved overloading scheme is also proposed, which gives 100% channel overloading on Rayleigh fading channel with near single user performance.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126604692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By estimating the symbol error position and compensating for the symbol error using MSDD outputs, it can improve the receive performance of T-DMB system. Also by providing soft-outputs to Viterbi decoder, an additional coding gain can be obtained. Simulation results in the typical urban (TU) channel show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the conventional differential detection (DD) and hard decision based MSDD T-DMB receivers.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129199779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed source coding has emerged as an enabling technology for sensor networks. It refers to the compression of correlated signals captured by different sensors which do not communicate between themselves. Distributed source coding finds its foundation in the seminal work of Slepian-Wolf (1973) and Wyner-Ziv (1976). The proof of the Slepian-Wolf W theorem is based on random binning, which is non-constructive, i.e., it does not reveal how practical code design should be done. In 1974, Wyner suggested the use of parity check codes to approach the corner points of the Slepian-Wolf rate region. It is only recently that practical solutions based on channel capacity-achieving codes (block codes, turbo codes or LDPC codes) have been explored for applications ranging from video compression, resilient video transmission, to minimization of transmit energy in sensor networks. Video compression, as well as scalable video compression, can be recast into a distributed source coding framework leading to distributed video coding schemes targeting mainly low coding complexity and error resilience functionalities. Correlated samples (pixels or transform coefficients) from different frames are regarded as outputs of different sensors. However, the application of the Wyner-Ziv principles to video compression is not straightforward and requires solving a number of issues. This article presents the underlying theory, the latest developments of distributed video compression and some of the research trends in the area.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130356952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a powerful technique that uses an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) at the transmitter to modulate a high bit-rate signal onto a number of carriers. The problem with this technique is that it is inherently inflexible and requires a complex IFFT core. This paper provides an analysis of a new technique that will offer an alternative to OFDM called Orthogonal Wavelet Division Multiplex that has a lower computational complexity and increased flexibility. However, larger numbers of users creates problems with greater network traffic, interoperability and proprietary protocol dependence. Network traffic due to presence information being exchanged between users and servers needs to be considered, but is it possible to estimate or measure this traffic? There have been very few studies performed on the impact of presence traffic. The purpose of this research is to implement a SIP/SIMPLE network environment that will allow the evaluation of key metrics such as the latency and throughput of the network under a number of scenarios. It will be shown that the amount of network traffic generated due to presence subscriptions can grow large, and the effects of this on the network performance will be analysed. From this analysis, it will be shown that SIP/SIMPLE presence traffic has a steady, predictable impact on the performance of the network. It will also be demonstrated that other nodes on the network that are transmitting non SIP/SIMPLE traffic do not suffer significant throughput degradation due to SIP/SIMPLE presence traffic.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130806602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
