At such conditions, problems such as sand deposition and water \u0000containment on the pipe wall may result in consequences such as sand-induced corrosion, mechanical failure, pipe fatigue, reduced \u0000flow area, loss of production and pipe blockage which are still currently unresolved by conventional and current models. \u0000Objective: \u0000A modelling approach was adopted to control the conditions leading to sand-induced corrosion and other related problems caused by \u0000flow stratification in the upstream petroleum sector since conventional methods adopted to screen sand, only contribute to the \u0000problem. Also, to date, mechanisms and models exist for other corrosion types such as CO2, H2S, acid-induced corrosion, etc. but \u0000none currently exists for sand-induced corrosion. However, the concept of force-competition or dimensionless numbers was adopted \u0000using a modelling approach to resolve the problem. \u0000Method: \u0000This research work resolves the situation by means of a three-phase model which incorporates sand, crude oil and water phases in its \u0000mass and momentum balance equations while taking into cognisance, the effect of eddies. The three-layer model established in this \u0000work, has its origin in a two-phase sand-crude oil system and, based on current literature, a modelling approach that considers the \u0000flow of sand, crude oil and water has never been adopted to tackle the problem of sand-induced corrosion caused by associated water \u0000as a stimulant for corrosion. \u0000Conclusion: \u0000The established model gave an accuracy of 99% when results from the model were compared with sand and crude oil production data \u0000obtained from the field. Based on the model’s reliability, flow mechanisms/dimensionless numbers were used to ascertain critical \u0000flow conditions in order to be able to avoid situations leading to sand deposition, sand-induced corrosion and other related problems. \u0000Based on the results obtained, the estimated Euler numbers revealed that the 18 m point of the pipe is at risk due to the impact of the \u0000sand-deposit-drag-force on the pipe wall. Based on carbonate reservoir characteristics, three parameters reflecting the macroscopic and microscopic of storage abundance, permeability, and median of pore throat radius were selected to establish the factor set and the evaluation criteria. After analysis of core and test data, a membership function is constructed by semi-drop trapezoid method and the weight formula is also determined by reservoir factor sub-index. The developed method then is used to evaluate a carbonate reservoir in the Tarim Basin in China. Based on the result of single well evaluation, the plane classification map of the carbonate reservoir quality is constructed. Results obtained from reservoir quality assessment in the K32 well show that Ilevel, II-level, and III-level reservoir qualities account for 58%, 37%, 5% of the reservoir, respectively. Different correlations to model this behavior can be classified into empirically-derived and analytically-derived correlations. The empirically-derived are those derived from field or simulation data. The analytically-derived are those derived from basic principle of mass balance that describes multiphase flow within the reservoir. The empirical correlations suffer from the limited ranges of data used in its generation and they are not function of reservoir rock and fluid data that vary per each reservoir.
