It adopted desk review method in examining the incidence of low-wage jobs in the Nigerian labour market. It relied on secondary data from relevant agencies and institutions that provide information on the state of jobs in labour market such as National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), African Development Bank (AfDB), International Labour Organization (ILO) and World Bank. The secondary data formed the basis for interpretation and analyses. The result from the empirical evidence show that majority (80%) of jobs in the Nigerian labour market are low wage jobs. It also found that in terms of distribution by gender, there is higher percentage (not less than 48%) of women in vulnerable jobs whose wages are quite low in Nigeria. Based on the findings, the paper recommends that labour market regulators should formulate and implement policy aimed at upscaling the skill set of workers in low wage jobs through education, training and re-training of workers in low wage jobs. It was also recommended that Nigerian minimum wage policy should be reviewed by adjusting the rate every year and also targeting the vulnerable workers and maintaining a different rate for the vulnerable workers among others.","PeriodicalId":376426,"journal":{"name":"The Millennium University Journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128117038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Companies' engagement in socially responsible projects by companies demonstrates their concern for a society that goes beyond profit. This paper examined CSR and EM in the Nigerian listed industrial goods companies. The lack of studies in Nigeria motivates the researcher to bridge the gap. Secondary data for the period of 2009-2018 of the eleven (11) industrial goods companies listed on the floor of the stock exchange was utilized. A regression analysis technique was used to analyze the data. The finding reveals that EM has a significant and positive effect on the CSR of listed Nigerian industrial goods companies. The study recommends that stakeholders, especially investors, creditors, and shareholders in the Nigerian listed industrial goods companies should give attention to the CSR practices of those companies as management might use that to cover up their manipulative practice. This would help them get insights and pay attention while taking decisions to grants loans on the expected transparency of earnings reported by those companies and should also pay adequate attention to the implementation of CSR projects by companies operating in the sector since the existence of EM practice is confirmed in the sector. Regulators like SEC, NSE, CBN and FRCN and auditors in Nigeria should put appropriate and proper measures in place for adequate scrutinization, examination, and evaluation of those companies for the detection of EM practice and finally, Accounting Standards like GAAP that give free hands to management to decide on the method of accounting policies should come up with definite restrictive methods on some accounting policies to constrain EM.","PeriodicalId":376426,"journal":{"name":"The Millennium University Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130466145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study uses secondary data which were extracted from ten (10) sampled manufacturing firms listed in the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) for the period 2010-2019. The study used Random Effects Model (REM) for the analysis of data. The results showed that financial expertise of audit committee has significant negative impact on earnings management while audit committee tenure has an insignificant negative impact on earnings management. Furthermore, share ownership of audit committee has significant negative impact on earnings management. The study therefore, concludes that both the audit committee expertise and share ownership of audit committee enhance the financial reporting quality of manufacturing firms in Nigeria. Based on the impact of members of audit committee with financial expertise, the study recommends among others that, the board should ensure appointing the sufficient audit committee members that are experts on financial matters. Similarly, the study also recommends the enclosure of more members with substantial shareholdings in the audit committee. This can enhance their willingness to protect their investment and helps in proper monitoring and supervision, thereby reducing earnings management.","PeriodicalId":376426,"journal":{"name":"The Millennium University Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132280776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve the objective of the study, survey research design was used for data collection. The study relied heavily on quantitative method by using a structured questionnaire which was administered on the employees of three selected telecommunication companies, MTN Nigeria, Airtel and Globacom at their Head offices respectively. The study adopted stratified sampling technique to administer Five hundred and thirty-three (533) questionnaires with three hundred and forty-two (342) (i.e. 64 percent) valid responses. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability test of all the variables indicated 0.87. Data gathered were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that Managers’ emotional intelligence skills have no significant effect on organisational performance. The implication of this finding is that most managers in private sector tends to be interested in regulations, monitoring and evaluating subordinate’s performance without caring for their feelings and emotions. Therefore, it is recommended that the telecommunication companies should expose their managers to trainings that focus on the acquisition of emotional intelligence skills all in a bid to achieve their corporate objectives.","PeriodicalId":376426,"journal":{"name":"The Millennium University Journal","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116848656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is crucial as it describes the level of environmental and social disclosures impact on companies' performance. This study uses environmental and social disclosures as independent variables while Returns on Assets (ROA) as a proxy for financial performance. The study formulates two hypotheses to guide the study and uses a panel regression model in testing the statistical parameter estimates. Ex Post Facto design was adopted and data were collected from the NSE Factbook and published financial statements of the oil and gas companies listed in the NSE with data ranging from 2010-2019. The findings of the study show that corporate environmental and social disclosures have a significant impact on companies' performance at a 5% significant level. Because of this, the study concludes that environmental and social disclosures have improved companies' performance over the years.
