Negative impacts of public voting and debates on marriage equality for LGBTIQ people have been previously documented in United States, but less so in other national contexts. Thematic analysis was conducted using written responses of LGBTIQ participants ( N = 5,313) to open-ended questions on a larger survey. Findings revealed that LGBTIQ participants experienced the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey debate as a pervasive and predominantly negative event. Participants reported experiences of prejudice and discrimination and increased fear, anxiety, anger, and depression. They also described the harm and hurt caused by widespread negative images of and messages about LGBTIQ people. Some participants felt their lives were under threat and reported psychological distress, including thoughts of suicide. Although a few participants noted positive support that helped them cope, most participants perceived the debate and vote as a highly stressful, socially fracturing process that threatened interpersonal relationships with family members, workmates, and communities. Many participants described feeling betrayed by the government, country, and Church. These findings extend previous studies that document the public health impacts of political processes that publicly debate the human rights of LGBTIQ individuals.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84813435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teaching About Women and Gender From a Transnational and Intersectional Feminist Perspective 跨国跨领域女性主义视角下的女性与性别教学

{"title":"Teaching About Women and Gender From a Transnational and Intersectional Feminist Perspective","authors":"S. S. Canetto","doi":"10.1037/IPP0000111","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1037/IPP0000111","url":null,"abstract":"Teaching about women and gender in psychology has been transformed in response to the field’s leading frameworks (e.g., diversity, intersectionality). For example, the content of U.S. psychology of women and gender textbooks has evolved, from a focus on a privileged range of humanity and a reliance on laboratory studies of college students, to addressing real-life issues of a diversity of women and men. The content of U.S. psychology of women and gender textbooks is, however, still centered on U.S. women and men and without acknowledgment of the cultural specificity of U.S. experiences. It also lags behind in terms of another important framework, that is, a transnational perspective. This article features a review of analytics for teaching about women and gender from a transnational and intersectional feminist perspective in psychology. These analytics are that (a) all theories and research findings are culture-bound; (b) there is variability in gender equality within and across countries; (c) historical perspectives on gender are critical in the psychology of women and gender class; (d) an examination of transnational systems and forces is necessary in the psychology of women and gender class; and (e) women’s experiences are not the same everywhere because of intersectionalities and context, but are similar as related to patriarchy being a transnationally dominant system. Sample practices and resources to teach about women and gender based on these transnational and intersectional feminist analytics are described.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86632640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Empathy and Forgiveness Among Mozambican Wives 莫桑比克妻子的同理心与宽恕

{"title":"Empathy and Forgiveness Among Mozambican Wives","authors":"Germano Vera Cruz, E. Mullet","doi":"10.1037/IPP0000110","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1037/IPP0000110","url":null,"abstract":"The relationship between empathy and forgiveness was assessed in a sample of Mozambican wives. A sample of 225 wives was presented with 24 vignettes depicting an affair between a husband and a woman. Vignettes were composed of all combinations of three factors: the length of the marriage, the severity of the affair, and the presence and nature of apologies. Wives were asked to judge the extent to which, in such circumstances, they would be able to regain the ability to empathize with their husband and, later, the degree to which they would feel able to forgive him. Through cluster analysis, qualitatively different positions were found. For 47%, it was never easy either to regain empathy or to forgive. For 8%, it was always easy. For 28%, it depended on the severity of the affair and on the presence of apologies. For the remaining 18%, it also depended on the length of marriage. Overall, in 71% of the cases, positions were similar with regard to both, empathy and forgiveness. Nevertheless, in 29% of the cases, positions differed. Because for most wives empathy was thus very closely associated with forgiveness, the results suggest that empathy-centered psychological therapies can be considered as quite appropriate in the Mozambican context in situations in which women would like to forgive more or less severe transgressions. However, given that for 21% of the women the empathy–forgiveness association appeared to be much weaker, alternative therapies based on practices developed by local women’s associations should also be considered.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89744732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The Woven Self: An Auto-Ethnography of Cultural Disruption and Connectedness","authors":"Pita King","doi":"10.1037/IPP0000112","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1037/IPP0000112","url":null,"abstract":"This current auto-ethnographic study is set against the backdrop of colonial policies of urbanization and cultural assimilation that continue to impact the everyday lives of Māāori (indigenous people of New Zealand). Colonial actions have brought about a state of mass disruption to Māori traditions of forming and maintaining connections between people, ancestral homelands, and ways of being. Today, many Māori continue to grapple with the social, cultural, and economic consequences that these upheavals have brought about. My aim within this research is to engage with how Māori preserve and maintain their cultural selves while being stretched across a diverse landscape of being that is populated by new urban and heritage rural spaces. Grounded in Kaupapa Māori theory and working in the spirit of culturally patterned auto-ethnography, I offer a case study of my family’s experiences of disconnection and our efforts to strengthen connections with our ancestral homelands, communities, and ways of being. As my analysis illustrates, the enactment of culturally informed everyday social practices facilitates process of reconnection and the strengthening of connections, and allows the reproduction of Māori selves across space and time. Furthermore, I argue that cultural connectedness can be deepened and enriched by going beyond the extraordinary moments of big events (ritualized engagements), and by becoming part of the ordinary and everyday reproduction of cultural traditions and values. This article contributes to broader understandings of how indigenous peoples seek to work through and resist the ongoing impacts of colonial disruption.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87918309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the influence of time on postmigration living difficulties (PMLD) and psychological distress has not been extensively investigated. In this investigation, we used regression analyses to examine whether length of residence in the United States would moderate the relationship between psychological symptoms and PMLD in a sample of 52 adult East African refugees. The sample was predominantly male (female n = 13) with a mean age of ∼37 years ( SD = 20.91) and mean length of residence in the United States of 9.9 years ( SD = 5.85). The moderating effect of years living in the United States on the depression–PMLD relationship was significant, and explained an additional 9% of variance in PMLD. The relationship between depressive symptoms and PMLD became significantly related at ∼7 years of residence in the United States, and became more positive as values in the sample approached the longest duration in the United States (30 years). No such moderating effect was found for the association between posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and PMLD. These results highlight the risk of marginalization as well as the need for early and sustained psychosocial interventions for refugee populations in the United States.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78078858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Ethnic Identity Exploration Among South Asian Immigrant Young Adults in New Zealand","authors":"Jaimee Stuart, C. Ward","doi":"10.1037/ipp0000107","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1037/ipp0000107","url":null,"abstract":"The exploration of ego-identity is a normative process that is necessary for the development of an achieved identity, but how this relates to ethnic identity for immigrant youth is not completely clear. This research sought to test a model combining theories of ego-identity and ethnic identity development with South Asian immigrant young adults in New Zealand. It was hypothesized that moratorium (ego-identity exploration without commitment) would trigger domain-specific ethnic exploration, evident in relationships with both negative (ethno-cultural identity conflict [EIC]) and positive (ethnic identity search [EIS]) facets of ethnic identity exploration. In turn, EIC was hypothesized to be negatively related to ethnic identity achievement (measured as a composite of centrality, in-group ties, and in-group affect), whereas EIS was hypothesized to be positively related to ethnic identity achievement. Results indicate that the model fit the data well, &khgr;2(1) = 0.72, p = .15, comparative fit index = 1.00, adjusted goodness-of-fit index = .96, root-mean-square error of approximation = .00, standardized root-mean-square residual = .01. These findings suggest that moratorium has a negative indirect effect on ethnic identity achievement (through EIC) and a positive indirect effect on ethnic identity achievement (through EIS).","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90511244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A positive masculinities framework informs this theoretical thematic analysis of semistructured interviews with 7 migrant fathers and 2 sons-as-fathers who were caring for younger siblings in Guatemala. Analyses sought to illuminate how the performances of fathering in the context of migration depart from and sometimes challenge hegemonic conceptions of masculinities evident in much of the migration scholarship. In total, 5 themes capturing varying performances of fathering were identified: (a) staying-at-home, (b) emotionally expressing cross-border relationality, (c) communicating within the family about return and consejos (conventional wisdom), (d) sons-as-fathers caring for family members here and there, and (e) maintaining the household intergenerationally. We discuss how the transnationalizing of these Mayan families has contributed to more diverse gendered roles and relationships, with a focus on some of the potential positive influences of this process on family relationships. Implications for future research about the various ways in which fathers and sons contribute to their transnational families, especially in difficult sociopolitical contexts, are discussed.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82595298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Ready or Not Here I Come: A Qualitative Investigation of Students’ Readiness Perceptions for Study Abroad/Away","authors":"Lynette H. Bikos, Scott Manning, Zachary J. Frieders","doi":"10.1037/ipp0000105","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1037/ipp0000105","url":null,"abstract":"Participation in education abroad is frequently considered to be a high-impact educational practice that will contribute to global learning outcomes and psychosocial development. Yet inequities in participation rates and lackluster reentry outcomes remain concerning. Our purpose was to investigate what students perceived to be preparatory for the upcoming study abroad/away programs in which they were enrolled. Consensual qualitative research–modified (Spangler, Liu, & Hill, 2012) was used to analyze 1,199 responses from 458 students (up to three responses per student) regarding what best prepared them for study abroad. Participants were from three institutions with a mean age 20.69 (SD = 2.70; 72% female). Regarding race/ethnicity, 55% were White/Caucasian, 17% Asian/Asian American, 16% Hispanic/Latin#, and 4% Black/African American; 4% were international students. Responses mapped well onto social cognitive career theory’s (SCCT) model of how basic career interests develop over time (Lent, 2013; Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994). The correspondence of our results with SCCT provides reciprocal support for (a) the validity of SCCT as a theoretical frame to understand choice behaviors and (b) SCCT’s predictive utility in future investigations of education abroad. Disaggregation of data permitted comparisons of readiness. Previous international travel was the most frequent preparation for White/Caucasian students, previous study abroad was for international students, and moving away from home was most cited for students who withdrew. Further investigation of these differences has implications for (a) disparate access to resources, (b) program selection, and (c) tailoring preparation to maximize student engagement in global learning.","PeriodicalId":37636,"journal":{"name":"International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77233885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
