The first section identifies some managerial challenges, which are inherent in any technological change. Essentially, the change process highlights the interdependent relationship of those three main factors. In the second section, issues of technology, people and organizational culture are discussed in further detail, with some examples from literature. Why people change, what it takes to minimize resistance and how to make change successful are questions that emerge again and again and need further understanding. Consequently, by reviewing the relevant literatures, the authors summarize some of the research with a focus on the decisions made by management when selecting new systems. They investigate those decisions with respect to the three distinct \"threads\" or factors that directly influence technological change. Lastly, by establishing fundamental propositions, the final two sections provide some implications and conclusions as well as possibilities for future research.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. The rapid growth and advancement of information technology (IT) has opened windows of opportunities for organizations as well as for individuals. One clear example is electronic commerce. It is expected that e-commerce will explode in the next few years, reaching more than $300 billion with a total of 31 million online buyers involving billions of transactions. However, organizations, in their attempt to conduct business over the Internet, face monumental challenges and difficulties. Since e-commerce is a new phenomenon and continues to be in its infantile stage, acquiring the right and required technology and/or personnel presents a huge challenge for many organizations. E-commerce challenges, in general, can be classified into two groups-technical and management. Technical challenges deal with hardware, software and network problems. In addition, payment methods, security and service support are issues that require a great deal of attention. On the other hand, challenges related to management include staffing expertise, change of organization structure and management transition. E-commerce awareness is yet another challenge that requires close attention. In order to meet these challenges, there is a dire need for applying scientific techniques and methodologies to e-commerce. A systematic 3-step approach is developed to better understand the needs of e-commerce. First, the status quo of representative businesses in the public and private sectors are examined. Next, needs of businesses are identified. Lastly, mathematical models are developed to solve specific e-commerce problems. The authors report the case of a telephony business unit, which currently sees the convergence of traditional telephony with the Internet. Literature suggests that in such situations of innovation on the level of the product architectures success and survival of the incumbent firm depend on their embedded architectural competencies. The authors propose that architectural competencies can be measured using business process level accounting figures. It has become evident that the real options approach offers a more robust alternative to current project evaluation processes, and that there is a need for a user friendly, easy assimilated tool that can be used to implement these techniques. To assist managers in applying these techniques to project selection, management, and tracking, a set of tools is proposed. Spinning off ventures often results in the emergence of networks where the parent firms and their spin-offs engage in varying degrees of resource sharing. However, relatively little is known about the processes through which the networks consisting of the parent firm and its spin-off firms come into being. Perhaps because of this reason, there is some confusion in the usage of the term corporate spin-off firm. In some studies, this term is used to denote embryonic ventures, while other studies reserve the term for the divestment of mature businesses. To manage multiple design projects (MDP) executed concurrently, these approaches may not pay enough attention to all situations occurring throughout projects. Unfortunately, increasing information makes specific checkpoint review insufficient to control the project. The conflict of MDP causes more problems than those from traditional projects. A design project audit needs not only a checkpoint (one-dimension) but also the overall process (multi-dimension) review. Negligence of any changes or abnormal project situation may cause project catastrophe. To ensure design project success and manage design project changes under control, an auditing system is developed to provide the function of avoiding project failure. This paper first uses coloured Petri nets to simulate the status of multiple design projects and analyze required auditing functions. Conflicts can be located and processed within the coloured Petri nets. A neural network is then created and used to recognize the error rate of route dispatching through training from previous design cases. This trend offers many advantages, yet brings up many new problems that have yet to be acknowledged or effectively addressed from an engineering management perspective. In this research work, issues of concern in the outsourcing process are identified and the problems and complexities involved in joint product developments and its management are discussed. We address first, the joint development process, then present and discuss the identified problems of joint developments and extrapolate them to the dilemmas and issues faced by engineering managers. Sources of systems innovation opportunities that led in the past to successful operational capabilities are presented.
