Our preliminary results show a correlation between models that win design awards and business success. We found some outstanding models in Apple's product family and are exploring the contribution of these models to the overall success of the company.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. Following a model that considers only. three basic economic resources-knowledge, technology and capital-the analysis concluded that the sector's value added was provided by the use of knowledge, 61%, by the use of technology, 23%, and by the use of capital, 16%. The value added by engineering was also computed and the result was 55%. A comparison between the evolution of work productivity and knowledge intensity, in the decade, resulted in the calculation of a continuous deficit of about 9% per year concerning the knowledge about the use of technology. The authors think that this conclusion also applies to one part of the knowledge required in e-business.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. Efficiency and stock market performance in electric power generating companies 发电公司的效率和股票市场表现

Norsworthy","doi":"10.1109/IEMC.2001.960576","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IEMC.2001.960576","url":null,"abstract":"Efficiency in energy production and distribution should have a positive effect on the market performance of the power companies equity issues. However, there are institutional factors that may dilute the effect. To investigate this linkage, we measure the efficiency of 41 electric power companies, as well as the market performance of their common stocks over a five-year period. To measure the efficiencies of power companies, we apply techniques of data envelopment analysis (DEA) that allow for different output mixes to characterize different companies. The extent of this linkage is important for management of electric power companies, especially those that are privatized. DEA is accomplished using linear programming methodology. The DEA approach is applied to data from 1986 to 1990. The growth in relative efficiency is calculated for a group of decision-making units, based on the ratio of outputs to inputs, where inputs are weighted by their market values and outputs by their costs in terms of inputs. These relative efficiency measures are then compared with the performances of common stocks of the companies for the same five-year period. DEA permits evaluation of both technical and allocative dimensions of the efficiency of an enterprise. Among other objectives, we attempt to determine whether changes in technical or allocative efficiency have greater or more immediate impact on stock market performance. Because regulatory practices intervene between efficiency and profitability, it is interesting to analyze the deviations from the expected market performances predicted by pure physical or engineering efficiency.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. Longer flights, higher aircraft utilization rates, along with more fuel efficient aircraft, and operational plans designed to economize fuel are major reasons to expect better productivity performance in the airline industry. This achievement cannot be realized unless technological changes in the aircraft manufacturing and in the management practices of airline companies take place. The productivity performance of airlines should also be reflected in stock market prices and (nonnegatively) in returns for companies providing the airlines with equipment and other services. We investigate the effects of more appropriate technology and their equity market impacts for major commercial airlines. We examine the distributions of returns before, during and after deregulation to see whether deregulation has increased or decreased risk. We also examine the relationships between stock returns and prices, and data envelopment analysis (DEA) and total factor productivity (TFP) measures of efficiency. This information about expected stock market effects of deregulation and efficiency can clarify the choices faced by managers of technological change and by policymakers.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. Nakao","doi":"10.1109/IEMC.2001.960582","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IEMC.2001.960582","url":null,"abstract":"The paper proposes a planning methodology of systems technologies using a three-dimensional morphological box. The authors assume that the planning problem of systems technologies could be represented by three basic attributes, i.e. needs (system requirements), seeds (basic technologies) and systems technologies (system problems). They introduce a three-dimensional morphological box, whose axes are the above attributes, as a framework of planning activities. The constituent items of each axis are obtained from the recognition of societal and technological trends. The current and planned systems are arranged at the relevant position of the morphological box. By investigating each system embedded in the morphological box, systems technologies necessary to realize target systems are extracted. The planning process by the proposed method consists of three phases: (1) recognition of societal and technological issues and trends; (2) projection of these recognition on the axes of three-dimensional morphological box; and (3) investigation of the current and planned systems embedded in the morphological box. By the method, one can systematically plan new systems and systems technologies reflecting current societal and technological trends. The method has been applied to actual planning activities and new directions of system technologies have been proposed in the development of real practical systems. The effectiveness of the method has been confirmed through these applications.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. Change Management and the New Industrial Revolution. System engineering equals strategic thinking: why engineers should manage tomorrow's new technology 系统工程等同于战略思考:为什么工程师应该管理未来的新技术

First, there was little planning. Then, in the 1970s, planning could do no wrong-everyone used detailed planning. But due to major uncertainties in the 1980s, detailed plans were missed and planning, once again, was less important. Mintzberg's influence led to an attitude of \"just do it\" in the 1990s with spectacular gains by the dotcom companies using emergent plans. However, we then had the dotcom crash in 2000. The author examines whether a middle ground of some detailed planning plus emergent plans (strategic thinking) is a better formula. Engineers have been trained to look at all sides of the issues and continually evaluate the risks similar to strategic thinking. He studies whether combining an engineer's technical background with business training may be the \"right ticket\" for technology firms in the 2000s.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. These processes are the result of a master thesis project carried out in early 2000 with the sales organization of a telecommunication OEM. The tremendous growth, the change in market structure as well as a very tight labor market situation were the incentives for trying to develop processes that would cope with this situation A brief introduction in the standard problem approach of our research group is given. The changes in the market structure are discussed. This discussion is enhanced with some facts that were emerging at the time the project was carried out, but became really visible at the collapse of the telecommunication branch late 2000, early 2001. The existing project process and the proposed improvements are presented. By now the telecommunication branch is in serious trouble, resulting in severe investment cuts and layoffs. It is shown how the proposed process improvements can provide the knowledge asset management infrastructure, necessary for downscaling operations without destroying the knowledge infrastructure necessary to revive the business.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. Although inspection has fallen out of favor, such circumstances require that complete finished goods inspections be carried out. After reviewing the literature, approaches to managing such inspection tasks are discussed with a particular emphasis on the effects of inspection error. An approach to designing experiments to estimate inspection error probabilities in an industrial setting is described.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings. The coexistence of these two types of order fulfillment creates a hybrid distribution system. One of the distinguishing features of this type of distribution system is its multiple order-entry (and consequently order-processing) points: one at the retail outlets and one at the distribution center(s). The new challenges introduced by the hybrid distribution system exist on many levels, including the co-existence of multiple requirements associated with differences in: demand pattern (and consequently, differences in material handling and storage requirements), shipping and transportation methods, inventory systems, information systems, and performance measurement. This paper describes the major issues and challenges associated with hybrid distribution systems and identifies directions for future research.","PeriodicalId":376256,"journal":{"name":"IEMC'01 Proceedings.
