The harmonics analysis is performed in order to observe the percentage reduction of amplitude current harmonics and total harmonic distortion for passive and active power filter at various loads. In addition to that the bidirectional switching is used as a strategy control in active power filter. Representative result of circuit simulations is carried out. The results show that the active power filter can simultaneously attenuate various frequencies and are compared with passive filter which is only filtering an individual harmonics. Also, the significant percentage of reduction for the amplitude current harmonics and total harmonic distortion by active power filter are compared to passive filter. Furthermore, the sinusoidal current waveform quality at distribution lines which filtered by active power filter is better compared with passive filter. Therefore, the active power filter is good to reduce harmonics in the electrical distribution systems.","PeriodicalId":375856,"journal":{"name":"PECon 2004. Proceedings. Several electrical battery models are reviewed and discussed. Using one of the most accurate electrical battery models, the voltage-current behavior and characteristics of NAS battery are modeled and simulated using EMTDC/PSCAD software tool. The D-STATCOM is intended to replace the widely used static Var compensator (SVC). For fast response requirement, the feedforward compensation scheme is employed to enable the D-STATCOM to mitigate voltage sag and at the same time correct the power factor, thus acting as a load compensator. The compensation scheme of the D-STATCOM is derived using the symmetrical component method. In this work, the 12-pulse D-STATCOM configuration with IGBT has been designed and the graphic based models of the D-STATCOM have been developed using the PSCAD/EMTDC electromagnetic transient simulation program. Accordingly, simulations are first carried out to illustrate the use of D-STATCOM in mitigating voltage sag in a distribution system. The topology is able to simultaneously utilize unipolar SPWM control scheme and natural commutation techniques. The conversion efficiency is inherently high due to the existence of freewheeling periods per switching cycle and the utilization of zero current switching (ZCS) and zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation. Moreover, with minimum number of power switches at cycloconverter stage, the conduction loss can be further reduced. This prevents the widespread system collapse when a fault occurs. The scope of study consists of system analysis, design and simulation. Dynamic simulations are performed using the ERACS power analysis software. When the frequency falls below preset level at a certain rate, a predetermined amount of load will be removed to restore the system frequency. Important design considerations for this scheme are the maximum anticipated overload, number of load shedding steps, size of load shed at each step and frequency relay settings. Load restoration after load shedding can only be executed after the system has recovered completely and its normal frequency is restored. Loads should be restored in small blocks sequenced by time delay between successive restorations to allow frequency stabilization. A case study is carried out on PETRONAS Penapisan Melaka, whereby a load shedding scheme is designed for its upcoming cogeneration plant. Dynamic simulations performed indicate that the load shedding design is feasible and able to halt frequency collapse due to generation loss. Finding an optimal solution to the unit commitment (UC) and economic load dispatch (ELD) is one of the smart strategies that being practiced by most of power producers. UC and ELD main problems are to find the minimum total fuel cost and fast computation simulation time scheduling of UC and ELD. Obtaining the best solution to these two problems lead to remarkable saving in the power system operational cost Lagrangian relaxation (LR) is one of the best solution methods to UC and ELD problems. The approach is more efficient and easier than other methods in solving large-scale problems. Lately, the emerging of bundling methods (BM) improves the weakness of LR. Through BM, the LR dual functions are updated at the higher level. With the use of interior point method as an initialization method this paper presents LR and BM based solution technique to UC and ELD problems. It is based on application of the said techniques to thermal units consisting of 45 generators. In this new approach, the power stage and control loop design equations are programmed in PSPICE. For this purpose, an option available in PSPICE called analog behavioral modeling (ABM) is used. By doing so, the parameter of power stage and the component values of the error amplifier can be easily obtained by means of PSPICE DC analysis. The methodology of development is presented in some detail. Even though, this new highly efficient electronic technology provides improved product quality with increased productivity by the use of smaller and lighter electrical components but they are the sources of harmonics. Recent surveys on the three-phase four-wire electric power distribution systems with computer and nonlinear loads show excessive currents in the neutral conductor. The neutral currents are basically zero-sequence current harmonics, which is mostly, consists of triplen current harmonics. As a result, the perfect sinusoidal voltage and current waveform are very much distorted. To solve this problem, a simple and practical approach to reduce harmonics current in 3-phase 4-wire power distribution system is proposed. The using of LC filter in three-phase four-wire system reduces the harmonic problem in the system. This LC filter is depending on value of capacitor and inductor. It is not only reducing zero-sequence harmonics but also reduce other harmonics in the system. Besides that, this application also can improve power factor and reduced the THD system to the standard IEEE-std 519.
