The volatility spillover and co-movement between the NIFTY spot and futures indices during the period of 2011–2021 are investigated. Maximal overlap discrete wavelet transformation (MODWT)-based DCC GARCH and Diebold and Yilmaz (2012) models have been applied to understand the dynamic associations and spillovers between returns of NIFTY spot and futures indices. To uncover the time-varying vibrant communications among the markets at diverse scales, a wavelet coherence technique has been used. The study found that index prices have a strong and significant dynamic conditional correlation at all scales, and there is diffusion of news in the short as well as long terms. The study uses novel granular wavelet-based research models to decode time–frequency varying behavioural patterns of spot and futures stock indices of India. It highlights the relationships between variables of interest over a range of timescales and allows market participants to rapidly evaluate their investment horizons at varied frequency band scales when building portfolio choices. Therefore, the study offers added understanding to investors and risk managers. We argue that self-reliance can be achieved through self-sufficiency at the societal level. Next, we review the extant literature on self-sufficiency and theorize its linkages with social and solidarity economy (SSE) in the context of electric power generation. The participatory and democratic nature of governance in decision-making processes is one of the main principles of the SSE sector. Variations in democratic governance and inclusive participation in SSE depend on SSE structure. Subsequently, we move into the focus areas of the article, where the purpose is to explore the linkages between the development of SSE initiatives and sustainable development goals focused on environmental protection and sustainable production and consumption. Scaling up and solarizing agricultural pump sets have been good initiatives at addressing issues around agriculture, water and electricity requirement. This study explores SSE initiatives that address these issues and explores scaling up and linking with institutions and policies at the macro level. The study presents empirical evidence of such initiatives in the renewable energy sector. This article is expected to contribute to the existing literature on SSEs and offer insights on how scaling up SSEs can help in sustainable rural development, which would lead to self-sufficiency and subsequently self-reliance at a societal level. We explore the hypothesis of impressionable years (18–25) about having experienced a major macroeconomic crisis and its persistent consequences on trust in institutions. Based on microdata from a recent opinion survey, the regression analysis exploits the differential effect of a major Argentine economic crisis (2001–2002) on different cohorts. We include province fixed effects, age dummies, and other economic and demographic controls. We consider different placebos tests and robustness checks to rule out potential limitations in the estimates. The results suggest that young adults who experienced a major macroeconomic crisis express, almost two decades after the event, a lower trust in political institutions, including the National Congress and the Supreme Court, and a greater perception of corruption among public officials.","PeriodicalId":37410,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Microeconomics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45829371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The standard neoclassical economics model predicts that all players will choose a strategy of non-cooperation, establishing it as the Nash equilibrium. We examine how social preferences and behavioural norms influence the player’s expectations from others and their own choices, by experimentally testing for the same using a 2 × 2 factorial design with the following three levels of partner selection arrangements: (i) game playing with stranger, (ii) face-to-face game playing with peer, and (iii) game playing with friend. The experimental results reveal significant deviations from the standard predictions of the one-shot PD game. The experimental data revealed that (i) players while interacting with a peer cooperated significantly more than playing with a stranger and (ii) players playing with a friend cooperated significantly more than playing with a peer. These changes in the social preferences of the players were further investigated in terms of trust/distrust and four behavioural norms—positive reciprocity, negative reciprocity, exploitation and altruism, and how these factors interact in influencing decision-making with respect to cooperation. However, there are insufficient studies on the association between immunization and children’s future cognitive abilities, which might directly impact labour market outcomes. Cross-sectional data cannot do justice to this programme evaluation as the children eligible for immunization are too young to be tested for any cognitive abilities. Using individual-level panel data from the Indian Human Development Survey (IHDS) round I (2004–2005, N = 3,208, age = 12–23 months with 50.6% male) and round II (2011–2012, N = 2,534, age = 96–107 months with 50.8% male), we are trying to assess the linkage between childhood care and child’s cognitive development. We also addressed the potential endogenous relation between parents’ decision for full immunization and kids’ cognitive achievement by using a quasi-experimental regression technique: propensity score matching. Our study finds a significant effect of childhood immunization on the cognitive development of grown-up children through better reading, writing and mathematics skills.","PeriodicalId":37410,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Microeconomics","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41328537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With economic development, a sustainable social support system during old age is essential to ensure life-long wellbeing. An accurate estimation of the problem and identification of appropriate vulnerable groups are indispensable for the success of any sustainable social support policy. However, such an attempt is lacking in the literature. Moreover, those, who tried to estimate the old-age vulnerability, mainly adopted the unidimensional vulnerability approach, and considered a single period. The present study, however, argues that vulnerability is a multi-dimensional phenomenon, and developed a comprehensive index. Furthermore, using quantitative and qualitative analyses, the study identified the extent of vulnerability among the elderly people across gender, socio-religion identity, household financial status, level of education and geographical residence. The findings have policy implications in presenting a comprehensive tool and identifying the vulnerable social groups to design a sustainable social support system for the older population. The role even may change among firms of various technological intensities. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of in-house R&D, importing technology and R&D tax credits on India’s manufacturing firms’ productivity according to their technological intensity. Our results show that R&D and technology imports have a significant and positive impact on productivity in all technologically intense industries. We have further estimated a substitute relationship between R&D and Importing Technology in high-tech, medium–high-tech and medium–low-tech industries. However, the complementarity relationship between R&D and importing technology appears more pronounced in low-tech industries. Further, the R&D tax credit policy positively impacts firm productivity in medium–high-tech, medium–low-tech and low-tech industries. In order to boost productivity, there need to be policies that support R&D, including R&D tax incentives for companies in all technologically intensive industries. Using principal component analysis, sampled households were categorized by urbanicity index. A quadratic almost ideal demand system (QUAIDS) was employed to estimate expenditure and price elasticities. From the result, all seven food groups were normal goods across the urban categories, with the meat group being more expenditure-elastic than the others (1.16–2.42). The own-price elasticities differ among food commodities, with the meat and roots/tubers groups being most elastic at the low (−1.35) and middle (−1.05) urban categories, respectively. Findings suggest that changes in urbanicity levels have a substantial impact on the composition of household food demand and, by extension, the extent of food access in Nigeria. Therefore, the use of aggregate demand estimates for the entire urban population might underestimate the effect of expected changes in the urbanization level on food demand. To estimate the effects of interest, we adopt the individual fixed effects model that exploits the within-individual variation in rainfall shock exposure. We uncover the harmful impacts of rainfall shocks on individual health and subjective well-being. Particularly, a 100% increase in rainfall relative to the district-specific norms make individuals 14.3 and 14.6 percentage points less likely to report themselves to be healthy and healthier relative to last year, respectively. They are also 13.7 and 5.5 percentage points less likely to consider themselves wealthy in comparison to other residents in their villages and Vietnam, respectively. We further show that individuals working in both agriculture and non-agriculture industries are adversely affected by rainfall shocks, but the impacts are larger in magnitude for the agriculture group. The findings suggest that effective measures from the government and households are required to alleviate the costs of climate volatility such as rainfall shocks.
