Swadźba","doi":"10.15290/OES.2019.01.95.02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15290/OES.2019.01.95.02","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose – The aim of this article is to present the evolution of Poland's economic system over the last hundred years, from regaining the independency in 1918 to the present day, and to try to capture its specific features and show the systemic differences between Poland and other countries. Research methods – Various research methods were used, including: critical analysis of the literature, historical analysis, comparative analysis of the economic systems in Poland in the last one hundred years, as well as the economic system of Poland and other countries during this period. Description of research – The subject of consideration is the economic system in the macro scale (national economic system). In addition, we are interested in the economic system in the narrow sense – the regulatory sphere of the economy. It has a direct impact on the country's economic performance, and thus, on the real sphere. The study focuses on the ownership and the mechanism for coordinating economic decisions (with particular emphasis on the role of the market and the state) as the two main determinants of the economic system. Finding – The last hundred years of Poland were also turbulent in terms of changes in the economic system. Poland has gone through two megasystems: capitalism and socialism. From capitalism to socialism and back to capitalism. During these radical changes we were dealing with the evolution of the economic system, both within the framework of the market economy system and the centrally planned economy system. In addition, the economic system of Poland in particular subperiods had specific features and differed from the economic system of other countries functioning in these two megasystems. This was due to the specific socio-cultural factors in Poland, as well as to the specific historical situation in which our country existed.","PeriodicalId":373923,"journal":{"name":"Optimum. Research methodology – The conducted historical analysis shows that several global trends influenced local solutions starting from neoliberal self-regulation sectoral approach to the more statecontrol oriented integrated model. The author describes the mechanism that drove the evolution of the Polish financial system and presents how the financial supervisory responded to these changes. The most important part of the article is devoted to the description of the Polish financial sector’s response to the last financial crisis and the role that the financial supervisory model played in finding successful solutions for complex risks transmitted from international financial markets. Finding – The article allows to understand better the financial system’s role in the sound economic development and the new systemic perception of the financial stability and encourages researchers to search for new financial and macroeconomic paradigms to be able to explain free-market failure in ensuring proper functioning of financial intermediation and finding a new solution that make the local and global financial system immune to inevitable future shocks. The main scope of the research is concentrated around the extended institutional supervisory framework with macroprudential policy as a new driving force for post-crisis regulatory order that the Polish banking sector must join. Originality/value – According to the knowledge of the author, it is one of the few articles concerning development of the Polish financial system and financial supervision in the context of institutional changes in the global and local regulatory framework after post-socialist transformation and 2007+ crisis.","PeriodicalId":373923,"journal":{"name":"Optimum. Description – It was pointed out that on the doorstep of ownership transformation in Poland, in 1989, managers of the state-owned enterprises usually distanced themselves from the legacy of the past of the companies they managed. They used a “thick line” policy. In their managerial activitie, they could not refer to their own experiences and prove they were “witnesses of mistakes”. As a result of the above, the process of ownership transformation and, the following modernization of enterprises, including their organizational structure, method of management and work organization, were in many cases delayed, and in many cases ended in the declaration of bankruptcy. Only some enterprises which firmly broke up with the legacy of the past and after ownership transformation joined the global market, managed to succeed. In a private sector that formed after 1989, entrepreneurs, due to the lack of tradition of carrying out business, could only count on their own intuition and act basing on the trial-and-error method. At the end of 1990s a younger generation of entrepreneurs gained a possibility to analyze mistakes committed by people who had started their economic activity just after 1989. Such was the way of formation of a generation of entrepreneurs, so-called: “witnesses of mistakes”.","PeriodicalId":373923,"journal":{"name":"Optimum.
