Twenty four individually fed multiparous close-up Holstein cows averaging body weight 687.9 kg were allocated in three different treatments (8 cows per each). The first treatment (T1) has contained 0.21% sulfur (DM basis), the second treatment (T2) has contained 0.41% sulfur which supplied through magnesium sulfate and the third treatment (T3) has contained 0.41% sulfur supplied through combination of magnesium sulfate and an organic source of sulfur (Mepron). All the cows were fed same diet after parturition until 21 d. The DMI for both pre- and postcalving was affected by treatments and T2 showed the lowest DMI among treatments. Glucose, calcium, and copper were decreased in T2. However, blood concentrations of BHBA, NEFA, urea, creatinine phosphokinase, and aspartate amino transferase were increased in T2. The results indicated that although magnesium sulfate has negative effect on dairy cow health and performance, a combination of magnesium sulfate and organic source of sulfur in close-up diets could have positive effects on DMI and performance of Holstein dairy cows.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127754859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Amitie Jomba, secondary school, Nyabihu District, Shyira sector, Rwanda, 2013 to compare the growth performances of young rabbits fed by forages and those fed by forages supplemented by wheat bran. The study started by the distribution of young rabbits while choosing ones of good zootechnic performances, these young rabbits were divided in two butches of 12 individuals each. After constitution of butches we have performed the feeding, watering, control of performances, programme of breeding and treatment and analysis of data obtained during weighing of young rabbits. The results of our study show that the witness butch gave the average daily weight gain of 9.8g while the experimental butch gave the average daily weight gain of 21g. According to carcass yield, the average carcass weight for slaughtered rabbits of experimental butch is 1.5kg while for the witness butch is 0.95kg. The average carcass yield is superior for the experimental butch (60.6%) compared to the witness butch (58.9%).","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127820828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment was carried out at 120 mature male quails with 134± 4 g mean live weight were assigned in a completely randomized design to three treatments: 1-The total collection of excreta method (TC), 2-External marker (Cr2o3) Method and 3-The last group for determination of endogenous losses. A reference diet (RD) was then formulated to supply the birds' nutritional requirements. Feedstuffs (corn) replaced RD at 40%. Five replications and eight quails per experimental unit were used. The experimental period was twelve days, seven days for adaptation to experimental cages and five days for the collection of excreta. Values of Apparent Metabolizable Energy (AME) and True Metabolizable Energy (TME) were calculated on the basis of analysis of result. Feed intake (FI) was measured during the experiment daily by difference between allocated feed and orts. Based on feed intake and dry matter records, dry matter consumption (DMC) was calculated. Excretion of DM was calculated based on excreta weight and DM of excreta in each replicate. Dry matter digestibility coefficient was measured by means of DM intake and DM excretion. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between TC and CrO method in energy values of corn. The means of apparent metabolizable energy (AME) of the corn with TC and CrO method was 2881.58 and 2985.25 Kcal/kg, respectively. Feedstuff metabolizable energy estimation using the external marker method with the use of chromium oxide (Cr2o3) was similar to that obtained using total excreta collection method, demonstrating that total excreta collection can be replaced by chromium oxide (Cr2o3) marker methods in Japanese quail. The difference observed in the metabolizable energy values of corn among this study and NRC recommendation suggested that Japanese quail can used energy content of corn less efficiently than chickens.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126491303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been contributing to the household income and poverty alleviation and national economy through export. The country has huge apicultural resources that made it the leading honey and beeswax producer in Africa. Moreover, Ethiopia is a country where apicultural research is being conducted in a coordinated manner under the national agricultural research system. Hence, a lot of information has been gathered on different aspects of the beekeeping. This is a review of various research results that are from published and unpublished papers over a long period of time and various reviews in the course of the apiculture. It has been revealed that the highest percentage of honeybee population is hived in traditional, transitional and modern hives, only the smallest proportion is remain as wild. However, attempts by various investigators and development actors showed that both the production and quality can be improved in terms of transforming the beekeeping system, processing and marketing. This review paper also tried to address both natural and man-made bottle-necks that damage the sector not to reach the satisfactory level. It also tried to identify some of the opportunities that can boost the sector if we manage and utilize them properly.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128968941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, artificial feed need to contain essential nutrients and free of pathogenic microorganism. Samples of both imported and local fish feed samples were collected and presence of microorganisms was examined using bacteriological media. Morphological and Biochemical identification of the isolates were carried out. Also, antibiotic susceptibility patterns of the bacteria isolated were carried out using Gram negative and positive specific antibiotics (Oxoid) with reference to zones of inhibition observed from the plates. It was observed that fish feed samples possess pH and moisture content ranges from 6.8 to 7.0 and 10% to 17% respectively. The proportion of microorganisms obtained from the sample shows Bacillus sp 33%, Staphylococcus sp 13%, Streptococcus sp 13%, Pseudomonas sp 7%, Klebsiella sp 7% and Proteus sp 6%. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested and interpreted using NCCLS, 2006. Regulatory authorities on animal (fish) feed should therefore endeavor to ensure pathogen-free animal (fish) feed. This will ensure good and healthy meat or food (fish) production for human population.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127599737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four treatments: T0% (feed with zero supplementation of neem leaf meal), T5% (feed with 5% supplementation of neem leaf meal), T10% (feed with 10% supplementation of neem leaf meal) and T15% (feed with 15% supplementation of neem leaf meal) respectively, were utilized in a completely randomized design (CRD). One hundred and twenty (120) 3 weeks old unsexed grower Japanese quails were used for the performance study. At the end of the 35- day performance study the quails were decapitated and a set of 2ml blood samples taken from 3 quails per treatment into plastic tubes containing the anti-coagulant ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) for the determination of PCV, Hb, RBC, WBC, MCHC, MCH and MCV). Results revealed that quails of the T5% showed similar performance characteristics with their T0% counterparts. Similarly, quails of the T5% group showed superior haematological values in PCV, RBC and Hb. The major benefit of incorporating leaf meal as shown in the T5%, T10% and T15% groups was the zero mortality as compared to their T0% counterparts due to its non-deleterious effect. Therefore, incorporating leaf meals especially at the T5% will improve the profit margin of quail farmers.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127628455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CTM visually displays valuable information about the relations between independent variables in large data sets in the form of a tree diagram. The material of this study were 1954 hatching eggs from a selected a line (S line) and a randomly coupled control group (C line); the eggs were collected in three different seasons (spring, summer and autumn) and the quails were bred in two different stocking densities (160 and 240 cm 2 /bird). For CTM analysis, fertility was used as the dependent variable and genotype, season and cage stocking density were used as independent variables. The effects of all three factors on fertility were found significant with season exerting the highest effect followed by stocking density and genotype (P<0.05). While the lowest fertility ratio (63.91 %) was observed with S line bred in summer at a stocking density of 160 cm 2 /bird, the highest fertility ratio was observed with C line bred in autumn at a stocking density of 240 cm 2 /bird. A significant difference in terms of stocking density and genotype was found in summer and autumn. According to the CTM analysis results, the high temperatures in summer caused heat stress and had negative effects on fertility; this effect was even stronger on quails that had been selected for increased living weight and were kept at a stocking density of 160 cm 2 /bird.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122728413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
