A total of 160 ewes having 3-5 years of age, multiparous, non-pregnant, non-lactating and reared in arid areas of South East Algeria were included. The plasma concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, total proteins, urea and creatinin were determined as well as minerals (Ca, P) and hematological parameters (haemoglobin, haematocrit). No significant variation (P>0.05) of hematological parameters and mineral levels was detected between the plain and tableland ewes. Same observation was found for biochemical parameters but between mountain and tableland ewes. While cholesterol, triglyceride, total proteins and urea levels were higher (P<0.01) at the altitude of 150m, hemoglobin, haematocrit and creatinin, were significantly lower (P<0.05) at the same altitude. The study found lowest glucose concentrations were detected at 600m. Moreover, the results of the study showed the highest calcium concentration was found at the altitude of 150 m and the lowest at the altitude of 1000 m (1.12±0.35 mmol/L vs. 0.52±0.03 mmol/ L). Phosphorus levels were higher at altitudes of 150 m than at the altitude of 600 m and 1000 m (0.93±0.42 mmol/ L vs. 0.68±0.54 mmol /L, 0.23±0.01mmol/ L). The highest haemoglobin concentration and value of haematocrit were detected in mountain ewes at the altitude of 1000 m (120.61 g/ L, 40%) and the lowest at the altitude of 150 m (73.2 g/ L, 31%) (P<0.001). We concluded that haematological and biochemical parameters in Ouled Djellel ewes reared in arid area may be impacted by altitude.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123695470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cerebral Coenurosis is caused by larval stage of taenia multiceps known as coenurus cerebralis. The aim of this paper is to review the general aspects of cerebral coenurosis in small ruminants’ and highlight its economic and public health significance. Coenurosis occurs in worldwide and it is endemic in Ethiopia, especially in the highland area where sheep population is high. The life cycle is commonly happens between dog and small ruminants. The adult stage of this parasite inhabits the small intestine of dogs, foxes, coyotes and jackals; while larvae are found in the brain and spinal cord of intermediate hosts. When dog consume the brain containing coenurus cyst, cyst develop into taenia multiceps and then start to pass proglottid containing egg on pasture and intermediate hosts get infected when ingest eggs from pasture. Circling, Dullness, torticollis, loss of appetite, frequent bleating, separation from the flock, visual impairment, muscle tremors are the main clinical signs related with coenurusis. Diagnosis is mostly by necrosy while radiology, ultrasonography and CT can also be used. Treatment of choice is by surgical removal of the cyst or by aspiration of fluid from the cyst; also combination of Fenbendazole, praziquantel and albendazole is effective against migratory stage of the larvae. The disease causes great economic loss in small ruminant production. Human get infected with coenurosis if ingests an egg of the parasite accidentally. Regular anthelmintic treatment of dogs, correct disposal of sheep and goat brain are the main control method of coenurosis. The community should Control dog contact with pasture and have to properly dispose the brain of infected sheep and goats after slaughter; also they should keep their hygiene to prevent ingestion of T. multiceps eggs.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128661498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objectives of the present study were to investigate strain identification of FMDV infecting water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in April, 2014, Qalyubia, Egypt. Therefore partial sequences were generated after detection by real time RT-PCR and subsequent gel purification of RT-PCR amplified products of VP1 gene of FMDV- SAT2. Partial sequencing of purified virus revealed that SAT2serotype of FMD was circulating in this region. Sequences were further examined by sequence analysis and subsequent phylogeny to compare these sequences from known strains of FMDV-SAT2 circulating globally and retrieved from GenBank. Nucleotide substitution generates polymorphism at position 13 nucleotide, where a Cytosine replaced a Thymine and at the levels of 22 nucleotide where Guanine substituted Adenosine. A partial sequence of SAT2 showed the highest level of homology 99.4% similarity with sequences from Egypt 2012 with diversion 0.6 but it is variable from its neighbor countries isolates. Phylogenetic analysis showed a robust tree clustering all samples with sequences belonging to the FMDV-SAT2 variant with strong bootstrap values at relevant nodes and the evolutionary distance between groups is very short. There is a substitution in the sequences of amino acids at the position of 8, where an Alanine is changed to a Threonine. These findings demonstrate the recent picture of FMDV-SAT2 which incriminated for buffalo infectivity and responsible for its persistence in the endemic areas. Such epidemiological data could guide the application of efficient control strategies of FMDV in Egypt.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129827163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results showed that the dominant improved breeds kept comprised exotic cattle-zebu crosses (41.7%), Friesians (34.3%), Aryshires (22.4%), Jerseys 1.6% with significant differences (p<0.05) in milk yields. The mean herd size was 2.46, while a proportion of 36.4% and 15% of the animals were lactating cows and heifers respectively. The mean milk yield /cow/day was 6.47 litres with 89.3% of the farms producing less than 10 litres of milk/cow/day. Average quantity of milk produced was 1168 litres/cow/year. Mean lactation length was 7.67 months (230 days) with majority of farms (77.8%) recording a lactation period of 5-7 months (150-210 days). The mean calving interval was 14.77 months (430 days) with a range of 12-36, while mean age at first calving was 28.16 months with a range of 24-38 months. 98% of the farms used Napier grass as the main fodder. The study concluded that the low performance of dairy herds in the region may be attributed to type of breeds kept, low numbers of lactating cows and replacement heifers, , short lactation period and utilization of low quality feed resources. It is recommended that management skills, strong institutional linkages, support for commercial rearing of dairy breeding stock, and feeds diversification programme should be developed to improve performance of dairy herds in the region.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"127 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129894899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Direct smear revealed 9 out 100 camel are positive for Theileria spp in ratio of 9% while indirect fluorescent antibody technique revealed 11out of 100 camels are positive (11%), with one sample as false negative and 3 samples as false positive so we can consider the indirect fluorescent technique remain the most convenient test for theileria spp diagnosis in camels. Hematological analysis revealed significant decrease in PCV, HB, RBCs count with significant increase in MCV, MCH and MCHC in infected group than control one. The frequency of theileriosis in camels is considerable and Theileria spp do not seem to induce significant alteration in clinical signs in naturally-infected dromedary camels but laboratory seem to induce significant decrease in hematological parameters which translated to anemia.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126309332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
