A total of 80 eggs were assigned to each of the four PRESI treatments. PRESI-3h, PRESI-6h and PRESI-9h eggs were placed in an incubator at 37.5°C and 65% relative humidity for 3, 6 and 9 h, respectively, before storage with the PRESI-0h (control) eggs for 14 d at 18°C. After 14 d storage period the eggs were incubated at 37.5°C and 65% relative humidity. After 30d incubation period, the total number of eggs hatched (keets) were counted and all unhatched eggs opened to determine fertility. Hatchability data were analyzed using General linear Models of SAS and the model included fixed effects of PRESI treatments. The results indicated that PRESI treatment had an influence on the hatchability of both fertile and set eggs. PRESI-6h resulted in higher hatchability of both fertile and set eggs compared to the control group. There were however, no significant differences in hatchability of fertile eggs and hatchability of set eggs between the PRESI-9h and the control groups. These results indicate that PRESI-6h greatly reduces embryonic mortality resulting in higher hatchability compared to the other groups. It therefore appears that PRESI-6h could be used as a strategy of improving the hatchability of guinea fowl eggs stored for 14d.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125683559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 4380 pig carcasses were inspected with 274 positives given an overall prevalence of 6.25%. Carcasses from females and males represented 3.72% (163/4380) and 2.54% (111/4380) of the overall prevalence respectively. This was statistically significant (P<0.05). The yearly infection rates observed were 1.35% (59/4380), 1.87% (82/4380) and 3.04% (133/4380) for 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively. This was also statistically significant (P<0.05). Infection rates in relation to management practices were 1.51% (66/4380), 2.63% (115/4380) and 2.12% (93/4380) for intensive, semiintensive and extensive practices respectively. This was statically significant (P<0.05). Indigenous and exotic breeds recorded infection rates of 5.32% (233/4380) and 0.94% (41/4380) respectively which was statistically significant (P<0.05). Monthly distribution of porcine cysticercosis was higher in September with an infection rate of 0.84% (37/4380). This was followed by 0.82% (36/4380) in July with the lowest infection rate of 0.21% (9/4380) in April. This was statistically significant (P<0.05). The alpacas were then divided into two groups. Alpacas were fed alfalfa hay or grass hay for thirty days prior to the treatments and given water ad libitum throughout. In situ substrates tested included alfalfa hay (AHS), grass hay (GHS), corn (CS), corn/oats/barley/molasses (COBS) and oats (OS). Each forage sample was incubated in each alpaca for 4, 8, 12, 24, 36 and 72 hours and the grain substrates incubated for 2, 4, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 72 hours. Substrate treatments were administered in random order to each alpaca for the two forages fed. Forage residue was analyzed for DM and NDF, and grain residue for DM concentrations. The DM and NDF totals were divided into three categories: a = immediately soluble; b = the non-soluble but degradable; and u = non-degradable/unavailable, potential extent of degradation (PE), degradation rate (c) and effective degradation at 2 %∙hr-1 (ED2) and 4 %∙hr-1 (ED4). All DM parameters were significant for feed substrates (P<0.001). DM c was also significant for forage and the interaction (P<0.001). NDF parameters were only significant for fraction b and PE (P<0.001). Degradation in these alpacas was not different between the two forages provided and although distinct from true ruminants in digestive physiology showed similar digestion parameters for the feed tested.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134228815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Faecal samples from 350 cattle were examined microscopically using Modified Stoll’s ova counting method, 109 (31.14%) were found positive for Fasciola gigantica and mean eggs per gram of faeces (EPG) were 133.03±9.04. Association of liver fluke infection with age, sex, nutritional condition of the cattle; existence of intermediate host, vegetation with infective metacercariae and seasonal trend were also observed through questionnaire survey. Higher rate of infection was found in older animals compared to younger one. The prevalence of Fascioliasis was higher in females (41.36%) than males (13.85%). Significantly (P<0.05) higher prevalence were found in poor health animals than apparently normal healthy animals. Significantly (P<0.01) higher prevalence of Fascioliasis was recorded in winter season (51.33%) followed by rainy (24.24%) and summer season (18.10%). A total of 278 aquatic snails were collected from the study area, among them 7 (2.52%) were infected with Gymnocephalous cercariae. At necropsy, Fasciola infected liver appeared larger with tensed capsule and bile ducts were dilated, thickened with fibrous tissue masses forming the characteristic pipe-stem liver.","PeriodicalId":372944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Science Advances","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131260952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
